Erron Black Has Some Choice Words for Predator in Mortal Kombat X

(Editor’s note: Please note that graphic content and NSFW language follow in the article below.)

While the Mortal Kombat universe is as rich and varied as you’d expect from a franchise spanning 20 years, the addition of guest characters has given the developers even more to work with in terms of fanservice and Easter eggs.

Mortal Kombat X’s first post-launch character, Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees, continued this tradition with some brutal machete action and nods to his unstoppable nature in the film series he was pulled from, and NetherRealm Studios is set to do the same with their next release, Predator.

Yesterday, this upcoming character was unveiled by way of the game’s Tower mode, allowing players their first opportunity to see what this alien hunter had up its sleeves (or bladed wrist gauntlet). Equipped with all the technology you’d expect from the species, Predator incorporates a number of weapons and battle techniques we’ve seen in movies and comic books throughout the years, but one homage in particular involves a completely different character.

For those out of the loop, Mortal Kombat X includes moves called X-Rays. Originally introduced in 2011’s Mortal Kombat, these moves, in the most simplest of terms, function like supers in other titles, essentially giving characters access to a high-damage attack once the requisite meter has been acquired.

Though every X-Ray is graphically impressive (as well as impressively graphic), Mortal Kombat X newcomer Erron Black’s manages to stand apart thanks to the way it changes based on who he is fighting. The dusty cowboy loads up his trusty revolver and fires off a single shot, revealing that the opponent’s name is scratched into the bullet before it enters their body and ricochets through their skeleton. In the case of Predator, however, the developers used this opportunity to point towards one of the original film’s most famous lines.

Catch that? The younger readers out there may not understand the reference, but Dutch (the character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the first Predator film) refers to the alien as “one ugly motherfucker” when he first catches a glimpse of what’s under those imposing masks.

While there’s no doubt that NetherRealm Studios loves to whet their fans’ appetites with constant callbacks to other aspects of the Mortal Kombat universe, it’s great to see them do the same with the guest characters that also inhabit their games. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

El Fuerte Can Still Get Pretty Crazy in Street Fighter IV

If there’s anything I’ve learned throughout my many years in the fighting game community, it’s that the most dedicated players in the scene will continually find new ways to impress you. Even with a character as off-the-wall (sometimes quite literally) as Street Fighter IV’s El Fuerte, folks are still coming up with some insane content.

For a good look at where the character currently stands among his most adamant fanbase, Mexican competitor GordoRlz has released a brand new compilation video demonstrating his latest shenanigans. You may remember Gordo from a previous article that highlighted his ability to perform Desk-like execution on a pad, and this time around he’s got over three minutes of brand new footage to shock and amaze.

In the exhibition below, Gordo runs the gamut of Fuerte’s high-level abilities, taking the time to show off extensive run-stop-fierce loops, resets, and more. Fortunately, it’s not all combos; the video also does its part to explore the mindgames this character is capable of once you’ve whittle away your opponent’s stamina.

Give the video some of your attention and let us know what you think.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round’s PC Netplay Patch Sees Indefinite Delay

DOA5LR_Nyotengu_vs_Marie_Rose_crop

Team NINJA has announced that they will be delaying the release of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round’s netplay patch on PC, citing “major issues” discovered in the ongoing beta test. The title was originally scheduled to receive online play at the end of June.

While details weren’t provided as to what these problems are, a cursory glance of the game’s Steam community finds numerous claims of frequent crashes despite the netcode itself being serviceable.

Players who want to keep utilizing the beta to play online can continue to do so, but those who are unable to access the testing version due to its inherent issues will need to opt out and return their game to normal.

At this point in time, Team NINJA cannot offer a new release date for this patch, but promises to keep fans up to date as progress is made.

Dezmu Demonstrates Uses for Mega Man’s Rush Coil, New Ryu Infinite in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Prolific Super Smash Bros. content creator Dezmu has been quite busy as of late, sharing a couple of videos demonstrating tricks for the two Capcom guest characters in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

The first of these is a tutorial on how to use Mega Man’s faithful pet dog Rush to set up a kill. Normally, Rush Coil disappears once Mega Man jumps off the spring, but apparently there’s a way to cancel the move to keep summoning the robotic canine as soon as it ends. Using this technique, Mega Man players can set him up so that he can easily knock respawning characters off-stage.

The second video demonstrates a brand new infinite combo for Street Fighter’s Ryu. The infinite is supposedly more practical than the previous one, and allows for a fair bit of damage even though opponents can likely use directional influence to escape. It’s also important to note that this seems to work only on characters in the same weight class as Fox.

