Option Select Early Percent Stage Spikes in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, With This Primer from the Beefy Smash Doods

At low percents in Smash 4, characters with bad recoveries like Cloud or Roy can easily be stage spiked, netting an early kill. In these scramble situations off stage, it can be difficult to determine whether you actually need to hammer the shield button in order to tech the stage, or whether it is safe to recover back to the ledge. Well, worry no longer as the Beefy Smash Doods have you covered with this new option select which covers this stage spike situation.

By hitting Up B and Shield at the same time, this OS will default to a wall tech at high enough percents, and an Up B back to ledge at lower percent. This is due to Smash 4’s buffer system, where specials have a higher priority than shields in the buffer queue. If your character can perform an Up B, they will perform the move first. Since at higher percents, the game is unable to get your Up B out in time, the game defaults to the next action which is a shield, thus resulting in a wall tech.

This OS works with any special, so try it out with other recovery methods like Wario’s Bike or Bowser Jr’s Koopa Kart if you are put in a situation where you have to tech the underside of the stage. Do note that you have to wait until your character comes out of hitlag for this OS to work; if you do it too early, neither move will come out.

Punchwalk Through the Opposition with the Help of This Goro Guide for Mortal Kombat X

The bulky bruiser Goro has had a bit of a raw deal during the life span of Mortal Kombat X. While he featured heavily in the promotional material and marketing campaign for the latest edition of the Mortal Kombat series, this veteran Shokan has not had the largest presence in competitive play. However, with the latest balance patch and some great buffs to Goro, one of Shao Kahn’s best champions now has a chance to do damage in the tournament.

As such, notable Australian MKX player and Goro user Cabjoy has put together a lengthy guide about the master of the punchwalk, going over his strengths, weaknesses and potential after this new patch. He runs through all of Goro’s changes, his normals and specials before demoing some of the bread and butter combos which potential Goro mains should learn if they want to master this four armed fighter. Cabjoy is dedicated to using Goro for the foreseeable future, so expect more guides and knowledge on this kombatant as he continues to play him.

Milan Games Week Is Hosting the Capcom Pro Tour European Regional Finals from October 15th-16th

With regional circuits starting to reach their natural end as Capcom Cup 2016 approaches, Milan Games Week is acting as the Regional Finals event for Europe’s leg of the Capcom Pro Tour. Happening next weekend in the Fieramilianocity exhibition hall in downtown Milan, the first day of competition will be the 256-player last chance qualifier, with the top two Street Fighter V players from that qualifier joining the other 14 players who have qualified across different European Ranking events, to make up that final 16-player bracket.

As you are well aware by now, the winner of this Regional Final will be winning a trip to Capcom Cup in December, to compete against 31 other players in a weekend of the highest level of Street Fighter. The actual event itself is hosted by FACEIT, who previously hosted last year’s CPT event during Milan Games Week. Veteran UK commentators F-Word and Logan Sama will be providing their dulcet tones over the course of the weekend and you can still sign up to compete in the last chance qualifier by going to the CPT Milan Games Week Challonge page. As always, all of the action will be streamed live on the Capcom Fighters Twitch channel so make sure to tune in to see who will make it through as Europe’s representative for Capcom Cup 2016.

2GGaming Rounds Up Some Technical True Combos in this Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Combo Contest

Alongside their regular Twitter tech round up videos, 2GGaming recently asked for video submissions for a special combo contest they were holding for Smash 4 players. To qualify for this contest, players had to upload clips with at least three unique aerials and a large section of the the combo had to be true. No measly strings in this contest, 2GG were looking for some flashy inescapable combos.

The list features Bowser Jr. item play, platform extensions with Duck Hunt, Greninja footstool combos but the winner was a lengthy Peach combo collection which feature turnip extensions, instant float cancels and general mastery of Peach’s aerial movement. Some of the tech that Smash 4 players are starting to experiment with is really impressive and I can’t wait to see more of these high execution combos as the meta continues to grow.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe Announce EU Qualifiers for the Japanese Finals of the King of the Iron Fist Tournament

Not to be at all confusing, Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe have released details on a series of European qualifiers for the King of the Iron Fist Finals, to be held in Japan on December 10th. Unlike the US, which is getting its own finals, Europeans will have to fight against the gauntlet of Asian players in the Japanese finals of this promotional Tekken 7 tournament, rather than going up against solely players from their own continent.

These three qualifiers will be at Warsaw Games Week on October 16th, Paris Games Week on October 28th, and then in London at an event which has yet to be confirmed by Bandai Namco. The winners of these qualifiers must be residents of Europe, and will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan to compete in the finals, with a chance at the 3 million yen grand prize.

You can find all the information on these qualifiers over on the official Tekken 7 website.

