Denial eSports Picks Up Zero Suit Samus Prodigy Tyler “Marss” Martins

After picking up Duck late last week for Melee, Denial eSports is making quite the impression in the world of Smash by signing Tyler “Marss” Martins as their first Super Smash Bros. for Wii U player. The 17-year-old from New England has made a hell of an impression over the past year or so, establishing himself of one of the world’s best Zero Suit Samus players: gaining fifth at Apex 2016, ninth at Evo 2016, second at 2GGT: KTAR Saga and most recently, fourth at GUMS 9.

He is currently ranked number one on the New England Smash 4 Power Ranking and holds 19th on the Panda Global Smash 4 Ranking, so Denial have certainly picked one of the brightest new players in Smash 4 as their first signing. He and Duck will be representing Denial at Shine 2016 next weekend, hoping to bring back two trophies for the Wolfpack. Infamous for turning up to tournaments in pyjama bottoms, I wonder if Marss will be sporting special Denial-brand bottoms for his team debut at Shine.

New Tekken 7: Fated Retribution Story Details Reveal Playable Child Kazuya

Gamescom 2016’s fighting game news continues with fresh Story Mode details for Tekken 7: Fated Retribution. Among the more intriguing tidbits are screenshots featuring a young Kazuya Mishima training with his father, Heihachi. Tekken 7’s Story Mode will offer several hours of gameplay and includes featurettes that look back in time–with this child Kazuya being a playable character.

Other than the Mishima storyline, there are several unlockable side stories that involve other characters from the series. There will also be some story-specific costumes for those fighters. One available side story focuses on Claudio Serafino, a supernatural investigator from the Archers of Sirius group, who potentially has the means to defeat the Devil Gene.

Check out the hi-res screenshot gallery from Gamescom below.

Rage Quitters Beware: Street Fighter V Now Bans Quitters for 24 Hours with a 1000 LP Penalty

As mentioned in Capcom’s most recent announcement, Street Fighter V was expected to implement a new system to deal with rage quitters as part of yesterday’s server maintenance. According to reports from the both r/StreetFighter and r/Kappa subreddits, the new anti-rage quit system is indeed now active: specifically, anyone who leaves a match 3 times within 2 hours will get hit with a 24-hour ban as well as a deduction of 1,000 League Points.

This is a welcome addition to a game that’s been sorely needing this since launch. That said, this doesn’t seem to have been implemented without any hitches; there have been some players who claimed to have been banned after being rage quit upon, not rage quitting themselves. Capcom’s Neidel “haunts” Crisan has addressed this on reddit, stating that players who remain connected to the matchmaking server after a disconnect shouldn’t be marked as having rage quit. However, he further clarified that he is on the look out for any footage that shows otherwise, and that he’ll forward any that is found to their team.

We Don’t Tech Those: Take Stocks with These Zero Suit Samus Setups for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

A few weeks ago we covered the Beefy Smash Doods video that explained those odd occasions where it felt like you’d nailed the tech, but the game disagreed. It was only a matter of time until the community started to get to grips with the idea, and we’re now starting to see exactly what some characters can do with this ability.

Zero Suit Samus, for example, can make use of her paralyzer to devastating effect: locking opponents that don’t tech and chasing down opponents who do. Better yet, she can set up into it with nothing more complex than the first hit of her forward-air. Check the video below for more information, and then start thinking about exactly how you can get this going in your own game.

Check Out These “Deep Meaty” Combos for Chun-Li & Guile in Street Fighter V

Good timing on meaty attacks is an important part of keeping the pressure on your downed opponent in Street Fighter V–correct timing keeps your offence on, and even better can stuff attempted wake-up attacks and open up potent combo opportunities. In the video below, LnGrinta shows some examples of “deep meaties”–using moves that have a lot of active frames to cover as much time as possible and start some nasty combos if unblocked.

Check out even more meaty combos from Street Fighter V in this video from desk.

