FUNKY FRESH BEATS FUNKY FRESH BEATS

Lethal League Blaze is nearly here! Team Reptile published a trailer today showcasing all of the announced characters in their updated designs alongside the title’s new gameplay mechanics. The trailer also nails down a release date for the PC version of the game, October 24, 2018.

For those with an ear for fresh electronic sounds, you might have noticed the trailer’s song has a familiar tone. Composer Hideki Naganuma, from Jet Set Radio fame, provided his mastery of music for the track, “Ain’t nothin’ like a funky beat”.

Lethal League Blaze will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in Spring 2019, so everyone will be able to join in on the fun. Its been just over a year since the game was first announced, luckily the wait won’t be much longer!

Master T shows the power of UMA in this Blade Strangers high-damage combo video

One of the bigger selling points of Blade Strangers is its juggle combo flexibility. The only thing standing in-between you and big damage is your willingness to experiment in training mode — a fact made easy thanks to its portability on the Switch and a fact made crystal clear in the hands of the brutal close-range martial artist Master T.

Master T’s damage output and pressure are some of the best in the game, thanks to his assortment of advantageous on block EX moves, divekicks, and more. That all of these tools also double as combo filler means that he can convert off of most stray hits. As demonstrated in the video above, even if you choose to penalize yourself with a repetition or two, Master T still hits like a truck and does so with style.

Final Showdown explores more combos and tech for Frieza, Piccolo, and Teen Gohan in Dragon Ball FighterZ

One of Dragon Ball FighterZ’‘s most prolific combo creators, Final Showdown, has returned with another set of videos. This new series of videos continues to focus on characters he’s spent a lot of time breaking down in previous videos, namely Piccolo, Teen Gohan, and Frieza.

On the latter, Final Showdown explores his bread-and-butter combos, attempting to figure out the maximum damage he can squeeze from them.

Speaking of big damage, this next combo does 90% damage with no help from other characters.

The final Frieza video features another big damage solo combo, featuring the use of his discs to links into supers. Additionally, it also shows off some things he can do with his discs.

Moving on to Piccolo, we know that Final Showdown has been obsessed with figuring out things he can do with his orbs post-patch. And this new video for him demonstrates a few more combos with them: ones that happen to have good corner carry.

In addition to this, he also demonstrates an interesting property with his grounded arm grab. After he lands it, for some reason, the game gives Piccolo an extra hard attack, allowing him to do two hard attacks in a chain.

Finally, we return to what seems to be Final Showdown’s favorite character, Teen Gohan. The combos in the video below are “scrapped” ideas that never really evolved into something useful, but still look interesting enough to show.

AtlasOne takes on the backlash of “Icons: Combat Arena” and how games must develop their own identity

The question of “At what point does inspiration become imitation?” is one that has plagued every creative medium, for much longer than anyone reading this has been alive. All art is influenced, born of the lived experiences and interests of its creators. That isn’t an excuse to simply re-brand other people’s ideas, though — and that’s exactly the pitfall that led to the notable backlash against Icons: Combat Arena.

There is sea of indie platform fighters to swim in right now, but none of them have received the outcry that Icons did. AtlasOne‘s most recent video examines what went wrong for the developers that seemed to have everything going for them, and what lessons other platform fighters can learn from Icons going forward.

Do you agree with AtlasOne‘s take? Is Icons: Combat Arena salvageable?

Capcom Pro Tour Japan Premier tournament set for September 22nd-23rd at Tokyo Game Show

The Capcom Pro Tour Japan Premier registration has closed and the list of players attending is frightening: It’s a who’s-who of Street Fighter top players from around the world, including Evo 2017 champion Tokido and TWFighter Major 2018 champion Sako, all gearing up for the ever exciting Tokyo Game Show.

Pool play is currently scheduled for Sept. 22nd (Saturday) 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM JST, with top 8 playing out on Sept. 23rd 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM. 1st through 7th place will receive money from a nearly $100,000 USD Prize Pool — a first in TGS’s history, thanks to Japan’s new pro gamer licenses.

Also worth noting is that anyone in attendance, player or spectator, will have the chance to meet Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono. Considering TGS is typically where new character announcements have been made in the past, it would be nice to see Ono take the stage.

Dead or Alive 6 will arrive on February 15, 2019; Ayane, Marie Rose, Honoka, & Bayman returning to the roster

At Sony’s PlayStation LineUp Tour stream in preparation for the 2018 Tokyo Game Show, Team NINJA showed off a new trailer for Dead or Alive 6.

The new trailer revealed some veterans who are returning to the new game: Ayane, Marie Rose, Honoka, and Bayman. Interestingly enough, both Ayane and Marie Rose were shown in story scenes during the trailer, which should finally give the latter the story she lacked in Dead or Alive 5. More importantly however, the trailer revealed the date when Dead or Alive 6 will be available. The latest installment of Team NINJA’s fighting game franchise goes on sale on February 15, 2019.

The trailer included a glimpse of a new dinosaur park stage that seemed to have some pretty detailed danger zones, as well as the previously mentioned peeks at the game’s story mode.

You can check these out at 58 minutes and 30 seconds into the replay of the Sony livestream below.

SNK announces Samurai Spirits for PlayStation 4

Since last week, SNK has been counting down to a new game announcement. It seems we now know what that that game is: Samurai Spirits is coming to PlayStation 4! For those who may not be familiar with it, Samurai Spirits is the Japanese name for Samurai Shodown. The new game was announced at Sony’s event, where they revealed their lineup for the 2018 Tokyo Game Show.

Details for the game are scarce, aside from the fact that it’s running on Unreal Engine 4, and is scheduled to arrive sometime next year. However, more should be revealed on the official site soon. It appears to be a remake of the original title, but with a new 3D engine and updated art style.

In the meantime, you can check out the trailer from the event stream, at the 1 hour and 3 second mark of the video below.

STL1119 pushes Anna’s combo possibilities in Tekken 7

Despite recently putting out a explosive multi-character combo video for Tekken 7‘s Season 2, famed combo maker STL1119 somehow found the time to also release content for new DLC character Anna Williams. It has only been a few days, and the juggles on display in his latest video are already high on execution and style:

By combing instant WS+3’s, clever ring positioning, and some truly unique extensions like SS+3, STL1119‘s already set a bar for this character that will be difficult to raise.
