Latest Rivals of Aether Patch Substantially Changes Game Mechanics

The development of Rivals of Aether continues with the 0.15.0 patch for PC, which hits Steam today. The Beefy Aether Doods have provided a handy video guide that showcases the incoming changes.

Many of the game’s baseline mechanics have been significantly altered, contributing to a faster, more responsive overall feel. The animation of parrying a projectile can now be smoothly canceled into a follow-up attack; air attacks now have no landing recovery, which means it’s easy to continue pressure. However, there are exceptions to this–and the Beefy Aether Doods point them out. There’s also no more whiff lag, except on dash attacks.

Other major changes include a new CPU setting for parrying, an overall increase of run speed, and the ability to create custom character colors. The video finishes up with the character-specific updates.

Rivals of Aether also recently launched on Xbox Game Preview. Check out Rivals of Aether on Steam.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 & Killer Instinct Added to SoCal Regionals 2016

When SoCal Regionals 2016’s lineup was first announced, there was some disappointment at the exclusion of certain games; well, fans of those games can now rest easy, thanks to this latest announcement from the organizers.

In a recent tweet, Level Up’s Alex Valle announced that both Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Killer Instinct have been added to the tournament lineup for SoCal Regionals 2016.

While KI and UMvC3 aren’t exactly the most popular games at the moment, both have strong and dedicated competitive followings. The UMvC3 community in particular has been reinvigorated–thanks in part to the game’s strong showing at Evo 2016.

SoCal Regionals 2016 takes place from October 14 to 16 at the Esports Arena in Orange County, CA.

Capcom Hasn’t Forgotten about Street Fighter V’s Daily Challenges, Update Coming Soon

While Street Fighter V has seen a lot of new content added over the past few months, the one feature that has yet to appear are the daily “Targets”: challenges for players to earn additional precious Fight Money. Capcom will be giving an update on this soon.

In reply to a question on the r/StreetFighter subreddit, Capcom’s Neidel “Haunts” Crisan stated that they will be addressing the daily challenges in an upcoming blog update. According to Haunts, they haven’t been able to offer any new information on them because they’ve been focused on the Capcom Pro Tour DLC, as well as working on a general FAQ for the game. Have a look at his original reply here.

With the number of things Fight Money is needed to purchase in the Street Fighter V Shop, any feature that allows players to earn more would be welcome. Here’s hoping that we get to see this promised blog update about the daily challenges soon.

Gerald Lee from Core-A Gaming Gives His Perspective of Evo 2016 in His Latest Video

While the hype from Evo may be dying down, the input from people in attendance continues to flow in. Here to add his own perspective to the event is Gerald “mintcheerios” Lee, of Core-A Gaming.

Gerald Lee had previously attended Evolution 2013 as a spectator, not a player. This year, his participation in the event changed: he came not only as a player, but as a content producer whom people found themselves excited to meet. As such, he is able to give a unique perspective on the event.

Lee first provides a perfunctory history on Evo, and then compares his experience between both events. He gives some takes on both playing and spectating, and being a part of some of the after-hours events, such as the ArcadeStream/Hawaii Salty Suite–which featured such notable players as XSK Samurai and Keoma. He also talks further about how Evolution proves itself the FGC variant of the Olympics, and its notable dream matches–such as Knee of Tekken fame playing Poongko (of mainly Street Fighter notoriety) in the top 8 of Tekken 7: Fated Retribution.

This video is certainly worth a watch, as Lee entertains and educates while explaining his point of view with eloquence and humor.

ESL Sponsors Qualifiers for Brooklyn Beatdown Street Fighter V Tournament

Street Fighter V players will have multiple opportunities to qualify for ESL’s Brooklyn Beatdown tournament, including an online tournament series for North America, Brazil and Europe.

Southern California’s Wednesday Night Fights will host their own series of qualifier tournaments, with the winning player earning a fully paid trip to New York City for the October event.

The top eight participants of WNF each week will each receive ranking points towards the finals event. Last night’s tournament was the first qualifier, and the series will culminate the final event deciding the winning player on September 21.

Brooklyn’s Next Level Arcade also announced that they will be giving away weekend event passes–for ESL One and Brooklyn Beatdown–to participants at their weekly Next Level Battle Circuit tournaments and weekend events. Based on tweets from the arcade, the passes wont be given exclusively to the winners.

ESL’s Brooklyn Beatdown Open Cups–their series of online qualifiers–will continue online, with the top two placers each week earning a spot in the regional finals later this month. The North American final will be held Aug. 23 and includes four qualifiers so far: Chris Tatarian, XsK Samurai (winner of Capcom Pro Tour Online Qualifer #1), MikeandIke12, and Yuudai.

The European and Brazilian regional finals will be held online August 28 and August 31, respectively. For the full schedule of Open Cups ahead of the regional finals, visit ESL’s website.

Brooklyn Beatdown will be held at the Barclays Center October 1-2, during ESL One New York. The tournament will be open entry with a player cap of 1024, and a prize pool of $75,000.

Ralf, Leona and Clark Report for Duty in the Team Ikari Trailer for King of Fighters XIV

Prepare for explosive punches, devastating chops, and back breakers a-plenty as Team Ikari makes quite the entrance in this new King of Fighter XIV trailer. Along with showing off Ralf, Leona and Clark’s Super Special and Climax Special Moves, this trailer shows the team fighting on a brand new aircraft carrier stage–complete with military personnel watching as two people knock seven bells out of each other.

The Navy must have done an appropriate risk assessment, as jets are taking off and engineers are doing maintenance as normal in the background of the fight; it must be the lunchtime entertainment for everyone on the ship. I have to say that Ralf’s Climax Special is especially vicious, as he magically shoots flak out of his fists then punches someone so hard that they explode.

Jam Out to TheKoreanDrifter’s Hybrid Combo/Music Video for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Marvel keeps on trucking, and so do the combo videos. Back for the 16th installment in the ‘Experi-Mental’ series, KoreanDrifter has released a combo video for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 which is half exhibition, half dance track. The video starts off fairly normal, showing off some cool loops for Akuma, and team combos using Amaterasu’s Veil of Mist, before going nuts with Level 3 setups–which sees Drifter carefully positioning himself to deal even more damage once the opponents exits the missing Level 3 animation.

If that wasn’t enough, the combo video then shifts into music mode, with the last three minutes of the video having combo hits timed to the beat of the song. This includes characters practically dancing to the music in split screen, hits being layered and pitch shifted to match the backing track, and some mental editing to send this combo video over the edge.

Bring Out Your Inner Kamemushi with This Mega Man Footstool Guide for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Despite playing a character that was generally considered middling at best, Kamemushi’s brilliant run at Evo 2016 with Mega Man opened a lot of eyes to some of the nasty tricks that the super fighting robot has at his disposal. One string that appeared multiple times in Kamemushi’s victories over players like Void, Mr. R and ZeRo stemmed from his ability to consistently land footstools, which led into a devastating combo that has become almost synonymous with his play.

As we reported earlier this week, Beefy Smash Doods have explored the idea of footstooling out of shield–which should make landing such combos even easier–but My Smash Corner has taken it even further and explored exactly how to land the combo, how to extend it, and even looked into exactly when it kills. If you’re a Blue Bomber in the making, you should definitely check it out.
