Street Fighter V Roundup – Alex Setplay, Combos, and More

Soon, players will be spending their first weekend with Street Fighter V’s newest addition, Alex. With all that potential time in the lab coming up, we’re here to help you make the most of it with this collection of Alex footage from around the community! Let’s jump right in!

DaFeetLee has had a couple of days to figure Alex out, and in that process, he has come up with loads of setplay options following a variety of the returning fighter’s tools. This video is quite long, clocking in at nearly ten minutes, and offers more than enough setup options to satisfy all of the setplay fiends out there.

Marlonlonmilk keeps things going with a lengthy–over seven minute–collection of Alex beating his opponents to a pulp. These combos and resets range from basic to advanced, so Alex players of all skill levels are certain to find something helpful.

With a little bit of meter and a successful forward throw, Alex can demolish the whole cast. If you’re considering pressing a button against him on wakeup, this video may make you reconsider.

If you’re looking to get started with Alex, the latest offering from Meno Jazz may be just what you’re looking for. This primer offers a look at how to apply the character’s tools in a variety of ways.

It wouldn’t be a new character without new option selects to abuse, and the folks at 4Dstreaming have that covered. As you’ll see in this clip, the demonstrated option select follows a neutral jump and allows its user to block, tech a throw or perform an Air Knee Smash depending on the situation at hand.

Alex stands to reap big benefits from trade situations. As you’re soon to see in this footage from 1PinkyFlamingo, Alex can convert a traded Flash Chop into hundreds of damage. For a quicker look at a similar situation, check out the following footage from Some Fresh Guys.

In the event that Alex lands a throw against a cornered opponent, he can choose to apply this meaty option from drekerrr to keep the pressure (and stun) high.

Dopples offers a slightly longer series of setups that can lead to a guaranteed round victory against most of the cast. This is the sort of thing that won’t work out as planned all that often–especially considering the jump-in involved–but when it does, it’ll be quite the sight to behold.

If you’re just looking to pick up some combo knowledge for Alex, we’ve got plenty of options from which to choose to round out today’s collection. Neekogaming, ElChakotay Andrich, ArT, and Berial Plays all sent in reels collecting some of the best ways for Alex to go about doling out damage.

If you find something crazy over the weekend, send it our way! It may wind up in our next Street Fighter V community roundup!

North American Round 1 Locations Add King of Fighters Trio to NESiCA Cabinets

Since launching the initiative last year, Round 1 has slowly expanded the amount of titles players can access through their NESiCAxLive cabinets. Today, the amusement center chain announced that King of Fighters ’98, King of Fighters 2002, and King of Fighters XIII Climax are now available at every North American location.

Before now, only a handful of titles–Ultra Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue: Central Fiction, and BlazBlue: Chronophantasma EXTEND–were available at the amusement centers, so this development should excite folks hoping to see more obscure games become playable in the United States. According to IPLAYWINNER, this also marks the first time the SNK Playmore trio has been playable in arcades outside of Japan.

To find a Round 1 location near you, be sure to check out their official website.

Skullgirls 2nd Encore Heading to PlayStation Vita on April 5

Earlier today, the folks at PlayStation announced that Skullgirls 2nd Encore will be making its way to PlayStation Vita systems on April 5.

This mobile version is cross buy (meaning if you already own the PlayStation 4 release, you’ll get this free of charge vice versa), and will feature cross-play with the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 versions as well as local multiplayer support via PSTV. Additionally, it will come fully-loaded with all five downloadable characters, a fully-voiced story mode, new challenges, new trials, a new survival mode, and a full array of platinum trophies.

The news comes alongside an announcement that the final Skullgirls patch can be expected soon as well, and will feature lobbies equipped with a mechanic they’re calling “All Play,” allowing players in larger lobbies to pair up and fight among themselves as opposed to having to wait in line.

Corners Extend R. Mika’s Critical Art Range in Street Fighter V

Corners in the fighting genre have proven to be one of the more difficult aspects to implement correctly. It seems so simple; it’s just the side of the stage after all, but even with decades of experience, genre leaders like Capcom can’t seem to get everything quite right when it comes to these borders. We saw evidence of this yesterday, and more just came our way moments ago.

