Embrace death! New Samurai Shodown trailer and gameplay footage from PAX East 2019

SNK’s return to sword-slashing combat looks very promising — and bloody as hell.

As promised, SNK delivered a much closer look at their upcoming return to the classic franchise Samurai Shodown at PAX East 2019, beginning with a fantastic new trailer:

And the window has narrowed for the game’s release: now we can expect the title to be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2019, offering just over a month (at least) before we see the game on the Evo 2019 main stage. It will arrive on Switch and PC sometime later.

As gorgeous as the game is looking in the trailer, the gameplay is where it counts — and multiple sources are starting to provide video of exactly that. Here is 12 minutes of gameplay from IGN:

We can see that the game’s spirit seems to be intact: careful neutral game is required because of huge punishes on mistakes and whiffs. Here’s some more from LI Joe:

Or, how about a whopping 44 minutes of gameplay from Gematsu…?

The game is set very early in the franchise timeline, will have 16 fighters in the roster at launch (including three newcomers) and will feature an A.I. training system. From the press release:

Once again set in the late 18th century, after the events of Samurai Shodown V and prior to the events of the original game, Samurai Shodown will see the return of thirteen classic characters, including Haohmaru, Earthquake and Galford, who will be joined by three brand new characters to the series. Additional characters will also be available via post-launch DLC.

Developed in-house at SNK by the same team that brought us King of Fighters XIV, Samurai Shodown features a host of modes, such as Story, Practice, Online Battle and multiple offline battle modes. The new game will also debut an innovative new asynchronous online mode called “Dojo” that uses deep machine learning to create a CPU-avatar that learns from players’ actions during offline modes and creates a Ghost AI character. Players will be able to upload their Ghost to the leaderboards and also download Ghost data from other players. Players can take on Ghosts in 1v1 battle, or take on the Ironman Challenge and attempt to take down up to 100 ghosts in one go.

The game will be published in North America and Europe by the Los Angeles-based Athlon Games. We’re definitely looking forward to “embracing death” this summer!

Check out Daniel Lindholm’s early drafts for Cody’s theme in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Some different takes that still suit the mood of the Mayor of Metro City.

Daniel Lindholm has contributed some of the most enjoyable new music in the Street Fighter series with his compositions for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, including Zeku’s theme, Menat’s theme, and more. Cody’s new theme is also part of Lindholm’s work, and if you want some insight into how it developed, check out these earlier drafts:

The use of Cody’s theme from Super Street Fighter IV as a basis to build on was clearly in the plan from the start, but it’s certainly interesting to hear how different these tunes are from the end result — and yet, pieces of the (slightly more upbeat) final theme music are still in there.

Kid Goku from Dragon Ball GT is coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ as part of the FighterZ Pass 2

Here comes a new… Goku!

The Dragon Ball FighterZ roster is not lacking for versions of series protagonist Goku, and Bandai Namco has now confirmed that the next fighter to join the cast as part of FighterZ Pass 2 will be yet another one: this time will be a bit more of a departure however, because this Goku is in fact Kid Goku, as he appears in the Dragon Ball GT series.

From the press release:

After an errant wish by Emperor Pilaf, Goku has been transformed into a child during the Dragon Ball GT series. This younger Goku packs a big punch with special attacks like the Super Kamehameha attack, transforming him into Super Saiyan 3. Goku is also able to use his Super Spirit Bomb, Power Pole, and Reverse Kamehameha to flatten the competition.

Could the “secret move” be a transformation into Super Saiyan 4…? We’ll have to wait and see.

Kid Goku joins the FighterZ Pass 2 character DLC package alongside the already-available Jiren and Videl, upcoming additions Broly (Dragon Ball Super) and Gogeta (SSGSS), and one more yet-to-be-announced fighter. Kid Goku’s release date is yet-unrevealed, but the FighterZ Pass 2 is available now for $24.99 USD. Dragon Ball FighterZ is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.

A favorite fighting locale returns to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition — the iconic Field of Fate

This battlefield is coming back, by popular demand!

One of the most-loved stages in Street Fighter history is soon to appear in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition!

This stage is based on the opening sequence of 1994’s Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie; the anime film presents a version of the climatic fight that ended the storyline of the original Street Fighter game, where Ryu defeats Sagat and leaves him scarred via the Shoryuken.

The scene got its first in-game nod in the special “Thunder Plains” boss stage that appears in Street Fighter Alpha 2, both in the arcade mode and (briefly) in the game’s opening sequence.

Now returning as the “Field of Fate”, Capcom clearly is paying homage to the SFA2 opening with their trailer for this new locale, right down to the background music. The stage’s iconic simplicity and place in the Street Fighter lore have made it one of the most-requested additions to Street Fighter V.

The Field of Fate is coming to Street Fighter V as DLC next week, on March 26th, and will cost $1.99 USD or 40,000 Fight Money to add to your own stage select screen. Meanwhile, check out the fight from the movie that started it all in the video below!
