Upcoming Street Fighter V Beta Open to All PlayStation Plus Subscribers in Japan

With a small stress test behind us and the final beta coming this weekend, Street Fighter V fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to try the game one last time before its launch early next year. Fortunately, folks in Japan will have a much easier time jumping into this upcoming testing phase thanks to the removal of many entry barriers.

The only thing Japanese players will need to play Street Fighter V during the next beta phase is an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Before, entries were chosen by lottery, making it much harder to get in when compared to the simple pre-order methods in other regions. Everyone who took part in the previous betas will also receive four invitations to send to PlayStation Network friends.

We’re currently uncertain if this will extend to areas outside of Japan, but we’ll be sure to update this article if we hear back from Capcom themselves on the matter.

Street Fighter V is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4 and PC on February 16. The next beta will be open on both systems December 18-20.

Keoma, Snake Eyez, Infiltration and More Discuss the Most Hype Moments of Capcom Pro Tour 2015

This year’s Capcom Pro Tour painted the planet with hype. Hopping from country to country, this series of tournaments not only provided viewers with top-notch footage on a near weekly basis, but it also worked to unify the global fighting game community. With so many events throughout the year, deciding on a single moment to act as a crystallization of the whole tour is, obviously, no simple task.

With this in mind, Capcom’s Matt Edwards spoke with the folks behind the sticks, including Keoma Pacheco, Red Bull’s Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis, and Razer’s Seon-woo “Infiltration” Lee, to get their opinion on the best moments of the year. But Pro Tour participants aren’t the only ones to share their thoughts, as Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez, Logan Sama, and David “UltraDavid” Graham also weigh in on the discussion.

Did your favorite moment make the cut? Let us know in the comments.

Tekken 7 Fated Retribution’s Gorgeous Visuals, Default Costumes Highlighted in Latest Screenshots

While the biggest takeaway from this weekend’s Tekken 7 Fated Retribution announcement was definitely the guest appearance by Street Fighter’s Akuma, the fact that a game as beautiful as Bandai Namco Entertainment’s latest fighter was receiving another layer of polish wasn’t lost on us.

Fortunately, the developers have shared a slew of new screenshots that highlight the level of work they’ve put into updating this title. You’ll find two separate galleries below–one for characters, one for stages–that perfectly detail the visual changes being made in this upcoming game.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about those spiffy new duds sported by Asuka, Bryan, Dragunov, Feng, King, Leo, Lili, and Xiaoyu, producer Katsuhiro Harada mentioned that they represent each character’s new default outfit.

Dish Out Serious Damage with Karin in Street Fighter V

If you’re looking to prepare yourself for the upcoming Street Fighter V beta, TeaMandem’s video series is a great place to start. They’ve already covered combo and tech options for Nash, Cammy, and R. Mika. Most importantly, their videos favor practical technology as opposed to the stuff that will only come up once in a first-to-fifty set, assuming you actually, you know, play a first-to-fifty set.

Their most recent offering provides a smattering of options for Karin. On top of showing players how to dish out serious damage as the heiress, TeaMandem also discusses her approach to mixups through the use of V-Trigger.

Street Fighter V Reportedly Employs 3rd Strike-Style Normal Priority System

As we get to play more of Street Fighter V through stress tests and beta phases, we’re starting to learn more and more about how it plays, at least in early builds. The latest discovery, however, may be one of the most important yet. In a new video, periodikoSF demonstrates what appears to be a normal priority system a la Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

For those who may not be familiar, 3rd Strike’s priority system governs trades. The basic rule is that stronger normals always beat weaker ones, special moves beat light and medium attacks but trade with heavy ones, and supers beat special moves.

In Street Fighter V, the game apparently applies this priority system to normal attacks, but specials will still trade with normals. Anti-airs aren’t part of the equation either.

While already important in Street Fighter V, this discovery places extra priority on learning frame traps, both from an offensive and defensive position, and mashing jab to escape pressure is now much less useful than it was in earlier titles. Also, the slower Crush Counter moves now have greater importance in situations where they trade with weaker normals, so get those counter combos in order!

Street Fighter V is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 4 and PC on February 16.

Bandai Namco Announces Tekken 7 Fated Retribution, Starring Street Fighter’s Akuma

At the end of The King Of Iron Fist global Tekken 7 Tournament, Bandai Namco had a little surprise. A new trailer shows Kazumi pleading to a mysterious figure to stop her husband Heihachi if she is unable to do so herself. While you might be familiar with this scene in previous trailers for Tekken 7, this new trailer reveals the mysterious character to be Akuma of the Street Fighter series, starring in the update to Tekken 7 subtitled Fated Retribution.

The trailer shows off Akuma doing all his classic moves, Goshoryukens and Gohadokens included. If you ever imagined seeing a Raging Demon in Tekken, well, your wish is coming true. The update also features a number of graphical improvements in addition to new content.

While Tekken X Street Fighter might not pan out into a game of its own per se, it looks like Bandai Namco is incorporating the Street Fighter series into the very story of Tekken. This won’t be the end of the Street Fighter invasion, so look for more reveals in the future.

Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Shares His Stance on Post-Launch Patches, Balancing

In the latest installment of his regular Famitsu column, Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai tackles a question that deals with topic of updates and patches, specifically those released after a game has already launched.

Starting out, Sakurai asks the sender to not view him solely as a creator but also “a player that understands the situation comprehensively.” He admits that, in a perfect world, development on each title would complete before launch, but the complex work behind our favorite games makes that nearly impossible.

“It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say [modern games] are 100 times—no, 1,000 times more complicated than games of the past,” Sakurai explains. “And this massive amount of data is subject to the variance and fluctuation that digital information is susceptible to. Making sure that everything works properly is a miracle in and of itself.”

With regards to game balance, Sakurai says they try not to “blindly accept feedback” from fans on the internet in order to maintain a balance between competitive viability and casual enjoyment. “We could balance our game based on what high-level players say, but if that meant beginner-level players would no longer be able to play, that wouldn’t be an acceptable outcome,” he concludes.
