Rising Up: Sagat bread-and-butter combo guide — Punishes, confirm combos, juggles, & more

Champion of Muay Thai, former Heavenly King of Shadaloo, and series veteran since the original Street Fighter, Sagat has finally come back for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. Returning with kara uppercuts, safe-at-range Tiger Knees, angry scar, and a fireball almost rivaling Guile’s Sonic Boom, Sagat feels so much like his old self that he’s almost out of place in SFV. Sagat was released alongside G, who felt extremely experimental by design, so I think the developers were probably trying to adapt and deliver Sagat to be as true to type as possible, especially considering he’s a fan-favorite who was added per mass request. Still, he has some new tools to play around with, namely a Trigger with a guard break. Both Sagat’s triggers are fairly straightforward and his main consideration when considering combos has been “how to convert at range.” So it didn’t take me long to put together this guide of his most essential combo routes, so that players can quickly learn the basics and start developing their neutral game. Here are your best bread-and-butter combos that I’ve found for every common scenario. This video features anti-airs, punishes, confirms, counter-hit combos, crush counter combos, juggles, and more.

This Sagat bread-and-butter video is not the full Sagat tutorial I’m working on, but rather simply a guide to his basic optimal combo routes. The combos are all my own findings, alongside a few things I’ve observed from other players. Sagat is a relatively simple character and I’m pretty sure there weren’t any overt combo routes I missed, but I wholeheartedly encourage anyone watching to point out anything I did miss in the comments, for both my sake and for other players, so that I can amend them into the final video when I release it!

Remember to subscribe to the Shoryuken channel so you don’t miss any of the awesome upcoming SFVAE content.

Sagat’s concept art showcases Sagat’s old-school Muay Thai flair — and gives his pet tiger an eye-patch

Capcom’s Shadaloo C.R.I. recently released Sagat’s early concept art, alongside details concerning his newest design.

Sagat’s newest iteration in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition hasn’t seen any drastic changes. The Shadaloo C.R.I. recently uploaded a collection of concept art for the King of Muay Thai, which highlighted his nomadic status, as well as revealed an intent to stay true to old-school Muay Thai style.

“He’s a character that has a lot of flavor, so there wasn’t much we could change about him,” artist Takayuki Nakayama wrote. This is certainly true: Sagat maintained his iconic design with minimal changes in dress, donning a simple shawl over which to hide his scar from the trembling masses. “His body is covered in scars from training and his fights,” Nakayama explained, “so he wears the upper body cloth in order to not frighten the villagers – the kind considerations of a king.”

Alongside Sagat now pads a beautiful and ferocious tiger, named ‘Phicit Willa Maiu’ or ‘Willa Maiu’ for short. According to Nakayama, the tiger’s full name means ‘victorious courageous cat’ in the Thai language, although Sagat originally named him just ‘Maiu,’ or ‘cat,’ in kittenhood. Concept art shows Maiu wearing an eyepatch to match his owner, with bandages and a scar, to boot. Fans can check out the artwork here.

FGC Philosophy sits down with FGC coach iHai, talks about the journey of learning Tekken

FGC Philosophy sat down recently with Detroit’s Tekken teacher iHai to talk about Tekken 7‘s accessibility, meta, and how to improve through peer practice.

Full disclosure: When I was a little Crow_Scrubboy in the world of Tekken, one of the first sets of high level game-play I ever saw was iHai vs. Joshimitsu in Detroit. Prior to that I had never seen Korean back-dashing, knew frame data, tiers, or any of the series’s history — and despite my overwhelming ignorance, iHai was patient and forthcoming in explaining the game’s mechanisms and theory in a way I could understand. If you’re looking for an excellent analytical mind in the world of Tekken tournament play, make sure you watch the interview above, and check out iHai’s twitch stream!

Chill out with IKevinX’s anime references for Cooler’s Dragon Ball FighterZ reveal trailer

This past weekend at Evo, Dragon Ball FighterZ fans were in for quite the treat — as following the conclusion of a thrilling Grand Finals set that saw EchoFox|Sonic Fox crowned as the first ever DBFZ Evo Champion, Producer Tomoko Hiroki announced that Frieza’s older brother Cooler, from the fifth and sixth Dragon Ball Z films, would be the seventh DLC character coming to the game, battling in his iconic Final Form.

Though the attacks and motions we seen are primarily taken from his initial appearance in Cooler’s Revenge, there are also a few attacks taken from his return as Meta-Cooler in The Return of Cooler. His introduction is, of course, him transforming into his final form — lovingly recreated shot-for-shot from the original film, as we’ve come to expect from Arc System Works and Bandai Namco Entertainment. Next, we see the Chaotic Dead End that Cooler used to incapacitate Piccolo after the Namekian defeated his Armored Squadron, followed by the Death Chaser, which appears to be a Level 1 super special attack. Cooler also seems to have the Nova Chariot as another Level 1, with a series a strikes leading into the Supernova Cooler most likely serving as his Level 3, showcasing his increased brutality, compared to his brother. His victory pose also seems to have been taken from The Return of Cooler, specifically where he chokes Super Saiyan Goku as Meta-Cooler. You can see the full video below.

