A Violent Swan Song: Mortal Kombat X at Evo 2016

Although Mortal Kombat might have a long and storied history, there’s something special about the most recent installment. After all, in what other game can you pit horror movie star Leatherface and the eponymous Xenomorph against one another in a battle to the death? And in what other game can you have three versions of each of them, all with their own unique styles? In that, and in its own cinematic stylings, Mortal Kombat X has a flair for putting on a show–the MK staple finishers–Fatalities, etc.–might be the best example, but every bout comes with the sort of flavor and design that wouldn’t be out of place in a Hollywood blockbuster.

At Evo 2016, the best Mortal Kombat players in the world will meet on the greatest stage of them all, each intent on carving their name in the record books. MKX seems to be winding down in favor of upstart brother franchise Injustice’s second entry, so this may well be the last chance these players have to etch their names into Mortal Kombat X’s Evo history, and the $50,000 pot bonus is plenty of extra encouragement to do just that. One thing is for sure; they’re going to put on an unforgettable show.

The Prodigy and the Invader

Whenever he sits down in front of a NetherRealm game, Dominique “SonicFox” McClean is instantly one of the favorites. With more than three years of nearly constant victory behind him, the argument could be made that the teenager is already one of the greatest Mortal Kombat players of all time. His resume includes dozens of major tournament wins in Mortal Kombat 9, Injustice and MKX, along with some staggeringly convincing money match victories over the likes of Mortal Kombat veteran Perfect Legend. He’s no stranger to the Evo stage either, having notched victories in both Injustice and Mortal Kombat. Now, at Evo 2016, he’s looking for the fabled threepeat–victory in three consecutive years.

Hoping to stand in his way in a repeat of last years finals with just one little difference, Problem X Promotions’ Denom “A F0xy Grampa” Jones has spent the last year proving that Mortal Kombat is an international game; North Americans are no longer the only real competition. The Englishman has clashed with SonicFox time and again over recent months, invariably in the grand finals of a major tournament and, thus far at least, the honors are relatively even. Evo is the grandest stage of them all, though, and with this potentially being the final installment of MKX at Evo, it’s Foxy’s best chance of proving that he’s more than just a contender for the best in the world.

At the moment, Evo is looking to be one of the climactic battles in a conflict that has spanned a dozen different battlefields. For SonicFox and A F0xy Grampa, more than just a title will be on the line, and although it would be foolish to see this as the end of the war, it will almost certainly be a slobberknocker worthy of the grandest stage of them all.

Kompeting for more than third place

Though SonicFox might be battling A F0xy Grampa for the title of tournament favorite going into Vegas, Evo will be far more than the story of those two men. Panda Global’s most recent acquisition Brad “Scar” Vaughn has proved more than capable of disrupting the duo’s feud and, with the weight of Panda Global behind him, has more encouragement than ever to do something special at Evo. Watch out for his salt-inspiring Sonya, since in the hands of Scar you’ll see her played at the very highest of levels.

Of course, if Scar wants to play party crasher, he’s going to face some stiff competition from a whole host of others who want to do the same. Evo 2016 sees the strongest teams in the game heading to Vegas, with almost all of Critical Reaction, YOMI, Noble, Evilbizz and Orbit’s players making an appearance. Don’t let the smaller size of MKX’s player pool at Evo this year fool you; almost every major killer in the game will be there, looking to make waves.

Many players who have been successful in previous years are returning to push for the top prize, among them the likes of Tim “Honeybee” Commandeur and Ryan “WoundCowboy” Gonzalez. These are MKX veterans who are strong and experienced enough to make even the best players in the world nervous about facing them. They’ll be battling alongside upstarts like Dragon, Juan “Toxin” Contreras and Matthew “Biohazard” Commandeur, all of whom have made a recent splash with their strong results. For some of them, this could be their first and last chance to show the world what they’re made of in MKX, so expect them to show up with all guns blazing, hoping to make their mark. With more than 700 players battling it out in Las Vegas, there is massive potential for top quality play and even the chance that someone we’ve never heard of will provide some upsets.

