Kumite in Tennessee 2017 Announced for January 6th-8th, with Pokkén Tournament as Its First Game

Announced via Twitter earlier this morning, Kumite in Tennessee (often abbreviated to KIT) is set to rumble on January 6 to January 8, 2017. It would appear that the KIT social media team is planning on rolling out the red carpet slowly for its games: currently, only Pokkén Tournament has been announced. Given KIT’s importance and involvement with the southern and eastern scenes, more announcements can be expected to follow.

KIT, along with PandaXGaming, is also involved in the Mid-South Championship happening on September 10th. It’s likely we’ll see a flurry of more information for KIT 2017 once this event wraps up.

Capcom Announces Ragequit Penalization, Double Fight Money Weekends, Daily Challenges and Much More in Upcoming Street Fighter V Updates

Capcom Community Manager Neidel “haunts” Crisan took to Capcom-Unity today to release his third Street Fighter V development update–and it features many things that have been referenced and requested within the community itself.

Firstly: Street Fighter V online features will be down Tuesday, August 16th from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM PDT, with an update following this scheduled server maintenance. This update is targeted at continuing Capcom’s battle against ragequitters; while habitual ragequitters have seen their League Points reset previously, there was little to no direct actions against occasional ragequitters. This update seeks to do just that. As referenced in the post, haunts states that ragequitters “will lose League Points and be locked out of online matching for a set time.” This makes the penalty for pulling the plug more severe, and ideally will make players think twice about doing so.

Crisan further releases details of the upcoming September update, which promises to be a big one. The biggest blurb in the article is reserved for Double Fight Money weekends–which, as implied, will allow for players to earn double the normal amount of Fight Money in Ranked Match over the course of a weekend. This has been a feature much requested by the community, who has felt the ability to pay for characters and stages using the in-game currency is too difficult. He also announces that the first of such weekends will be from September 2nd to September 4th, so mark your calendars for that weekend in particular.

While not going into full details on the rest, haunts also confirmed other very significant features coming to the update, including the long-promised daily challenges for Fight Money, playing against the CPU in Versus mode, “Fighter Profile Updates,” and being able to purchase costume colors via Fight Money as opposed to unlocking them through Survival–with some colors for Premium costumes apparently being provided for free to Season Pass holders.

Stop V-Reversals with This Parry Option Select for Ryu in Street Fighter V

Aside from being a great footsie tool, parries in Street Fighter have often been the source of some decent option selects. Street Fighter V is no exception, with this new option select that has been discovered for Ryu.

As Andrew David Murphy demonstrates in the video below, Ryu can option select with his parry to beat out certain V-Reversals. The technique is similar to the anti-backdash option select players used in Street Fighter IV. By inputting the parry command after a string of jabs, Ryu can catch most V-Reversals with a parry. Additionally, with some adjustment, Ryu can also chase down other characters whose V-Reversals move them out of his way.

Now, jabs aren’t the only way into this option select. As MDZ jimmY demonstrates in their own video, Ryu can also set the option select up using his standing medium punch (as previously covered in our last Street Fighter V roundup).

Additionally, MDZ jimmY also shows how other parry-like V-Skills–such as Zangief’s–can also work with the option select. This likely means that Alex, who has a parry when his V-Trigger is active, can probably pull this off as well.

Only time will tell if these option selects become dominant tools for these characters. Capcom could always nerf these options. In the meantime, share your thoughts on them in the comments below.

Axl Low: Land a Hit and Make It Count with Optimized Punishes for Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-

Axl Low has extremely long range, and somewhat low damage on ground combos. His normals can be used for keepaway or zoning, but it usually winds up being high risk/low reward. When you do connect, you need to make it count. The following is a collection of videos from Japanese player Shimonkin, showcasing how to get the opponent airborne (crucial for higher damage combos).

Backdashing out of range of Faust’s 6H overhead (forward Heavy Slash):

Again with Faust’s 6H, this time if Axl manages to preemptively avoid it with a jump, or superjump respectively in these next two clips:

While it’s not that practical to jump out of the way of this move during pressure, this concept could be used for punishing a lot of whiffed moves while you’re airborne. Great meterless damage, especially compared to a ground combo.

