The musical history of Guile’s classic Street Fighter theme, as compiled by TheDarkAce

“No need for talk. Let’s do this.”

If you’re in the mood for over two hours of the theme that goes with everything, TheDarkAce has you covered. This compilation of the multiple versions of Guile’s iconic theme that originated in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior follows the music’s changes up to modern titles like Street Fighter V, and even includes remixes of the tune that were released outside of the games themselves.

If you are feeling more of a wandering warrior vibe, TheDarkAce also put together five (!) hours of Ryu’s theme.

Capcom announces 3v3 Japanese Street Fighter League for 2019

With the intent to capitalize on the blooming esports industry in Japan, Capcom has officially announced a new team-based league for 2019: the Street Fighter League.

League matches are currently planned to feature 3-on-3 team battles, with six teams formed from a mix of both officially JeSU-pro licensed and unlicensed competitors. Capcom hopes to start in the Spring of ’19, though no date has officially been set yet.

This makes them the second fighting game company this month officially revealing plans to take advantage of Japan’s new Japanese eSports Union, right behind Arc System Works.

The “Book of Souls” encyclopedia project from Uppercut Editions is the best Mortal Kombat book you haven’t read yet

When will we see this book made manifest in the Earthrealm?

The bloody and savage fantasy world that has developed around the Mortal Kombat franchise has many fans, but few are as passionate as those at Uppercut Editions, who have been working to get official backing behind their massive MK book project, the Book of Souls.

The book has gone through a few iterations (previously titled as the Book of Remembrance) but the goal (and the results) have been consistent: this is a massive collection of Mortal Kombat facts, lore, and trivia that the fans who love this world could easily become lost in. The 250+ page book covers the entire history of the franchise from its beginnings, up to and including Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2.

mortal kombat encyclopedia preview

The catch is: this isn’t a published book, not yet. Uppercut Editions has been working to get their fan project some official backing from Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios, but to date that has not been accomplished. According to Uppercut Editions:

We are a group of MK fans who started this project 3 years ago with almost no support from WB and NRS, and only advice from a DC comics author, Shawn Kittelsen. While we contacted various publishers — Udon Entertainment, DK publishing, Prima Games, Insight Editions and some other smaller publishers — all who wanted to work with us, we couldn’t quite gain traction with WB. Our books currently sit inside NetherRealm Studios for review, and we need fan help to basically put pressure on them to make this for all MK fans.

The project started as a petition and surged to over 10,000 signatures and we even had Richard Epcar voice and record for our trailer we did.

You can see some “unboxing” preview videos below from unCAGEDgamez and History Behind the Warrior, showing off early test printings of the book:

The most recent version of the project is also viewable digitally over at Uppercut Editions itself. Mortal Kombat fans definitely should go check it out — and if you like what you see, spread the word.

This “Equilibrium Calculator for Fighting Games” plots out theoretical, optimal play

If you’ve ever dived into the world of game theory and didn’t immediately run away screaming once you started reading about minimax values, then JP Street Fighter V player karamaru has a tool made just for you.

The Equilibrium Calculator for Fighting Games allows you to plug in the reward (or punishment) damage you would receive for several options from a single situation, and ranks which strategies are best for both the player on offense and defense. This tool was designed for SFV okizeme, but its editable fields allow you to tweak the tool for virtually any fighting game. This tool’s output doesn’t necessarily tell you what to do, but rather, what options are the most rewarding in a vacuum when you have no information on a player.

You can play around with the Equilibrium Calculator for Fighting Games here.

Echo Fox recaps the Street Fighter V and Dragon Ball FighterZ action from Tokyo Game Show and CEOtaku

Major tournaments are hot-spots of exciting fights, and CEOtaku 2018 was no exception. Between the tense divisions of Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], the high-speed clashes of Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle, and even the wildly skillful Catherine bracket, there never seemed to be a dull moment at the Wyndham Resort — or the Tokyo Game Show.

On top of game announcements and details, TGS functioned as a Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition tournament, doubling down on the excitement from Orlando. With so much going on in just a few short days, it can be easy to forget the greatest hits — luckily, Echo Fox has compiled their team’s best moments from TGS, as well as their Dragon Ball FighterZ involvement at CEOtaku.