TSM|Leffen to Attend The Big House 6

With the recent announcement of his approved visa, many Melee fans have been speculating as to whether TSM|Leffen would make his grand return at The Big House 6 this weekend. Well, the good news is that yes, the villain of Super Smash Bros. Melee will be attending The Big House 6 in Michigan–but there is a catch.

Even though he is attending, he is not aiming to take the trophy home this weekend, as stated in a quick vlog he recorded in the airport on his way to the USA. He stated that he is unlikely to enter the singles event and even if he does, he probably won’t be playing his Fox, but messing around with secondaries like Marth, Sheik or Mewtwo. Since he has been out of the game for a while and hasn’t been diligently practicing during his visa issues, it would be insane to expect him to take the whole tournament, so his attendance is to get used to traveling and attending overseas tournaments again.

Leffen did say he would try to commentate or play in the Crews bracket if he is able, but don’t get your hopes up about The Big House 6 being the lauded return of Leffen. If you want to learn more about his struggles during this whole visa debacle, you can watch his dedicated Red Bull TV series here, which recently saw the release of its final episode.

NorCal Will Fight Against SoCal in ESL’s King of the Hill for Street Fighter V

After successful King of the Hill events for Overwatch and Hearthstone, the ESL are bringing their King of the Hill tournament format to Street Fighter V this October. This month-long tournament series will see players from Northern and Southern California facing off in weekly first-to-10 brackets, live from the ESL Studios in Burbank. This series begins on October 18th, with two invited representatives from each region coming together to determine who will be the first King of the Hill.

Whoever takes or defends the hill will earn $500, as well as a spot in the following week’s tournament. It will then be up to another player from either region to come and retake the hill from the enemy team. All of this action will be commentated by stalwart commentary duo, Ultradavid and James Chen, with all the action being streamed live on the official ESL Twitch channel.

Following the initial clash on October 18th, the next three battles will be on Tuesdays at 3pm PST, so make sure to tune in to see which region is truly dominant in Street Fighter V. With the recent success of ESL Brooklyn Beatdown, I’m sure this event will be up to the same high standard and usher in yet more top quality Street Fighter V events, hosted by ESL.

MDZ jimmY Breaks Down a New Parry OS for Ryu, Shown Off by Tokido at ESL’s Brooklyn Beatdown

During Losers Finals of the ESL’s Brooklyn Beatdown event, Tokido was trying to implement a new parry option select while fighting Momochi’s Ken. While he did mess up this new OS a few times against Momochi, Ryu players soon cottoned onto what Tokido was attempting and went into the lab to test out what was going on. One such player is MDZ jimmY, who has put together a thorough video breakdown, going over the properties of this new option select for Ryu.

The actions that tipped jimmY off were that after a knockdown, Tokido would go for crouching light kick followed by a parry. Both times Tokido does this in his set with Momochi, it doesn’t work, but with some lab work and investigation, jimmY has come up with an idea as to what Tokido was trying to do. In turns out that after the delayed crouching light kick, Tokido was inputting a parry and a jab input, to blow up either a jump tech OS or wakeup buttons from Momochi’s Ken. If Momochi jumped, he would get hit by the jab and if he was hitting buttons, he’d get parried. What’s even more interesting is that if the opponent wakes up with a sequence which includes a three frame gap in between the hits, Ryu’s parry will come out and you can punish.

jimmY then goes onto show off what other options this parry OS covers, as well as what can the opponent can do to counter this, both when blocking and attacking. Expect many Ryus to be utilizing this OS in upcoming tournaments and props to jimmY for such an informative exploration of this option select.

James “Swedish Delight” Liu and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby Join Renegades as Their First Super Smash Bros. Players

In a historic double-signing by North American esports team Renegades, Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby and James “Swedish Delight” Liu have joined the team as their first Super Smash Bros. players. The esports team, owned by Boston Celtics player Jonas Jerebko, has picked the perfect time to sign these two big names: just ahead of The Big House 6 in Dearborn, Michigan this weekend.

Dabuz is currently ranked third on the Panda Global Rankings for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, gaining second place at Genesis 3 and Super Smash Con, first at WTFox 2 and Apex 2016 as well as third at CEO 2016. Widely regarded as the world’s best Rosalina & Luma player and one of the most consistent Smash 4 pros playing at the moment, Renegades have certainly picked a winner with signing Dabuz. Talking to ESPN Esports about his new team, Dabuz stated that “I have a lot of faith that Renegades will help me grow as a competitor and personality as I keep pursuing my dream to pursue being the best player I can be.”

Known for his top level Sheik and a surprisingly good Luigi, Swedish Delight is surging up the ranks of Super Smash Bros. Melee, racking up some great placings throughout this year, like a second place finish at Smash ‘n Splash 2, fifth at Pound 2016 and ninth at both Evo and CEO 2016. While currently ranked 31st on the MIOM Annual Rankings, Swedish Delight looks to surge up the table for this year’s ranking and his performance at The Big House 6 should only bolster his immense growth as a player.
