Tekken 7 VR Won’t Include First-Person Fighting

With the “surprise” announcement that Tekken 7 would be heading to consoles, Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Katsuhiro Harada also teased that their flagship fighter will also take advantage of Sony’s PlayStation VR. While how it would utilize the virtual reality system was a little vague, WIRED’s recent interview with senior designer Michael Murray sheds some light on what this may entail.

Unfortunately for fans of Tekken 2’s secret first-person mode (pictured above), they won’t be incorporating the technology the same way in Tekken 7. “I think people think we’re going to incorporate VR into the main game itself, when we don’t currently see a way that that would enhance Tekken to a new level better than what it would be right now,” Murray explains.

What virtual reality will do for Tekken 7, however, is allow players to get up close and personal with their favorite fighters outside of regular gameplay. Finalized details are still scarce, but Murray describes a mode that highlights the Tekken team’s work on customization and animation as a possibility. He also reiterates that all of the newly-announced Fated Retribution content will be available on consoles.

Cooperation Cup to Host Largest Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Tournament Yet in January

January will see the return of legendary Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tournament Cooperation Cup, and the latest installment of this 5-on-5 event promises to be the biggest one yet.

The 14th Cooperation Cup will feature a record breaking 445 players split into 89 teams, meaning top 3rd Strike talent like MOV, Tominaga, Boss, Kokujin, Pierrot, Vanao, Rikimaru, KSK, and Nuki will have to face an even larger pool of players than last year’s record-breaking event.

And that’s not all. The annual Pre-Cooperation Cup tournament, which regularly features teams comprised of a single character, is also bigger than last year’s with 62 teams.

The 14th Cooperation Cup is scheduled for January 10. The full list of participants can be found below or on the official Google Doc.

Bid Farewell to Street Fighter V’s Beta with This Community Video Roundup

Street Fighter V’s third beta phase recently came to a close, and with its closing went our last bit of (planned) access to the game until its official release. The next several weeks will be long ones, so we wanted to send the game out with a sizable community roundup. Combos, option selects, opinions, and general goofiness can all be found below. We hope you enjoy it!

Let’s get things warmed up with a look at Hurtbox TV’s Zangief combo video. As with their previous Street Fighter V combo videos, this footage offers viewers a good idea of the sort of combo potential the the wrestler brings to the game.

Hurtbox wasn’t alone in creating Zangief combo videos. Combo and tech mastermind Desk took a stab at demonstrating some destruction as well, the results of which you can see below.

Combos aside, Desk also discovered a handful of option selects that allow the Red Cyclone to connect a buffered Critical Art under certain circumstances. As you’ll see, it works off more than just one button, so Gief looks to be an intimidating force at plenty of ranges.

However, he’s not unstoppable! As Desk demonstrates in this next video, even the wrestler’s twirling V-Trigger (with vacuum action!) can be fully parried by Ryu players with the guts to try.

In this next video, UltraDavid shows “Zangief Doin Crazy Crap,” which you’ll soon see is an apt title for the footage. On top of being able to combo his EX SPD, Zangief can use it to cover his approach against certain options, including dragon punches. While it can likely still be refined even more, this setup offers a timing that should keep opponents grounded on their wakeup.

Anyone who has watched UltraDavid break apart new games knows that he loves option selects. In these next two videos, he shows off some interesting discoveries that allow characters to throw specific moves in the event that their opponent enters the Crush Counter state and use others if they don’t. Chances are this will be important for everyone to pick up, so start planning your own options today!

If you’ve spent some time with Necalli, you’ll certainly have noticed that his combo options outside of V-Trigger leave much to be desired. As LPN demonstrates below, that all melts away once Necalli trades in his dreads and goes full-on Goku.

This next segment contains no video footage, but in the audio provided, Bafael discusses his thoughts on the state of Street Fighter V. He talks about his views on the power of blockstrings, where he feels walk up throws fit into the game, and plenty more. If you’re looking to learn some of the ways that the game differs from the current generation of Street Fighter, this short talk is a great place to start.

Okay, enough with the serious stuff. Not everyone who spent some hours with the beta this weekend did so discovering new technology. Some people just loaded up the game and had a great time.

Rashid will certainly cause plenty of headaches once people figure him out, but in this video, Lamerboi seems to have already done a good job of just that.

And lastly, here’s a devastating look at what happened to Big Cheese when he was working on a combo and the game servers went down. You will be missed, combo that almost was.

Daigo Umehara Donates Capcom Cup Winnings to Evo Scholarship Fund

Daigo Umehara is a lot of things.

A legend in his own right, the Mad Catz competitor has spent decades highlighting the upper echelons of fighting game competition, and is one of the few players in our community who can truly be called a professional gamer because of it. You ask anyone with an interest in video games to name the best Street Fighter in the world, and nine times out of ten their first answer will be, “Daigo.”

As a celebrity, Daigo’s renown has grown thanks to high-profile television appearances and interviews, and he even has a manga series based on his life. He receives recognition in the gaming world normally reserved for StarCraft or League of Legends players, but has managed to remain humble during his lifelong journey to the top.

But, above all else, Daigo is our community’s truest embodiment of Street Fighter protagonist Ryu. Calm, collected, and just a little dangerous, his meticulous play and tendency to gamble on uppercuts that have no reason to hit (but typically do) has graced the shores of numerous countries across the globe, leaving battered opponents and awestruck onlookers in its wake.

Legend, celebrity, world warrior; Daigo is truly all of these things. And now, we can add one more onto the list: philanthropist. Shoryuken recently received an email from the Japanese competitor detailing a desire to donate his Capcom Cup winnings to the Evo scholarship.