Super Smash Bros. 64 Greats Isai and Alvin Clash in a Marathon 12-Character Battle

If you are looking for more Super Smash Bros. 64 action after watching Super Smash Con, we’ve got just the thing for you. During the 64 Salty Suite, one of Peru’s best Smashers Alvin challenged US legend Isai to a 12-character battle, where players fight with every character in the 64 roster. It’s much like a typical Ironman challenge but rather than starting from different ends of the character select screen and working inwards, both players start on the same character.

What results is an intense, hour long battle between Alvin and Isai with plenty of momentum shifts and ridiculous 64 combos that you’d expect when two top players clash. I won’t spoil the ending but once one player gets the upper hand, it turns into a complete steamroll. Alvin and other Peruvian Smashers rarely get the chance to play in the US, so it’s fantastic to have such a long set on film between the two greats. Do note that the commentary is in Spanish, as Mexico’s 64 champion Mariguas is on comms with Chilean smasher Shalaka. You might need to bone up on your Spanish if you want to understand the elucidating commentary.

Killer Instinct Shows Off “Shadow Lords” Story Mode at Gamescom 2016

Killer Instinct showed off its upcoming mode at Gamescom 2016 in Cologne, Germany. According to the official website, “Shadow Lords is part ladder, part arcade mode, part story mode, and part roguelike, all rolled up into one unique experience.” Shadow Lords was first announced back in March of this year after leaking prior to an official announcement. The additional mode will be released by the end of Killer Instinct’s third season of content.

Microsoft is releasing Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition on September 20, 2016 for Xbox One and Windows 10. The title will include all 26 characters from the game’s three seasons along with other bonus content such as an exclusive “Gold Gargos” character skin.

The folks over at IGN have gotten their hands on the most recent build of the new mode and have uploaded a video showing off how the system works. Folks interested in how the story is handled can skip ahead to about 6:50 to view the mode’s cutscenes.

Tekken 7: Fated Retribution’s selection of fighters continues to grow: at Gamescom, Bandai Namco has announced the inclusion Lee Chaolan–and his alter-ego Violet–to the roster.

The adopted son of Heihachi Mishima, Lee is a disciple of Paul Pheonix and Marshall Law, fighting in a style that is inspired by his two very different teachers.

Lee makes an exciting addition to the cast, as he made his debut in the very first installment of the series and has appeared in all but Tekken 3. Picking his 2P color lets you play as ultra-stylish Violet.

New Harley, Same Crazy: Injustice 2 Announces Deadshot and Harley Quinn

It may come as no surprise that–in the wake of the Suicide Squad film–Injustice 2 is going to “stay crazy” with the addition of everyone’s favorite psycho Harley Quinn. Excitingly, it looks like she’ll be getting a major revamp, bringing a whole new set of moves and a couple of furry friends to the fight.

Harley’s not joining the roster alone though–she’s bringing a Suicide Squad buddy along with her. Deadshot is joining the battle and, with the ability to get up close and personal in addition to his signature bullet bouncing, he looks like a total blast to play. Netherrealm are definitely going for a Suicide Squad feel in this trailer, which means that we even get a glimpse out how the duo will be interacting in the game.

Injustice 2 is expected to launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next year.

Bandai Namco Games Teases Potential Soul Calibur News via Twitter

Long considered one of the big four 3D fighting game franchises, Soul Calibur hasn’t really had much of a presence as of late. Its most recent release, Lost Swords, was a single player free-to-play game. Meanwhile, its last competitive outing, Soul Calibur V, came out over almost four years ago back in 2012.

However, with this year being Soul Calibur’s 20th anniversary, it seems that Bandai Namco Games may have something up its sleeves for the series. The company recently released a teaser image on the official Soul Calibur twitter, showing the familiar silhouette of what seems to be fan-favorite character Ivy, along with the words “Guess Who.”

The timing of this tweet is quite interesting, as Gamescom is taking place this week and Bandai Namco Games will be in attendance. Additionally, reports have stated that the company is set to show a “new IP” alongside Tekken 7: Fated Retribution and DragonBall Xenoverse 2 at the event. Could Soul Calibur 6 be announced at the event? Stay locked on to Shoryuken.com for more as this story develops.