Another Faust punish, this time 5s (far Slash). One of Faust’s main pokes–insane range, cancelable, all that good stuff. Avoid it altogether with a brave read, an instant air dash, and half his life bar:

Same concept but against Sol’s 6H instead:

And again, but Sin 6P (forward Punch). This astoundingly invincible anti-air option from Sin is hellish to deal with, so whiff punish when you get the opportunity:

Punishing Venom’s 2S into QV (crouch Slash xx charged ball set). Venom’s 2S is a very frequently used normal, it’s got great range and can be cancelled into ball set. Venom players will abuse cancels such as these if you don’t punish them. Using Axl’s Shark Strike super lets him get good damage off of a normally dead-end poke:

Potemkin has an obnoxious match-up against Axl, and here’s another option to keep Pot out–rising jump kick. It’s Axl’s best air-to-air counterpoke, and here we see the large untechable window on counter-hit when he catches him using Megafist. On whiff, you’ll recover in time for an airdash or jump to reposition; on a proper read you’ll get a big combo:

Axl’s 3P (down-forward Punch) is a great normal and on counter-hit you get a launch. Here’s how to convert when you tag Elphelt in her max range for 5s (far Slash):

…and Elphelt’s 2HS (crouch Heavy Slash):

More 3P counter-hit combos, this time on Millia:

And once more, against Ramlethal:

Punishing Ramlethal’s 2S > 2H string:

A clever side-switch using counter-hit 2S:

It’s unclear whether it’s intentional, but it seems that Jam’s charged up Ryuujin kick is completely invincible to strikes while in the air. She can, however, be airthrown:

Dizzy’s mirror super appears to be vulnerable to throws:

…or if you’re not feeling that brave, block and punish:

Here we see a tricky Jam string: 2H, parry, YRC, throw. The throw is option selected with 5S to cover airborne escape attempts. Shown here are how most of Axl’s options fare against this, with his DP being the most effective:

Bonus! An insane combo on Potemkin using this same relaunch combo concept, using 50% meter:

Beware of These Devious Situations as the Beefy Smash Doods Run Down Their Top Five Ledge Traps in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Being on the ledge in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U can be a dangerous thing. While you may be invincible for a short time when grabbing onto it, lingering on it for too long allows your opponent to set up a vicious trap which can end up with you losing your stock. As sticking on the ledge can be hazardous to your health, the Beefy Smash Doods have made a handy list of their top five ledge traps in Smash 4 to act as both guide and warning to anyone who is prone to clinging on the ledge for too long.

First off, let’s define exactly what a ledge trap is: a ledge trap is a situation where a player can punish the opponent returning to stage by either guaranteeing a combo or outright killing someone that chooses the wrong get-up option. This is different to an edgeguard, which is where a player stops the opponent from grabbing the ledge all together. As the first example in the video, cFive of the Beefy Smash Doods shows how King Dedede’s Gordos can force the opponent to get hit and possibly stage spiked by a Gordo if they stay on the ledge, while rolling onto the ledge makes them an easy target for a down-smash. While there are ways to avoid the trap all together by simply dropping down and regrabbing the ledge, doing so removes your ledge invincibility and sets you up to get dunked into the abyss by Dedede’s down-air.

The video lists another four of these devious traps, showing how a player can force an opponent to the ledge in order to set up the trap, as well as ways to either mitigate damage or avoid the trap completely. With ledge and edge play being so crucial in Smash 4, this video is a must watch for players who often end up hanging on for dear life.

Gain Deeper Insight into the Motivations of Street Fighter V’s Core Cast with These CFN Portal Profiles

After the Capcom Fighters Network Portal site covered the 12 Shadaloo Dolls back in June, Capcom has uploaded their 100th Character Profile to the CFN Portal. To celebrate this milestone, they’ve begun to take a look at some of the characters that make up the core playable portion of the Street Fighter V roster. Starting of course with the quintessential World Warrior himself, Ryu–and his Satsui no Hado-infused counterpart, Evil Ryu. Evil Ryu’s techniques are noted to be similar to those of Necalli’s, perhaps suggesting a correlation between the Satsui no Hado and the monster summoned in “The Hour of Battle?”

In addition to recapping Ryu’s current situation–traveling the world, seeking to purge the Satsui no Hado’s dark influence–it also notes his battle with Necalli, which was foretold in the ancient prophecy depicted in the Soul Consuming Darkness’ own Character Story.