Justin Wong, Floe, Marq Teddy, and More Test Street Fighter V in Southern California

As some of you may have known, Street Fighter V was playable at the recently concluded BET Experience. The event, held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, saw a number of notable Southern California players try their hands at the new game, including Evil Geniuses’ Justin Wong, Floe, Filipinoman, Chris Tartarian, Marq Teddy, and more.

While the matches weren’t streamed, EGP|Wonder Chef was on hand to capture some off-screen footage. You can check out a few of these matches below, but be sure to head on over to the full playlist for the rest.

Desk Compares Street Fighter V’s Current Stun Levels with Street Fighter IV

Among the myriad details that set Street Fighter V apart from Street Fighter IV, it appears as if the upcoming title (or, at least the early builds we’ve seen) features a much lower stun threshold than its predecessor. In order to test this theory, Desk has once again done some experimenting and provided a comparison video of his findings.

As you’ll see below, Desk takes two separate situations and replicates them in Street Fighter IV as best he can. In both instances, it appears as if the number of hits necessary to confuse an opponent in Street Fighter V is slightly smaller.

While the research is compelling, it’s incredibly important to remember that what we are looking at is a super early build of Street Fighter V. With months and months of development still to go, it’s possible that very little of what we’ve seen so far will make it into the final release.

Undefeated of the Southwest Returns to Arizona with Marvel Competition, Community-Funded Pot Bonuses, and More

undefeatedofthesouthwest

Next month, the Arizona-based tournament Undefeated of the Southwest will return for a second installment, this time with an added emphasis on Marvel competition. With all the talk of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 falling off as a tournament draw, the organizers behind this event are set to bridge Community Effort Orlando’s hype and the intense competition of Evolution with their regional.

Undefeated of the Southwest Volume 2 will see players like Kumite in Tennessee’s Cloud, BROKENTIER teammates Clockwork and Angelic, Kane Blueriver of The Black Eye, and many more converge on Phoenix to participate in both singles and group competition.

In an effort to up the hype even further, the folks over at r/MvC3 are currently in the process of accumulating funds for a pot bonus. While they’ve already reached their initial $200 goal, donations are still being accepted. Furthermore, HitBox Arcade will provide a multi-console version of their popular arcade stick to the first-place finisher.

Instead of resting on their laurels and hoping the series’ long history would keep them in the limelight, the Marvel community is prepared to put in the work necessary to keep Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 an integral part of the fighting game community. Events like these can go a long way towards reminding everyone why a game is popular, and it’s fantastic to see players stepping up to the plate in Arizona.

Undefeated of the Southwest Volume 2 is scheduled for July 4. More details can be found here.

Relive Community Effort Orlando 2015’s Intense Ultra Street Fighter IV Finals

To say Community Effort Orlando 2015 was one of the most exciting Ultra Street Fighter IV tournaments we’ve ever seen wouldn’t do the event justice. As players poured into Florida in hopes of qualifying for Capcom Cup 2015, it was clearly evident we were in for something special, but what resulted was definitely beyond our wildest imagination. This was a tournament that saw Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara and Momochi of Evil Geniuses eliminated off-stream early into the top 32 bracket, after all.

While the presence of Kazunoko and Evil Geniuses’ PR Balrog in the finals is far from a surprise, their fellow top-three participant made waves throughout the entire bracket. 801 Strider, whose Abel has been decimating opponents throughout the Street Fighter IV series for years, devastated everyone who stood in his way over the course of the weekend with his clever oki setups and tricky grappler play.

In addition to being the one who initially sent Daigo to the losers bracket, Strider would go on to defeat Dieminion of Yomi Gaming and Mad Catz’ Mago (fresh off a first-place finish at South East Asia Major 2015) before falling to Kazunoko in winners bracket after the Japanese player made an impressive comeback. Though he would win his own close set against PR Balrog and get the runback, Strider would again fall to Kazunoko, but not before impressing just about everyone watching in the venue and at home with his tenacity.

If you missed out on watching these matches live, Capcom Fighters wasted no time uploading replays. Feel free to check out the finals below and then visit the official playlist for more.

With how heavily Mortal Kombat X can get changed with each patch, it’s not surprising that players keep developing new combos and setups for the game’s various characters. In his latest combo video, Elite Tournament Chile’s McFly sets out to explore the new techniques available to this Kung Lao variation after the most recent patch. Give it a spin and see what you can pick up.
