My Smash Corner Weighs the Pros and Cons of Each Input Device Compatible with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Deciding which input device to use is an important step in any fighting game player’s life, and few games have as many choices in this area as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It’s got legacy controllers, cost-effective controllers, higher end controllers, the cumbersome GamePad, and even a second portable game console that can be hooked up and used as a controller itself. With all of these choices, making a decision on how to tackle the game can be difficult.

In a new video, My Smash Corner takes an objective approach to discussing the pros and cons of each potential input device. Additionally, if you’re looking for the most effective way to configure your controller of choice, you’ll find tips on that as well.

Desk Takes On Street Fighter V’s Challenge Mode with One Hand Tied Behind His Back

Generally speaking, watching someone else complete Challenge Mode trials in Street Fighter V doesn’t offer much entertainment. A simple trip to the pause menu can provide a look at any of the combos in action, so having an idea of what to expect before giving each string a shot isn’t an issue, and, let’s face it, most of these combos require little by way of manual dexterity. Rare exceptions aside–looking at you, Karin #6–folks should be able to collect their Fight Money from Challenge Mode without issue.

But that’s Challenge Mode as the game presents it. Leave it to Desk to crank that challenge up a few more notches. Instead of simply performing each of the 10th trials for every character in Street Fighter V, Desk’s newest video shows him pounding out these final combos using only one hand. Since a video of this nature begs the inclusion of proof, Desk has taken the time to embed a hand cam so viewers can see every twist this single wrist makes.

Core-A Gaming Talks Optimized Punishes in Street Fighter V

A new game often requires a new way of thinking. In the case of Street Fighter V, this is definitely true, and extends all the way to maximizing proper punishes. In a reboot of the “Breaking Street Fighter” series–this time focusing on the new game–Core-A Gaming and Laugh demonstrate some ways to make the most of punish situations.

Without the ability to chip out opponents who have low health–aside from using a Critical Art, of course–making sure every connected hit translates into the most damage possible is more important than ever. While it may be attractive to go for a Crush Counter in a situation where you block something like Ken’s EX Shoryuken, you’ll see in the video that combos can sometimes net additional damage by foregoing the Crush Counter system, instead using a neutral jump immediately after block stun ends to start a combo with a falling normal.

Using jump-ins to begin punish combos certainly isn’t a mechanic unique to Street Fighter V, but the additional counter hit state caused when striking during the recovery of moves like Ken’s Shoryuken is. This counter hit state affords punishers extra hit stun, and, therefore, extra opportunities for securing damage that wouldn’t otherwise exist.

Use Kim Wu’s Way of the Dragon to Set Up Meaties in Killer Instinct

In her transition to Season 3 of the rebooted Killer Instinct, Kim Wu has gained a few interesting changes from her classic incarnation. One of these is Way of the Dragon, a series of target combos that act somewhat like a Mortal Kombat or Tekken strings in that subsequent attacks come out on whiff, as well as on hit or block.

This property, as well as the fact that any hit of these target combos can be special canceled, means that Way of the Dragon can be used to set up meaty situations off her throw. In this new video, Hughboyzilla demonstrates how a well-timed application of these attacks can be used to beat out wakeup options. Additionally, the fact that the medium punch version moves Kim backwards means that it can also avoid certain invincible reversals, allowing her to punish them.