Also, 876TV has uploaded Cooler’s Japanese trailer, giving us another good listen to his theme, as well as our first look at his Z-Stamp, Lobby Avatar, and Colors, confirming that his Color 2 reference will be Frieza.

Though no release date for Cooler has been yet revealed, he will be available as part of the FighterZ Pass for $34.99, alongside the already-released Bardock, Broly, Fused Zamasu, SSGSS Vegito, Base Goku, Base Vegeta, and a seventh, currently-unrevealed character (that is heavily-rumored to be the Dragon Ball Super version of Android 17 seen during the Tournament of Power).

Dragon Ball FighterZ is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam, with a Nintendo Switch version on the way.

Bonchan showcases what Sagat can do in this Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition highlight reel from LiangHuBBB

Whenever a legacy character comes to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition there are certain players who folks expect to pick said character up again. This is true for the game’s latest batch of characters, especially since it involves the long awaited Sagat.

For Sagat, one of the players people are expecting to pick him up is none other than Red Bull’s Bonchan, who was known for using the character in Street Fighter IV, even taking him to 2nd place at Evo 2014. Now, LiangHuBBB has compiled a video featuring highlights of Bonchan using Sagat in online matches in Street Fighter V:Arcade Edition.

As the video below shows, Bonchan seems pretty much at home with this new version of his character. He’s doing well with him online, while demonstrating some techniques and traps that other prospective Sagat players should likely learn.

Catch true love makin’ with match footage from the Capcom vs. SNK 2 monthly singles tournament at Club Sega Shinjuku

The classic Capcom vs. SNK 2 just refuses to die, largely in part thanks to the efforts of veteran players hosting tournaments for the game. One such tournament was the monthly CvS2 tournament at Club Sega Shinjuku.

The tournament, which took place this past weekend, featured a number of Japan’s top Capcom vs. SNK 2 players, including the legendary Ryo “d44BAS” Yoshida. Now, while the latter is still the most dominant force in the game, the rest of the players are no slouches either, showcasing how much the game’s meta has changed over the years.

For those interested in catching up with this tournament, d44BAS has now uploaded footage from it onto his YouTube channel. Take note that the video below is one long video covering the entire thing (and not individual match videos). That said, it’s still a treat for anyone who loves this game!

For anyone interested either watching or actually joining, the next Capcom vs. SNK 2 monthly singles tournament is scheduled for September 8.

Upgrade your inventory with this character breakdown for Shovel Knight in Rivals of Aether

When the initial shock from the Shovel Knight trailer for Rivals of Aether wore off, more than a few questions lingered about how his single player roots translated to his battle style. Thanks to the latest character breakdown from Beefy Smash Doods, we have more insight on how the Blue Digger really works — and he’s wild.

No, you weren’t just imagining it — Shovel Knight really does have a shop system in RoA, making him, perhaps, one of the most unique character archetypes seen in a platform fighter in quite some time. Damaging opponents drops gems that you must collect, just like in his original platforming game. Knocking an opponent away gives you a choice — either pursue them further and edge guard, or quickly summon the shopkeeper and try and buy a new item.

SNK classics Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 coming to Switch, Garou: Mark of the Wolves coming to PlayStation 4 and XBox One in Japan

The  week will see a couple of classic games from SNK’s Fatal Fury series hit modern consoles in Japan thanks to Hamster Corporations ACA NEO GEO line — Real Bout  Fatal Fury 2: the Newcomers, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

Coming to Switch in Japan is Real Bout Fatal Fury 2. This is actually the 3rd Real Bout Fatal Fury game and the seventh Fatal Fury game overall, and introduces Rick Stroud and Li Xiangfei. In addition to this, it changes the way the series’ multi-lane battle system works – doing away with the ability to shift into the second lane, and instead turning that into a sway lane where players can temporarily move into to avoid attacks.

Meanwhile, Garou: Mark of the Wolves (which, arguably, needs no introduction to the FGC) arrives on PlayStation 4 and XBox One in Japan. The game is seen by many as SNK’s equivalent to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and revamps the Fatal Fury formula. It does away with the multi-lane system altogether, and adds the unique T.O.P system which powers characters up depending on how much life they have.

Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 hit Switch as part of the ACA NEO GEO line yesterday, August 14. Garou: Mark of the Wolves will arrive on PlayStation 4 and XBox One as part of the sale ACA NEO GEO line this Thursday, August 16.
