Alpharad Protects Dreamland in Latest Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Video

Back in early June, Alpharad, perhaps best known for his comedic approach to disrespecting opponents in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, decided to take a break from producing the How to Play 101 series. This break, which looked as though it could have been a permanent stepping away from Smash-related content, seems to have come to an end earlier this month when he uploaded a How to Play dedicated to Lucas.

And he didn’t stop there. Today, he brings us a highlight reel with Dreamland’s resident pink puff positively destroying the competition in For Glory mode. If you’ve had the pleasure of checking out Alpharad’s work in the past, you’ll likely have a pretty good idea of what to expect in this most recent reel.

So sit back, relax, and get ready for some of the most ridiculous and unnecessary kill tactics that Kirby has to offer.

Street Fighter V Beta Client Updated on PlayStation 4

After Street Fighter V’s ill-fated beta last month, Capcom announced that they were rescheduling to a later date to give them time to address certain issues. While the company has yet to make a formal announcement on when the beta will be coming back, a recent development shows that it might be sooner rather than later.

A new update has been pushed out to the Street Fighter V beta client on PlayStation 4. Clocking in at just over 1 GB, it promises an improved log-in process and optimized matchmaking logic.

Please take note that access to the beta is still locked at this point. However, this new update seems to indicate that Capcom might have some news for us in the near future. Stay tuned for more details.

Rising Thunder Devs Explain Their Matchmaking System

As folks have continued to throw down in the Rising Thunder alpha, many have been curious as to how its matchmaking system works. In a game so dependent on online play, these systems are an important part to a player’s overall enjoyment of their time with it, so the developers recently provided an in-depth look at how they are pairing you with opponents.

Rising Thunder has two built-in programs running the show. The first, ranking tiers, are basically a tally of your win/loss ratio. As you score more victories, your tier placement rises; lose too many and you drop. Simple enough, right? Ranking tiers are also the only judge of skill made visible by the developers, as they are mostly meant to be “easy to understand and fun.”

Skill ratings, however, are where the real matchmaking begins. Much like the Elo rating systems employed by games like chess, League of Legends, and Magic: The Gathering, Rising Thunder uses a complex algorithm behind the scenes to produce a more accurate representation of a player’s skill.

While not shared with competitors themselves, these skill ratings combine with player locations and time spent in queue to determine who they are matched up with. “Basically the matchmaker juggles all these factors and tries to make the best match possible,” the developer post explains. “One of our jobs in the Alpha is to refine the matchmaking algorithms to get you more competitive matches that also feel awesome online.”

To provide an example of how this could change, an experiment was run to see what would happen if the matchmaker used both ranking tiers and skill ratings to find opponents. Though it still looked for matches in skill ratings, it also placed a preference on players within the same ranking tiers. Unfortunately, this increased waiting times online, and so they rolled the process back to its original build.

For more details on how they measure the “fairness” of this matchmaking system, be sure to check out the original post.

Kim Wu Confirmed for Killer Instinct Season Three

After dropping early hints and trailer teasers, the folks behind Killer Instinct have officially confirmed that Kim Wu will be playable in the title’s upcoming third season. This news comes courtesy of the forums, which recently saw the veteran receive her very own sub-forum.

For those out of the loop, Kim Wu was originally introduced in Killer Instinct 2. A descendant of the warriors who defeated series antagonists Eyedol and Gargos, she acts as the guardian of her people, wielding nunchaku in battle against the forces of evil.

At this time, there’s no indication of how her design will change in the transition to Xbox One (apart from the brief glimpse of her weapon in the aforementioned teaser), and the developers are looking for feedback from the community concerning their thoughts on the matter. Be sure to follow the link below to share your opinion.

Killer Instinct season three is set to launch in March 2016. Apart from Kim Wu, Battletoads protagonist Rash will be joining the playable cast as a guest character, and is currently undergoing beta testing.
