Fan-made crossover “Famicom Fighters” brings 8-Bit NES Stars into the fighting game genre

It’s pretty rare that MUGEN (an open source 2D fighting game engine, made in 1999) results in full, unified, cohesive games worth noting — but the fan-made crossover Famicom Fighters is shaping up to be something special.

Currently in development with a surprisingly large team, Famicom Fighters re-imagines the world of 8-bit games with smoother animation and old school 2D game-play. It’ll probably be the only time you’ll see Star Man from NES Pro Wrestling use El Fuerte-like run mix-ups, and its definitely the only time you’ll see him body slam Thonolan from Taito’s Kick Master.

Thief Arthur, arcade stick support coming to SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy in September 20 patch

As previously reported, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy‘s first DLC character is Thief Arthur from Square Enix’s Million Arthur franchise. The character is a guest that’s part of an exchange that see’s the King of Fighters‘s Iori Yagami appear in Square Enix’s Million Arthur: Arcana Blood.

During the livestream of a recent tournament for SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy in Japan, SNK revealed that Thief Arthur would be available on September 20. This guest character comes as part of a big patch for the game that’s coming on the same day.

In addition to adding Thief Arthur, this upcoming patch adds an important feature – arcade stick support. Currently, item use in SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is mapped to the the right analog stick, meaning that arcade stick  users aren’t able to use them. The patch will provide an alternate method of using items for players using said arcade sticks.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is currently available for Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation.

Million Arthur: Arcana Blood is now available for pre-order on the PlayStation store in Japan

Following up on the news that Square-Enix and Examu’s Million Arthur: Arcana Blood was coming to PlayStation 4, digital pre-orders for the game have now gone live over in Japan.

The digital edition of the game can now be pre-ordered on the Japanese PlayStation Store for ¥7,538. Those who pre-order will get early access to the game, in addition to an extra character color and a PlayStation 4 theme. The arcade fighter, based on Square Enix’s Million Arthur mobile game franchise, first hit arcades last November before a home port for PlayStation 4 was announced a couple of weeks back.

Million Arthur: Arcana Blood hits PlayStation 4 in Japan on November 29. When it arrives, it will come with additional characters not in the arcade version, including the King of Fighters‘s Iori Yagami.

Vulcano Rosso has endured in popularity from his original Street Fighter EX2+ appearance because of his high octane play-style and wild character design. Now that he’s out in Fighting EX Layer, the question becomes: how does he translate to ARIKA’s new battle engine?

Quite well, it would seem. For both returning and new players, PNDK&M have put together an excellent primer for the rekka character, demonstrating his unique fireball parry, ideal Gougi decks, and more. You don’t have to be a SFEX pro to ride with Rosso, you just have to love locking opponents down — and posing like a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure character while doing it.

novriltataki’s Melty Blood basics video introduces a new era of the FGC to air-dashing fundamentals

Melty Blood is an anime fighting game series started in 2002. It is, at the time of this writing, 2018, and Melty Blood is still worth talking about.

Based off a visual novel, this game’s legendary meme of having tournaments in bathrooms and parking lots makes it easy to forget to the lesson it holds: the series that started developer French Bread on the track to FGC reverence did so against all odds, and purely because of how good it is. It doesn’t matter when, where, or how — Melty Blood players will always play this game, and have a blast doing so.

So, why? Why did Melty Blood survive when so many other indie fighters of the early 2000s didn’t?

For those unaware of how Under Night In-Birth‘s spiritual prequel plays, novriltataki has put together an excellent intro to educate new players on the Melty Blood basics. With an active community and a reputation that precedes itself, there’s never a bad time to learn this FGC mainstay.

Fantasy Strike now available for Linux, adds bug fixes and new stage, will be on exhibition at SoCal Regionals 2018

Sirlin Games’ in-development fantasy fighter jumps onto a new platform.

Fantasy Strike, Sirlin Games’ YOMI-based in-development indie fighter (currently available on Steam Early Access) has recently updated, covering some bug fixes, balance changes, as well as adding the new “Murkwood Marsh” stage, home to the fishy fighter Argagarg. PC players also have a new platform option, as the game is now available on Linux.

The game will be on exhibition at the upcoming SoCal Regionals 2018, offering casual stations for attendees to sample the title, as well as standard and team battle tournaments.

Dragon Ball FighterZ producer Tomoko Hiroki thanks the players for their support

Ahead of the upcoming Switch release, the producer offers some words of appreciation to the fans.

The producer of Dragon Ball FighterZ, Tomoko Hiroki, offers a brief video message of gratitude to the players that have shown their support for Dragon Ball FighterZ. She points out that the upcoming Switch version of the title — coming September 28th — was only made possible by the volume of requests from the fanbase to see the game on Nintendo’s portable platform.

She also encourages us to look forward to upcoming DLC on all platforms, but what that will be — aside from already-revealed Cooler — Bandai Namco is still keeping under wraps for now, so stay tuned!

DreamHack Montreal 2018 streaming live from Montreal, Quebec

The DreamHack tournament series returns to Montreal for a third time this weekend. Among the many esports events for the weekend are five fighting game events: Brawlhalla, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Street Fighter V, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

After three straight Premiere Events in Asia, the Capcom Pro Tour brings a Premier to North American shores. Players competing in the Street Fighter side include Bonchan, Momochi, Haitani, Itabashi Zangief, Mago, moke, Xiaohai, Oil King, GamerBee, Problem-X, Shakz, Akainu, NuckleDu, Justin Wong, Punk, Smug, Snake Eyez, NYChrisG, CJ Truth and Alex Myers, among others. On the Smash side of things are Hungrybox, HugS, La Luna, Larry Lurr, ANTi, MVD, ESAM, Elegant, CaptainZack, and more.

Four streams will be covering the event for the weekend. Street Fighter V and Brawlhalla (excluding top 8) will have dedicated streams on CapcomFighters and Brawlhalla, respectively. DreamHackSmash will cover SSBM pools and semis Saturday as well as finals for both Smash titles on Sunday, while DreamHackFighters will cover SSBWiiU pools and semis Saturday and DBFZ and Brawlhalla finals on Sunday.