And, with such a strong showing from both Canada and Europe, the pressure will be on the American players to defend their home turf. Mortal Kombat has been dominated by the American scene for years; with a whole host of internationals looking threatening, that might be set to change. The crowd will be behind them every step of the way, so watch out for the home team to put a little extra venom in games against the invaders. Equally, this is a fantastic opportunity for other communities to prove that they’re just as capable of winning on the grandest stages, so they’ll no doubt be pushing hard to do just that.

Acid burns and face hugs

One of the characters that will definitely be making its mark at Evo is Alien. Since being released as part of MKX’s Kombat Pack 2, the Xenomorph has become more popular than it has been since the 90s, thanks to a handful of astonishingly strong tools that make it one of the most dominating characters in the game. In the hands of players like SonicFox, Alien tears through rounds at a breakneck pace thanks to residual damage, lengthy combos and devastating mixups. Don’t be surprised if a large chunk of high placing kombatants do so using the Xenomorph; don’t be surprised if the losers show their frustration.

Alien’s not the only standout character in the roster, though; A F0xy Grampa’s signature character, Mileena, is hot on its heels. Mileena may have fewer tools than the Alien does, but she is nonetheless blisteringly effective thanks to her own powerful mixup game. A F0xy Grampa has done the best job of showing off how dangerous she can be, so you can expect to see her played at the highest level during the tournament, though there will no doubt be a handful of other players following in his footsteps.

Series staple Sonya rounds out the trio of top tiers that you can expect to see at Evo, but that doesn’t mean you’ll only see those three at the top level. With such a huge roster and a variety of options and playstyles with each character, MKX has given players the opportunity to express themselves with their favorite characters like never before, and there are plenty of character loyalists who will be doing just that at Evo this year, with players like Honeybee likely to be the only high-level representation of their chosen characters. Watching Honeybee’s D’Vorah or Matrin “Madzin” Niedziala’s Sub-Zero snare games and sets from the best characters and players around is a treat as much thanks to novelty as it is the high level of play on display. Make no mistake, just because they’re using unusual characters doesn’t mean that these aren’t some of the best kompetitors around.

A bittersweet show on the world’s biggest stage

Although signs may point to this being a last hurrah for Mortal Kombat X at Evo, this isn’t a tournament that you’ll want to miss out on. Evo is the greatest stage of them all, and the best kombatants in the world are flocking down to put on a show worthy of it. Hollywood’s scriptwriters couldn’t have done a better job of setting the scene; now it’s up to the players to act out the finale.

We’ll see the strongest in the world duke it out to earn a place on finals day, and to do so they will have to run the gauntlet of killers from around the world. Heading into the tournament we’re left to ask ourselves if SonicFox can really do it again, if A F0xy Grampa can show that the UK can compete with the best the world has to offer, if Scar’s new sponsorship will be a weight around his neck or a broad pair of shoulders to stand upon. Will it be another USA versus UK final? Can one of the up and coming fighters make waves? Or will it be the veterans who walk out onto the stage at Mandalay Bay?

One thing is for sure though; it might be set to kick off Finals Sunday, sitting uneasily in the early morning slot, but MKX is going to give you plenty of reason to rise and shine.

Rise from the Grave with Nightmare Geese in The King of Fighters XIV

Nightmare Geese, an alternate form of Geese Howard, is usually reserved to replace the Boss character in games that he’s technically dead for. And, even though his normal form is alive and kicking in The King of Fighters XIV, this especially spectacular specter is set to make a stunning return as well. Despite not being his own character with unique move properties, the ghastly appearance and haunted voice put to rest any thoughts of him being lacking in any way.

This DLC costume for Geese, along with Classic Ryo and a Neo Esaka Dynamic Theme, will be available as pre-order bonuses for players who purchase the game early through the PlayStation Store.

You can see Nightmare Geese in action below.

Ed Boon Points to The Killing Joke, Flashpoint as Possible Clues for Injustice 2’s Roster

Most fans of DC Comics or NetherRealm Studios’ games are now hard at work trying to figure out which characters will be in Injustice 2.

