Hear the Stories from Local Smash Scenes Around the World in this New Smash Documentary Series

Smashers have a thing for making high-quality documentaries. There’s the big daddy of Super Smash Bros. docs with The Smash Brothers, the soon to be released Metagame, a planned Brawl documentary, and now you have a documentary for the little guys of the Smash community: Smash Scenes. It’s a new documentary series where film-makers Toggle and GosuJasu travel to various regions around the world to learn more about their particular area and its Smash history.

In the trailer, there are interviews with players from South Korea, Hawaii, and Santa Barbara–talking about their various experiences playing Smash and interacting with their local community. Usually, most documentaries about Smash focuses on the top level of play, so this series acts a refreshing change of pace, focusing on the average player and their individual experiences on why they play Smash. The first episode is set to release a week from today, so keep your eyes on the GosuJasu YouTube channel to see the finished product.

LI Joe Talks about Why He Hasn’t Gone Pro, Playing on ESPN, Urien, and More

With his impressive performance at Evo 2016–being the only American player to make it into top 8–Joe “LI Joe” Ciaramelli has become something of a folk hero in the fighting game community. Despite this however, he has yet to take advantage of any opportunities his Evo performance might have opened towards going pro.

BornFree recently caught up with LI Joe at Defend the North where they got to talk about a number of topics; on not going pro, Joe states that he isn’t really ready to quit his current job and play fighting games as a full time career. The fighting game community “isn’t there yet,” at least in terms of playing at a pro level being a viable career option. However, he doesn’t discount the possibility of doing so further down the line.

In addition to this, he also talks about playing at live on ESPN at Evo and also shares his thoughts on the final DLC character for Street Fighter V: Urien, who was his main back in Street Fighter III 3rd Strike.

James “Duck” Ma Becomes First Super Smash Bros. Melee Player for Denial eSports

After a very short time with Melee It On Me, Samus player James “Duck” Ma has been picked up by Denial eSports as their first Super Smash Bros. Melee player. This is Denial’s first foray into Smash, as they are primarily known for fielding teams for shooters like Halo, Call of Duty and Rainbow Six: Siege, as well as for MOBAs like Smite and Heroes of the Storm. With that shooter pedigree, it makes sense they pick a player who known to be a crack shot with Samus’ Charge Shot.

Duck is currently ranked 17th in the world on the MIOM Global Rankings, but his placings have been getting better and better the last few tournaments, placing just shy of top 8 at this year’s Evo and getting 7th at WTFox 2 before that. With Shine being his next tournament, Duck now has the might of the Denial Wolf Pack on his side–which should lead him to bigger and better things in the near future. This duck is running with the wolves now.

Finish Survival Mode in No Time with This Guide for Ibuki in Street Fighter V

VesperArcade continues  his series of video guides to completing Street Fighter V’s Survival Mode on Hard difficulty–this time focusing on the speedy kunoichi Ibuki, considered by VesperArcade to be a tougher run through the mode, due to her low (900 HP) health. Check out his tips for surviving those grueling 50 fights in the video below.

Of course, with haunts promising easy ways to get those costume colors with tomorrow’s update, the motivation to endure Survival Mode is lessened–but there’s still Fight Money and PSN trophies to be earned by taking it on.

Pokkén Tournament Player Tevin “Teejay” Stokes Signed by Noble Esports

Noble Esports has grabbed itself a wild Pokkén player! It was just announced that Sceptile main Tevin”Teejay” Stokes has been added to their expanding FGC roster.

Given his representation on Team USA, and his strong performances at Evo, CEO, Momocon, and more, the acquisition was probably inevitable. The signing occurs just in time for Teejay to advertise Noble at Pokkén Tournament’s World Championship in September.

He is the first Pokkén player to join this esports team, which includes players specializing in Killer Instinct, Super Smash Bros., and Mortal Kombat.

Beware Urien’s “Secret Shimmy” in Street Fighter V

The man isn’t technically out, yet people are discovering new tech for the master of the Aegis Reflector. Not only does Urien have a plethora of oki setups off of his heavy punch headbutt, but his standing heavy kick shrinks his grab box by 50%, making it easy to bait a wake-up throw and then punish with a big combo.

This tech works on all wake-up grabs and most command grabs, as shown in the video. The creator of the video Hatson calls this the “Secret Shimmy” and–as long as it doesn’t get changed before Urien’s official release–it looks like a great way to bait opponents into an unsafe wake-up option.

After demonstrating the Secret Shimmy, Hatson goes on to show several oki setups off of heavy headbutt. He also shows how Urien’s can beat wake-up jabs, delayed wake-up jabs, and back rolls. This is quite the extensive PSA for an unreleased character, showing just how powerful Urien may be when he graces Street Fighter V in the not too distant future.

Warm Up Your Alex Options Against Chun-Li’s Instant Air Legs in Street Fighter V

When it comes to Street Fighter V, everyone knows exactly what is coming when your opponent picks Chun-Li. Instant Air Legs is one of her most powerful tools, and one of the most important parts of beating her is coming to terms with how to combat this powerful option.

Alex isn’t a character with the privilege of having an invincible anti-air like a shoryuken, so he has to work it out without that easy option. Luckily, FinchoMatic has figured out some ways Alex can deal with Instant Air Legs, which are detailed below.
