Shine 2018 results

The Smash events just keep on coming, folks. Following large showings at Evo 2018, Super Smash Con 2018, and Heir 5, this past weekend played host to Shine 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. With a massive 904 players for Super Smash Bros. Melee (which had Singles, Doubles, and Crew Battle events), 472 entrants for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (which also featured Singles, Doubles and Crews), as well as 86 fighters for Smash 64, it was quite the colossal gathering. Not to be outdone though, there were also events for Rivals of Aether, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition.

“Speedyfists” fighting game speed-run charity event takes place on September 7th-9th

Since we at SRK are usually focused on the versus side of fighting games, we rarely get to see, or discuss, the skill behind single-player modes. If the world of speed running — completing a single player mode as fast as possible — is new to you, then you’ll want to check out the third iteration of the”Speedfists” charity event, happening September 7th-9th.

This three-day fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital plans to cover a staggering list of fighting games, which can be found here. And they aren’t just arcade mode runs — there’s a wide variety of challenges, and even some interesting glitch exhibitions, such as a Street Fighter II: The World Warrior Guile glitch showcase.

This unique event will be streamed from Speedyfists’s Twitch channel.

Kefla and Super Baby 2 arrive in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2’s Extra Pack 3 release trailer

After revealing Kefla and Super Baby 2 as the next pair of DLC characters for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Bandai Namco Entertainment has released the launch trailer for the game’s next update: DLC Extra Pack 3, which is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch.

In addition to the two new Z-Fighters, this update adds more costume options for custom characters, including an Ultra Instinct Goku Wig, a Janemba Suit, and an Arabian Costume, with the promise of even more special costumes coming soon. There are also 5 new Parallel Quests, 8 new Skills, and 2 additional Super Souls. Free updates are also ongoing, which will provide us with a Swimsuit Costume for Towa, 40 new Figurines, 20 Quests, 21 Character Skills, an additional Scenario, 20 Posing Skills, and additional NPCs for the Hero Colosseum, and additional costumes and accessories. There have also been over 100 adjustments made to Skills for the sake of overall game balance, as well as netcode improvements to ensure an even smother online experience. You can now even select additional custom warriors from the character select screen, and more online events have also been promised for the future. You can see the full trailer below.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2‘s Extra Pack 3 is currently available, and should set you back the usual price of $9.99.

Equinox Gaming signs Tekken 7 powerhouse JoeyFury

Since before Tekken 7 was officially out on consoles, JoeyFury was traveling the country placing consistently in Namco’s first tournaments. Joseph “JoeyFury” Bennett has kept his reputation as a top talent in tact since then, boasting wins across JDCR, Dimeback, and others along the way.

It just makes sense, then, that the esports organization Equinox Gaming made the call to sign Joey to their team.

Here’s 10 minutes of Dead or Alive 6 at Gamescom 2018 from IGN

Team NINJA brought a new build of Dead or Alive 6 to Gamescom 2018 in Cologne last week. The build brought with it Hitomi, Leifang, a new stage, as well as a number of tweaks and changes compared to the previous builds at Evo and E3.

IGN has previously already showcased video of the game, featuring producer Yohei Shimbori showing off the newly-revealed characters. Now, however, they’re back with more video — 10 minutes of it, to be precise — just showing off matches and nothing else.

Aside from showing off matches with Hitomi and Leifang, the video below also has some of the other known cast members, including Hayabusa, Hayate, Jann Lee, and newcomer Diego. Of course, we also see a lot of the new “Forbidden Fortune” stage, showing off how its transition works, and how some of the elements in the stage can be used by players for more damage or setups.

Dead or Alive 6 arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2019.

It has been quite the pre-release journey for Nicalis’s latest fighter, hasn’t it? Announced to little fanfare over a year ago, the Studio Saizensen-developed cross-over fighter Blade Strangers built up momentum with surprising character reveals, smart location testing, and a creative, free-form juggle system. The future of the SoulCalibur franchise depends on SoulCalibur VI’s success

The sales of this sixth entry could make or break the tale of souls and swords.

When SoulCalibur VI was announced at the Game Awards last December, it had been over 5 years since the previous game had been released. During that time, there was a lot of uncertainty about the series’ future — at least until this new game was announced.

Now, in an interview with DualShockers at Gamescom 2018, producer Motohiro Okubo explains that the series still isn’t exactly out of the woods yet. SoulCalibur VI itself almost didn’t happen, as Bandai Namco had low expectations for the franchise at that point, and it took a lot of convincing for him to actually be given the green light to do it.

More importantly, Okubo confirms that the future of the franchise could depend on the success of the game. When asked about whether SouCalibur VI could be the last SoulCalibur game if it didn’t sell well, Okubo stated “Yeah, that’s right,” he continues by stating, “We don’t want to blackmail the users by saying that it could be the last one, but as it is, yes.”

With this, Okubo has made it pretty clear now how much the fate of the franchise rests on this latest entry. Will this be the final tale of souls and swords, or will the series once again rise to prominence? We’ll find out when SouCalibur VI launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 19th.

Street Fighter V servers down for maintenance today, adding new Professional premium costumes

Online functions will be down for a while as they get ready to open the maid café.

Back to the regular Tuesday schedule after G’s and Sagat’s release, Street Fighter V servers are going offline today during 11:00 AM PT and 5:00 PM PT for maintenance:

At least part of today’s maintenance is the release of the new batch of “Professional” premium costumes, this time offering the outfits Falke, Kolin, Menat, and R. Mika would slip into if they were spending the day providing service at a maid café:

Players that have picked up G and Sagat will want to keep an eye out for possible balancing changes for the new fighters as well — Capcom has already indicated their intention to adjust Sagat’s uppercut properties.

Alberta’s toughest competitors were joined by contenders from British Columbia and even some from Eastern Canada for Alberta Beat Down 2018. While hosted in Edmonton, it was the traveling fighters that took the top spots in the competition this year.