In a recent interview with EPNdotTV, Ed Boon was asked about which books from DC Comic’s library fans should look to for hints on who will be making it into Injustice 2. In response to this, the NetherRealm founder point to two specific books: Alan Moor’s classic graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke, and the more recent Flashpoint crossover from Geoff Johns.

For those not familiar with it, The Killing Joke is a highly influential graphic novel that defined Batman stories for more than a decade after. Aside from the Dark Knight himself, the book features the Joker and Batgirl, who would later become the Oracle after the events of the book.

Flashpoint on the other hand was a crisis crossover that made several alterations to the DC multiverse, while setting up their 53. Heavily involved in it are the Flash, as well as chararcters such as Booster Gold, Reverse Flash, Cyborg and more.

Of course, this isn’t the only thing covered by the interview. You can see what else they talk about including Ed Boon’s comments on the possibility of an MK vs. DCU 2, in the video below.

Injustice 2 is set to launch in 2017. In the meantime, NetherRealm studios is set to announce two more characters next week at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Pick Up Some Fireball-Based Option Selects in Street Fighter V

As much as Capcom has indicated that they don’t want option selects as part of Street Fighter V’s toolbox, they continue to surface. Stream Fighters has uploaded this video, demonstrating a potentially new one: they attack with a fireball, with a Critical Art buffered: if the fireball connects, it’s followed by a linked Critical Art–but if the fireball is blocked, then the CA doesn’t start.

It appears to work with multiple characters, and possibly with specials other than fireballs as well. There is some debate as to whether this is new tech, or just something older getting new attention, and it is still unclear why exactly this option select works.

How long this option select will actually remain usable is also questionable; Capcom has shown some new alacrity in patching out glitches, so this tool may be short-lived.

Smash-Influenced Brawlout Seeks to Reclaim the ‘Golden Age’ of Platform Fighters

The upcoming platform fighter by Angry Mob Games, Brawlout, combines the “platforming and win conditions” of Super Smash Bros. with the “various combat moves and ground combos” from more traditional fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter.

Players will be able to compete locally or online in a handful of different modes supporting up to 8 characters at once. These characters begin with “accessible attacks” that are enhanced with special moves and combos.

If you’re interested in taking an early look at the game, head on over to The MIX: Evo Indie Showcase which is set to take place on July 15 and 16 during–you guessed it–Evo.

5v5 US vs. Japan Pokkén Tournament Crew Battle Set to Happen at Evo

It’s happening!

Team Japan and Team USA are going head to head in a 5v5 Crew Battle at Evo. Talks about a possible crew battle at Pokkén’s largest international event thus far have been in the works for a little while. Through a considerable amount of organization from players of both sides, the event is set to happen on Evo Sunday and the players have been chosen.

Image created and provided courtesy of Burnside.

There’s a lot of interesting things already to consider in this showdown.

The lack of one of Japan’s absolute finest, Azazel, is surprising. Azazel’s exclusion is the equivalent of Suicune Master or BIM? sitting out. Given his unusual character choice, and the fact that he and Suicune Master have at least an hours’ worth of training experience with each other, he could have been a wall for Team Japan.

On the flipside, the character diversity of Team Japan is also likely to be a considerable asset. Though it’s probably safe to say Team USA is ready for the Mewtwo Bros and Sceptiles (and probably, to an extent, Pikachu Libre), Braixen/Weavile are almost completely invisible in the US brackets and could provide problems if every member of Team USA doesn’t come completely prepared. The represented character diversity means Team USA has to prepare for twice as many opponents, potentially. Min-maxing theory vs. flexibility is really on display between these character selections.

It’s currently unclear–and unlikely–if this (very unofficial, community organized) crew battle will be streamed in any meaningful way, but Cat Fight himself has promised to record all matches, which is good, as this will be the most capsulized measurement of US vs. Japan Pokkén yet.

Who is your money on?