As for Evil Ryu, the Shadaloo Activity Report notes that his likes are “defeating the strong,” with his dislikes being, unsurprisingly, “the weak.” Evil Ryu represents the complete opposite of the Ryu we all know and love, consumed by the Satsui no Hado in exchange for its unparalleled power. His profile artwork retains his updated look from Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, including his now-iconic scarred chest, and similar to his appearance in the Street Fighter III “Ryu Final” manga.

Next up is Ken, who, in addition to his regular profile, comes bundled with a look at “Brainwashed Ken,” noted by the Activity Report as being from a “parallel universe,”–suggesting, perhaps, that he is the “Violent Ken” seen in SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos. However: a version of Ken brainwashed by M. Bison’s Psycho Power (with the intent to lure out Ryu) has also existed in the Street Fighter Alpha 3 storyline, as well as in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. His likes are, apparently, fighting and “the smell of blood,” while his dislike is simply “boredom.”

In summary:

Ken becomes jealous as Ryu gets closer and closer to becoming a true martial artist. But Ken’s heart is weak, and is consumed by this jealousy. Bison’s Psycho Power resonates with fear and suffering, and can easily control people who fall victim to their own emotions. Ken’s regular flame turns purple due to the Psycho Power, and his blows become filled with hatred. However, when Ken sees Ryu’s red headband, he temporarily gains control of himself, because he recalls all of the memories he shared with his eternal rival.

“All men bow before me! I’m the strongest woman in the world!” In Chun-Li’s entry, the Activity Report  details the “original heroine” and her role in stopping Bison’s latest schemes in the Cinematic Story Expansion.

Zangief’s profile states that the Red Cyclone is currently on a pro-wrestling tour with Alex–and his biggest fan, Rainbow Mika, of course–when he receives a summons from Karin Kanzuki about stopping Shadaloo’s Operation C.H.A.I.N.S.

Dhalsim has become an even greater Yoga master since the events of Street Fighter IV, due to his strict training in the art–to the point where he is nearly deified by the people of India. After aiding Ryu in his inner struggles, he is confronted by the ancient warrior Necalli. His son Datta and his wife Sally are also both featured in his profile. It is noted that “Sally keeps the entire family energetic with her fantastic cooking,” though Dhalsim’s stretchy limbs don’t appear to have much use around the house. They also train together in Yoga as a family, but the other two are not able to elongate their body like the Yoga master can.

The “Paradoxical Avenger,” Nash, has been resurrected by the Secret Society in Street Fighter V, with the former American Air Force Lieutenant now having the sole purpose of killing M. Bison. Formerly best friends with Guile, Nash feels betrayed and only believes in himself now–in his former life, he was known as a calculated and cool character, and had a strong sense of justice; now the only thing left is a cold husk of a man whose only objective is revenge.

See Super Smash Bros. Brawl Rise from Its Ashes this November at Revival of Brawl

With Super Smash Con briefly resurrecting Super Smash Bros. Brawl for its regular legacy tournament, CLASH Tournaments are attempting to bring the game back into the limelight with a dedicated Brawl event later this year. Titled Revival of Brawl, this two day event in Philadelphia from November 26-27th will show spectators the game which spawned so many of Super Smash Bros.for Wii U’s greats. Nairo, ANTi, Ally, Dabuz, ZeRo–these are just some of the players that were forged in the fires of Brawl and this tournament will act as a glance back in time, to an era that many current Smash players may have missed out on.

The tournament will be divided up into three major events; Singles, Doubles and a special Mid-Tier event. Singles will have Meta Knight and Ice Climbers legal so everyone can be reminded of the terror they inflicted upon the masses. Doubles will have double Meta Knight banned to allow for more diverse teams while the Mid-Tier event will allow the lower end of the cast to shine–without the fear of Meta Knights, Snakes and Ice Climbers dominating the bracket. A full legal character list for Mid Tiers will be revealed in due course over on the official Revival of Brawl website, as well as details on which old school Brawl players and commentators are attending.

With Smash 64 staging a grand comeback over the past few years, this tournament may signal a small rebirth for Brawl by enticing new players to pick up this game, which is so influential on the current state of Smash. If you are at all interested in this grand Smash history lesson, follow the Revival of Brawl Twitter page and keep your eyes peeled for its smash.gg page for details on registration in the near future.
