Stop, Look, Listen, Punish: GimR Demonstrates the Power of Audible Tech Chasing in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Punishing tech options in the Super Smash Bros. series is an integral part of high level play. If you can successfully read your opponent’s tech following a knockdown, you can oftentimes continue a combo or guarantee a kill. However, due to the four different tech options in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U–tech in place, no tech, tech towards and tech away–it can be hard to anticipate which option your opponent will pick in a tournament setting.

Going into the lab to research how to tech chase effectively, VGBootCamp’s GimR has made quite a significant discovery regarding reading tech options. For a large variety of the cast, they make an audible cue upon teching in place, usually a grunt or some type of exertion sound. Combine this with the fact that every character makes the same sound when they miss a tech–it’s a thudding sound–you have an easier time of narrowing down how to punish a tech.

When you combine this with the fact that the audio cue comes on out the first frame of a tech and that your audio reaction time is a third quicker than your visual reaction time, you will always have enough time to punish the two static tech options with a hard punish, like Fox’s up smash or Cloud’s Limit Cross Slash.

The rolling tech options both take 40 frames to complete, compared to the 26 frames of both no tech and tech in place, meaning you have almost double the time to react to those options. Once you commit those tech in place audio cues to memory, you pretty much have the answer for every single tech option for a decent portion of the viable cast. All you need to do now is make sure you play on a setup with headphones.

Here Comes the Boom! desk Salutes Season One Guile with This Sonic Boom Combo Montage

As with his recent Zangief montage, desk is waving goodbye to certain Season One variations of Street Fighter V characters with special combo montages. Moving from the Red Cyclone to the Sonic Hurricane, his latest montage deals with the world’s most American man, Guile and his various Sonic Boom combos.

With Guile’s Sonic Boom loops changing for Season Two, it’s possible that many of the lengthy sequences in this combo compilation may not exist come December 20th. Things such as the Uber Boom–which counter hits six different times–could be a thing of the past so say your goodbyes now. Those with access to the Season Two balance changes have discovered a new way to perform the Sonic Boom loop, so some of these 20+ hit combos may exist in an altered form for Season Two.

You are dismissed Colonel Guile. You can go home and be a family man now.

reslived Gets Us Up to Speed on Project M in 2016

While the development of Project M sadly ended with version 3.6 in December of last year, the PM community has kept the fires burning with tournament circuits and events throughout the year. In order to recap Project M’s tumultuous year, PM commentator and player reslived has created a comprehensive rundown of the year that was, going over major tournaments, rising players and the growth of the community.

With many events dropping Project M as a mainline game, due to problems with streaming it via Twitch and losing potential sponsorship deals with Nintendo, new events sprung up to keep PM going and Hitbox.tv became the home for any major PM stream. The Project M Championship Circuit stepped into the breach, providing an actual tournament circuit which the official Super Smash Bros. series has yet to see.

It’s Good to be Bad: UA|Bass Shows off His Best Replays in This Killer Instinct Montage

With KI World Cup approaching in March 2017 and the possibility of a Season Four after that, Killer Instinct players are looking back on 2016 and Season Three as a whole as we near 2017. With hundreds of Rough Sets with various other top KI players sitting on his YouTube channel, UA|Kalypso has edited together a “best of” replay collection of team mate, UA|Bass.

While infamous for his Spinal, this montage has replays of Bass’ Mira, Jago, Shadow Jago, Cinder and Spinal, collected from various online sets throughout 2016. Some of the combos in this video are downright sadistic, with massive resets with both Jago and Shadow Jago, Searing Skull traps with Spinal and a fair few perfects on some poor online warriors. He really lives up to the title of “Evil Bass” with some of these clips.

Melee It On Me Adds Top Canadian Sheik, David “KirbyKaze” McDonald, to the MIOM Team

Following a short retirement period starting back in December 2015, David “KirbyKaze” McDonald is back in the Super Smash Bros. Melee scene and has been picked up by Melee It On Me as their next player. As Canada’s best Sheik main and possibly their best player overall, KirbyKaze has been racking up some decent wins since his return to Melee, gaining ninth at The Big House 6, fourth at Canada Cup 2016 and fifth at Eden this past weekend.

Before his break from Melee, KirbyKaze had taken sets off of Liquid|Hungrybox, C9|Mango and EG|PPMD, marking him as one of the world’s strongest Sheiks during the period of 2010 to 2012. Hopefully, with the support of Melee It On Me, KirbyKaze will reach those lofty heights yet again. KirbyKaze’s first tournament with MIOM will be at Genesis 4 next January in San Jose, California.

For those who don’t know, rather than being your typical team, Melee It On Me is a sort of “player incubator,” advising and representing Melee players until they can sort them a high level sponsor. Previous MIOM alumni are DNL|Duck, Tempo|S2J, CLG|SFAT and C9|Mango, so the team has quite the impressive track record for securing their players decent contracts.

Selfless Gaming Adds Another Super Smash Bros. Melee Player to Their Roster, with the Signing of Hugo “HugS” Gonzalez

Joining fellow Californian Joey “Lucky” Aldama, Selfless Gaming has added another Super Smash Bros. Melee player to their roster, with the signing of Hugo “HugS” Gonzales. A veteran in the Melee scene with his competitive career stretching all the way back to 2004, HugS is arguably the progenitor for the current generation of Samus mains.

Currently ranked 20th on the 2015 Melee It On Me World Rankings, HugS’ main achievement of 2016 has been growing his stream, becoming one of the biggest Melee streamers out there, with his mix of serious play and humorous chat. Hopefully, his addition to the Selfless Pride should allow him to grow his stream even more and help aid his growth as a player.

His signing also comes after his departure from Dream Team at the start of this month, with Selfless swooping in out of the blue to snatch HugS up. HugS will be competing at Don’t Park on the Grass in Seattle, Washington this weekend, so look for him rocking a brand new Selfess jersey on stream during the tournament.

Some of the UK’s Best Street Fighter V Players Show off Akuma in This Special WSO Showcase

In a special festive livestream straight from Capcom’s UK headquarters, this week’s WSO Session saw some of the UK’s finest Street Fighter V players gathering to compete in a special random select tournament, as well as to show off Akuma ahead of his launch next week.

The random select tournament saw players like Imstilldadaddy, UM|Hurricane, PxP|Problem X, Perilous|Packz and others picking numbers from a hat to decide their character. These numbers were tied to specific kidrobot Street Fighter figures, which the players then had to use in a special eight-player bracket. It’s definitely a fun idea, and I’d personally like to see more of these light-hearted side tournaments at more events–if there is the time to run them.

However, the main event was the Akuma showcase, where Capcom community manager Matt Edwards and Jammerz ran through everything you could possibly want to know about Akuma before he is unleashed on the world on December 20th. Along with going through all of his kit, the rest of the stream was dedicated to Akuma mirrors between players like Hurricane and Problem X, so give the whole thing a watch if you want that headstart next Tuesday. The Akuma showcase starts at 1:58:50 on the video, so skip to there if you are just here for the gameplay.