The Fate of the Iron Fist! Tekken 7: Fated Retribution at Evo 2016

After Street Fighter, Tekken is probably the second-biggest fighting franchise in the genre’s history–yet despite its pedigree we’ve seen a bit of a lull over the last few years as other games have grown. The latest iteration, Tekken 7: Fated Retribution holds the second-lowest registration of any EVO 2016 event, topping Killer Instinct by only three players! This may be due to the lack of a console version of the game–Tekken 7 at Evo 2015 was played on the arcade version, and Tekken 7: Fated Retribution will be played the same way this year–reportedly we won’t be seeing the game’s console release until early 2017. But 549 competitors is still a lot of players eager to exchange blows in the Iron Fist Tournament, regardless of being dwarfed by Street Fighter V’s numbers.

THE GAME

t7_character_cgi_montageTekken is one of the greats of the 3D fighting genre, and as a 3D fighter it has a much different feel and dynamic than its original 2D inspiration. Tekken 7 introduced new gameplay mechanics such as Power Crushers (moves that can absorb damage without being interrupted) and Rage Arts (similar to Street Fighter IV’s Ultra Combos), and a refined okizeme system. The game currently boasts a character roster of 29 playable fighters including classic characters such as Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi Mishima, King, Paul, Nina, and Yoshimitsu; newcomers include mysterious Kazumi Mishima, Arabian warrior Shaheen, and perky cat-girl Lucky Chloe. The Fated Retribution upgrade added improved graphics, the Rage Drive mechanic, and the most notable addition to date: Street Fighter’s Akuma.

THE DEMON

Tekken 7 got a huge boost to hype when it was revealed that Akuma would be joining the roster, and not just as a bonus character but actually integrated into the game’s lore. After Street Fighter X Tekken, this wasn’t really that much of a shock, as a Capcom/Bandai Namco pattern of collaboration has already been established. In fact, many believe that the demon joining battle with the Mishima family paves the way for the much-delayed Tekken X Street Fighter, but time will tell.

However, Akuma’s crossover has drawn some prominent Street Fighter players to join the 3D fight…

THE PLAYERS

While there’s a fair amount of footage of EG|Justin Wong taking Akuma into battle, Wong is not registered for Tekken 7 this weekend in Vegas. His opponent in the above video, however–Hoa Luu, AKA Circa|Anakin, was the winner of Community Effort Orlando‘s recent Tekken 7 event (using JACK-7, Paul, and Shaheen) and he also took the top spot at Combo Breaker 2016 earlier in the year using JACK-7 and Dragunov. With these two big wins under their belt, this may be our Tekken 7 champion at Evo 2016.

They are not without competition, however! Secret|PoongKo took the top spot at CEO’s T7 Auction Tournament with Akuma, making them another one to watch in Vegas. Other recent high-rankers that are in this year’s Tekken pools include Mateo (Matthew Szabo), Fred Distance (Fredrick Osei), Circa|Speedkicks (Stephen Stafford), NG|Obscure (Vante Flint), and Reflex (Dick Varian). But the top eights seem to vary significantly between Tekken 7 events so far, so there’s still a lot of room for a newcomer to step in and place high.

t7_lucky_chloe_narrow_crop

Kazuya, Heihachi, Law, King, Steve, Paul, and JACK-7 are all popular choices among the top players, but there is still some variety in character selection. Even Lucky Chloe saw some play from RenoFace, Combo Breaker’s 3rd place finisher. But as much attention as Akuma’s addition has drawn, he doesn’t yet appear as a popular choice for the serious players (aside from PoongKo above). We’ll have to see how far the Satsui no Hado will carry Akuma into the Tekken fight–but at this point, it looks like he might be more useful for marketing than winning tournaments.

THE FUTURE

This will be Tekken 7’s last fight as an arcade-only title at Evo; next year (presuming its return), the console release should really shake up the competition as the game becomes more readily available for training. In the meantime, look forward to seeing some fierce 3D action from these contenders–will CEO’s and Combo Breaker’s fighters hold their claim, or is there a new King of the Iron Fist Tournament waiting to be crowned?

Check out the previews of other games at Evo: Pokkén Tournament; Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-; Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee.
