Blade Strangers Video Roundup — Optimals, 100% Heat Up Combos, Frame Data, and More!

Nicalis’s odd crossover fighter Blade Strangers is out! Maybe they advertised it as a simple little game, but once the FGC sunk their claws into its engine, all bets were off — let’s take a look at what the community has done in its first day of dissection:

As long as you have a bar of meter in this game, any character should be able to convert into heavy damage. Here’s a Liongate conversion off light attacks that goes well into 4.4K — and requires just a bit of finesse to keep it interesting.

Even characters geared more clearly towards zoning, such as Isaac, are able to score some decent damage in this game — and setup their projectile lock-down in the process. Check out the okizeme example from @SchoolboyF_:

This 100% combo with Kawase shows pretty much every situation you need to eek out the most damage possible in this game: Counterhit, full charged 6H, execution, meter, and lowest-health-in-the-game Gunvolt. Most of this was understood prior to release — the Heat Up activation mid-combo,however, is relatively new tech.

…and it looks like we’re gonna see it a lot in the highest damage combos of Blade Strangers.

We mentioned earlier that Gunvolt has the lowest health in the game. LegendaryWolf Shirou would like to show you why that is.

Lastly, If you are someone that needs frame data for a new game ASAP, the Blade Strangers Discord is already hard at work completing a resource for the whole cast, which can be read here. It even includes health totals, which appear to average at around 10.5k.

Frame Advantage analyzes the tournament viability of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition’s G

Tyrant and PackZ are back with the latest episode of Frame Advantage, and today they are breaking down the toolkit of President of the World: G.

Now that the character has been out for two weeks, the British pros feel they have a handle on what G is about — and it certainly seems like he’s about anything he wants to be. Drawing parallels to when Abigail was first introduced, G is a well-rounded powerhouse that breaks the rules of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition with his multiple air options, anti-cross up tools, and more. If you’re looking for political power in the tournament scene, G is a good place to start!

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tutorial — Alex bread-and-butter combo guide & general notes

In light of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection‘s release, I’ve been bombarded with requests to do some Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike character tutorials. It warms my heart to think that people want to learn my favorite title in the franchise even twenty years down the line, so I’m only happy to oblige. I’ve done Ryu and Ken so far, and my latest video now covers Alex, the stated protagonist of 3rd Strike. Alex has a very unusual and versatile toolset, with high damage, high dizzy output, and a rushdown/mix-up playstyle representing Street Fighter III’s gameplay shift on the whole. Alex is a very popular character despite middling tournament success over the lifespan of the game. He’s built around making reads, pursuing aggressive parries, and capitalizing on momentum. He’s also simple and easy to pick up, which I think makes him a decent entry point to the SFIII series.

Latest Street Fighter V update adds new costumes, adjusts Sagat and Kolin, and replaces lost LP for some players

The new patch included some bug fixes that change two members of the roster.

In addition to adding new Professional premium costumes for Kolin, Falke, Menat, and R. Mika, and a new Fighting Chance classic costume for Balrog, the version 03.070 patch for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (that rolled out yesterday evening) also threw in some bug fixes for Kolin and Sagat, as well as changing the invincibility properties on Sagat’s medium Tiger Uppercut. League Points have also been restored to some players that may have had connection/login issues during recent weeks. Capcom’s patch notes are below.

The following new content/DLC is now available.

• Additional Content
— Additional Costume (Professional 2): R. Mika
— Additional Costume (Professional): Menat
— Additional Costume (Professional): Kolin
— Additional Costume (Professional): Falke

• Fighting Chance
— Get Balrog’s “Mike-like” Additional Costume through “Lookalike” now underway in Fighting Chance.

• Battle Related Bug Fixes
— Sagat 
If input at the timing where the preceding input is being recognized, by inputting a backwards dash and a throw, Sagat would perform a throw after finishing his backwards dash. This bug has been fixed.

Active frames 3F – 7F of M Tiger Uppercut had complete invincibility. This has been fixed so that M Tiger Uppercut only has attack and projectile invincibility from active frames 3F – 7F.

— Kolin
During her V-Trigger II Absolute Zero, when performing a neutral jump from her forward dash, for 3F during the transition to her jump animation she would lose her collision box. This bug has been fixed.

• Other
We have restored any LP that was lost during disconnects due to login issues that occurred on August 15th 18th and August 21st.

Shovel Knight Showdown brings multiplayer fighting to the retro-styled classic

Despite finding itself in the platforming genre, the indie hit Shovel Knight has a lot of publicity in the sphere of fighting games — the game’s eponymous protagonist has been included in several recent fighters, even landing a role as an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Shovel Knight’s latest roster position, though, is not as a guest.

Yacht Club has teased the idea of a “versus mode” for Shovel Knight ever since the 2013 Kickstarter, and after 5 years of updates, DLC content, and even amiibo figures, clashing shovels will finally be possible through Shovel Knight Showdown. There’s no release date as of now, but Yacht Club has graciously opened their floodgates of preview content, showing off a plethora of screenshots:

Yacht Club has also noted that an early demo will be available to attendees of gaming event PAX West.

With gameplay and visuals following tightly alongside its original release, Shovel Knight Showdown could potentially be considered a fresh take on the fighting genre as a whole, holding an emphasis to the “platform” in platform fighter. Showdown will be featured as a free addition to the all-in-one title Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, as well as a standalone game for $9.99.

Balrog gets a new (but classic) costume in Street Fighter V’s Fighting Chance, based on Street Fighter’s Mike

Another Heavenly King connects to his roots.

Following in same theme as Sagat’s pre-Shoryuken costume, Street Fighter V‘s Fighting Chance mode is now tempting Balrog mains with the Mike-Like costume, a tribute to the original Street Fighter pugilist that served as a prototype/inspiration for one of Street Fighter II‘s Four Kings.

Mike fans that want to add this costume to Balrog’s wardrobe will need to buy Fortune Tickets in SFV’s lootbox-ish Fighting Chance minigame; the first try is free, but additional shots to get the costume (amidst the other items that the mode provides) will take some Fight Money off your hands.

This costume replaces the Cannon Spike outfit for Cammy in Fighting Chance, while Sagat’s Street Fighter costume is still available. Although the announcement lists the costume as “available in Fighting Chance until 9/24”, the Fighting Chance reading 10-pack for this outfit is listed as being available until October 14 in-game.

Cooler gets into the action in this new Dragon Ball FighterZ trailer

Frieza’s brother demonstrates that revenge is best served cold.

At Evo 2018, Bandai Namco Games and Arc System Works revealed that Cooler would be coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ. Now, they’ve dropped another trailer showing even more of Cooler in action.

Beyond just showing some gameplay clips, the video below actually shows an actual match between a couple of appropriately-themed teams. Cooler is joined by Frieza and Ginyu, while facing off a team with Goku, Vegeta, and teen Gohan. While it’s hard to quantify the level of play in the match — the match seems to played in a way as set up a Cooler vs. Goku showdown — it does show us a glimpse of what may be in store for Dragon Ball FighterZ players in the future.

World Warrior FGC’s “Git Gud Series” breaks down micro-steps in Street Fighter V

If there’s a combo you’re struggling with in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition that always seems just out of reach, the odds are good that you need to micro-step. Due to the push out on hit in SFV — and, worth noting, many other fighters — combos may not work quite the same way in every situation.