I would like to donate all my prize winnings from the Capcom Pro-Tour Finals to the community. It’s simply because I would not have existed without community and I owe you. My “professional” gamer life has given me such invaluable experiences. I get to give all myself to fight against top players around the world and meet and engage with fans across the globe. I can express myself through my gameplay to the audience, the community. Just as you need an opponent in fighting game, the community is equally important to me.

My pro-gaming life started with SFIV. The CPT Finals were to conclude one chapter of my life. I worked hard everyday. I grew a lot. I had so much fun in the process over the year. I felt fulfilled. Being content, I came to the finals. I was thinking that if I had had won any prizes, I would want to give it back to the community, which has supported me all these times. Not only was I able to win the prize, I was able to play my game and express myself. I had great matches, and I had a great fun.

I sincerely hope the money I donate will help the community thrive further. The stronger the community grows, the further my career expands, doesn’t it? That is not so bad. At least, it would be a much wiser and prudent investment than an Ume-Shoryu?!

I cannot express my gratitude to the community. But I would like to say that I’m looking forward to seeing you next year again. Hope you all have happy holidays.

Daigo Umehara

For those unfamiliar with this program, here’s a quick breakdown: the Evo scholarship began in 2012 as a way to help members of the community pursue an education in game development at the New York University Game Center, located in Tisch School of the Arts. Though it was created by the Evo organizers themselves, spectators directly contribute to the fund every year by subscribing to the official tournament broadcast. It’s most recent recipient was longtime competitor and commentator skisonic.

Thanks to Daigo’s generosity, the scholarship will have an extra $60,000 (give or take) to work with. In order to accommodate the influx of applications they will likely receive from this news, the NYU Game Center has decided to extend their deadline to January 15. A full statement can be found below.

The NYU Game Center is honored to continue support the fighting game community by offering opportunities to study game design at New York University.

This generous donation demonstrates Daigo’s spirit. It indicates that the qualities that make him such a great competitor extend far beyond the game. His donation also demonstrates the capacity that competitive games have to bring out the best in people. Even though these are games of intense competition and stylized conflict, they create a context to demonstrate the very best qualities of character. This is an irony that might not be obvious to those outside of fighting games looking in; having a heart big enough to donate all of his winnings is actually an indication of what it takes to win in the first place.

This complicated richness of fighting games is one reason why the NYU Game Center is so proud to be a part of the community, and also why we feel the scholarship is so important. On an individual level, the goal of the scholarship is to help members of the FGC channel their passion and mastery into avenues beyond just becoming a professional player. For some, competitive games will be a lifelong pastime, for a few, playing professional games can be a career, for others, perhaps with the help of the Evo Scholarship, they are a path to a profession that builds off the skills and qualities developed to master the game.

In addition to the life-changing possibility on an individual level, we believe the Evo Scholarship will foster the long-term health of competitive games as a whole. By enabling individuals from within the community to be leading the charge, competitive games will continue to evolve and become an even richer field of games.

Recognizing that Daigo’s donation now makes school a possibility for many more people, applications to join the fall 2016 class have been extended to January 15th. For more information about the program visit: http://gamecenter.nyu.edu/evo/ We’re also happy to answer any questions at: gamecenter@nyu.edu

The Evo Scholarship is entirely funded by the generosity of the fighting game community. If you would like to make a contribution of any size to the Evo Scholarship, you can make tax-deductible donation online here: https://www.nyu.edu/giving/give-now/?id=1000229

NYU Game Center

And last but certainly not least, here’s a quick statement from Evo themselves.

The Evo team is thankful to have Daigo as part of this community, and without him we wouldn’t be where we are today in the FGC.  We look forward to watching his success in the years to come!

We here at Shoryuken are blown away by Daigo’s selflessness, and we can’t wait to see what the eventual winner (or winners) does with this extraordinary boost in funds during their time at the NYU Game Center.

Combo Breaker Returns with Sophomore Effort in May

Last year, Combo Breaker arrived in the American Midwest to fill the gap of Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament’s departure. Organized by Rick Thiher and a team comprised of many of the people that made UFGT special, Combo Breaker quickly established itself as one of the United States’ premier destinations for fighting game competition.

And they’re set to do it all over again next year.

This weekend, Combo Breaker launched their official website, dropping immense amounts of information concerning the upcoming tournament. While the twenty-game lineup and new venue are certainly points to be excited about, they will also be going above and beyond to make visitors to Illinois comfortable with free shuttles from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

Of course, you can also expect special exhibitions, an extensive arcade, and more if you aren’t about competition.

Combo Breaker 2016 is scheduled for May 27-29. For more details, be sure to check out the tournament’s website here. Registration is now open, so take advantage of that early bird discount if you plan to attend.

Xian Demonstrates a Parry Option Select for Ryu in Street Fighter V’s Beta

Ever since Ryu’s Mind’s Eye V-Skill in Street Fighter V was shown to be a parry, more than a few veteran players wondered if this would allow for parry based option selects similar to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, and, well, it seems that prediction has come to pass.

In a recent tweet, Razer’s Xian shared a way in which Ryu can use his V-Skill to set up an option select between a parry, a throw tech, and just plain old blocking.  The technique is done by holding back (or down back) and pressing the input for the throw tech almost immediately after activating the V-Skill, similar to how players would plink normals in Street Fighter IV.

As Xian demonstrates in his tweet below, this option select allows Ryu to deal with both a poke and a throw attempt with a single motion. More importantly, a successful parry allows Ryu to punish with a Shoryuken and, even though it’s not shown below, cancel that into his super, similar to certain option selects in 3rd Strike.

This is obviously not a perfect option and may not even make it into the final game, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on if you plan to take Street Fighter V seriously. Let us know what you think in the comments.