Today’s interaction, as you can see in the quick clip we’ve included, shows a vastly extended range for R. Mika’s Critical Art when she has her back to the wall. The truly strange part about this is the fact that her actual animation also covers more ground before she goes for the grab. It’s almost like she’s bouncing off the ropes.

Though the video only demonstrates this occurrence on player two’s side, we can confirm that it applies to player one’s side as well. It also seems to only apply to R. Mika, as Laura doesn’t receive the same boost to her own Critical Art. Let us know what you think of this useful technique in the comments.

Key Fighting Game Designer Leaves Capcom for SNK Playmore

Hidetoshi Ishizawa, better known by the handle Neo_G, has announced his departure from Capcom for a position at competitor SNK Playmore. The name may not be as familiar to newcomers, but Ishizawa’s lengthy resume includes work on beloved titles like Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Capcom vs. SNK 2.

This news has been confirmed by Arika vice president Ichiro Mihara, dispelling a common theory that it was perhaps a poor April Fools’ Day joke.

Due to Ishizawa’s prominent position at Capcom, this could be seen as something of a bad omen for the company and fans of their releases, especially when combined with what appears to be a lack of fighting game planning beyond Street Fighter V. SNK Playmore, on the other hand, is deep in development on King of Fighters XIV, with Samurai Shodown and possibly even a Garou: Mark of the Wolves sequel on the horizon, and one could attribute Ishizawa’s move as a way to continue his work in the genre.

According to a recent Facebook update, Ishizawa resigned from Capcom back in January, and it’s possible he’s already had a hand in King of Fighters XIV development. We’ll have more details on this news as they become available.

Big Changes Applied to Killer Instinct’s Ranked Leagues

In addition to receiving new characters and balance changes, Killer Instinct’s third season has retooled the online ranked leagues. Some may have already noticed that rankings have been reset, with everyone starting at the bottom again, but that’s just one part of the update. Killer Instinct community manager Rukari Austin and design director James “DJames” Goddard have put together a video to explain.

As we already mentioned, everyone is back to the first tier, but pro stars have been retained. Other changes include the option to requalify once a month, improved cheat detection with new penalties, league demotions for inactive players, changed promotion match requirements, and gold tier matches are now set to best 2 out of 3 matches.

Killer Instinct is now available on Xbox One and Windows 10.

Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- Supports Legacy Controllers

Reports have been flooding in all morning that Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- supports older peripherals, as made evident by the pre-order demo that recently dropped in Japan.

One of the major points of contention within the fighting game community as titles shift to modern platforms is legacy controller support. While purchasing new consoles can be an expensive endeavor, the total cost when having to grab an updated arcade stick as well has the potential to prohibit participation entirely.

Fortunately, a driver created by the fine folks at Lab Zero Games has made it easier than ever for developers to add this functionality to their releases. That said, not all developers utilize it correctly, often still requiring a DualShock 4 be connected for every legacy controller in use.

We can’t be sure if this development is a result of Lab Zero’s driver, but this is great news for everyone looking to jump into the next Guilty Gear Xrd release on PlayStation 4. Best of all, it’s just plug-and-play; pressing START at the title screen with a PlayStation 3 stick or pad will ensure the controller is capable of navigating menus.

Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- launches for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 on May 26 in Japan, June 7 in North America, and June 10 in Europe. The aforementioned demo will be available outside Japan on April 5.

Get the Most Out of Alex’s Tools in Street Fighter V

With all the new content being put out at the moment, it’s likely that you’ve already seen what Alex can do in Street Fighter V. However, all of that is useless if you haven’t yet grasped his basics.

To help players out, Sajam recently released a video exploring Alex as he appears in Street Fighter V. As with all of his breakdowns, this one covers the returning character’s normals, specials, V-Skill, V-Trigger, and basic gameplan.

Alex still has the ability to put his opponent in a back turned state, either from his fierce Flash Chop or his V-Trigger lariat, which allows him a some unique follow-ups (including a german suplex command throw) for more damage. More interesting are his V-Skill, which gives his next attack counter-hit properties (including Crush Counter), and a lariat V-Trigger that parries and can also be charged to become unblockable.