Speedkicks shares his love of Tekken 7 Season 2 in this new BornFree interview

“For me, a video game is a puzzle with an objective to figure out. Spending that time understanding how win a game of Tekken, that’s where the fun is.”

Speedkicks is easily one of the Tekken scene’s most recognizable top talents. What might be less known is that the journey he took to get there started in Tekken Tag Tournament 2‘s beta test — and a lot of labbing to understand the puzzle that is fighting games, as opposed to some nebulous goal of “being the best”.

In his hour-long interview with BornFree, he shares his origin story, his love of Season 2’s re-balance, and his concern over Tekken World Tour’s new format. If you want to learn more about a top Tekken player’s mindset, this is the interview to watch!

Automatic Replay Viewer adds support for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

If you play Skullgirls or Rivals of Aether on PC, there’s a good chance you either use (or have heard of) taylorsussex‘s Automatic Replay Viewer. This program allows for sets of consecutive replays to be played back automatically, and can start/stop recording software such as OBS with a hotkey. It does this by simulating the inputs required to playback a specified amount of replays, making it useful for recording long sets without the system strain.

If that sounds good to you and you play BlazBlue:Cross Tag Battle, well…

There you go. To download the program and read the latest versions patch notes, head over to GitHub.

Savage Reign and The King of Fighters 2001 coming to ACA NEO GEO

At the 2018 Tokyo Game Show, Hamster Corporation announced the next batch of games coming to their Arcade Archives line. Among these were a number of NEO GEO titles coming to ACE NEO GEO, including a couple of fighters.

Coming to the ACA NEO GEO line are Savage Reign and The King of Fighters 2001. The latter should need no introduction, being the final installment of The King of Fighters‘ NESTS Saga. The former, on the other hand, is a game set in the distant future of the Fatal Fury/Art of Fighting timeline, featuring a mix of weapons-based combat, and the plane-switching first seen in Fatal Fury.

In addition to these, the arcade version of Nintendo’s Urban Champion was also listed among the upcoming releases for the regular Arcade Archives line.

As for when all of these will be released, no details as of yet have been given. Same as for what consoles Savage Reign and The King of Fighters 2001 will be released on (Urban Champion, being a Nintendo game, is a Switch exclusive).

Catch some high-level Dead or Alive 6 action from the special tournament at the 2018 Tokyo Game Show

As part of their presence at the 2018 Tokyo Game Show, KOEI Tecmo and Team NINJA hosted a special tournament for their upcoming Dead or Alive 6.

The tournament allowed a number of top players who were in attendance at the Tokyo Game Show to try the game out. For many, this would be their first time playing Dead or Alive 6 at a high level, forcing them to adapt to the game’s many changes (the new meter system, and a more DOA3-like stun game).

For those who missed out on catching the tournament, 적크풍크 has uploaded footage of it on their YouTube channel. The footage below is quite extensive, and interestingly enough, doesn’t feature overlays for player names, so some viewers may have trouble keeping up with the action. That said, for those who stick with it, it does showcase some amazing gameplay, especially with the characters revealed for TGS.

Dead or Alive 6 is set to launch on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on February 15, 2019.

Studio Trigger’s Kazuki Nakashima is writing a new story for Kill la Kill the Game: IF starring Satsuki Kiryuin

Arc System Works recently revealed some new details regarding the story of Kill la Kill the Game: IF. Specifically, the game will feature an original story starring Satsuki Kiryuin, series deuteragonist and rival of Ryuko Matoi.

The new story is being penned by none other than the original writer of the Kill la Kill anime, Studio Trigger’s Kazuki Nakashima. The story diverges from the original plot Kill la Kill, around the middle of the anime’s story.

As part of this new story, Satsuki gains a new costume called “Junketsu Shinzui”. The new costume, designed by Shigeto Koyama with touch-ups by Kill la Kill character designer Sushio, is meant to be Satsuki’s counterpart to the “Senketsu Kisaragi” that Ryuko wore during the latter part of the anime.

Interestingly enough, “Junketsu Shinzui” was an unused design that was originally shown in one of the art books released for the series. In fact, the silhouette of the design that ArcSys has released (which you can see below) does seem to be based on that unused design.
