Ample Source Material Makes Expanding Pokkén Tournament Easy, Says Harada

During the same interview where he provided the first bit of Tekken x Street Fighter information we’ve received in some time, Bandai Namco Games’ Katsuhiro Harada touched on another title that’s seen little in the way of updates since it was first announced.

Pokkén Tournament represents a very interesting take on the hugely popular Pokémon franchise, allowing players to take direct control of the pocket monsters themselves in a fighting game environment. While The Pokémon Company is generally very controlling over how their property is used, mostly due to the series’ younger following, Harada mentioned to Korean website inven that they’ve been very open to his team’s ideas.

“Surprisingly, they weren’t as strict as I expected them to be with Pokkén,” he explained. “We sent The Pokémon Company twenty ideas and they allowed all of them barring one: I suggested that we have different Pokémon Trainers fight, and they immediately denied it.”

The interview also touched on the future of Pokkén should the first installment be popular. Though obviously a little too early to talk on such subjects, Harada did mention that the extensive amount of Pokémon now available in the franchise should make expanding the game a relatively easy feat.

Currently, only Lucario, Machamp, and Blaziken have been revealed as playable characters, all of which share very common characteristics. This new statement from Harada, coupled with earlier promises that Fighting-type Pokémon won’t take up the entire cast, opens up a ton of possibilities.

Pokkén Tournament is scheduled to release in arcades sometime next year.

EG|Momochi, RZR|Xian, and MD|Luffy Face Off in Capcom Cup 2014’s Final Ultra Street Fighter IV Matches

While hype matches were distributed throughout the entirety of Capcom Cup 2014’s bracket, the most exciting Ultra Street Fighter IV bouts definitely came as the talent pool began to shrink.

After sending high-level competitors like MD|Luffy, Infiltration, DIG|Ryan Hart, and Bonchan home during his meteoric rise through the losers bracket, EG|Momochi would have a shot at RZR|Xian in grand finals. Proving yet again that his Ken is nothing to scoff at, the Japanese player would have a lot on his plate thanks to Xian’s recent proclivity for switching from his championship main Gen to newcomer Poison.

The folks over at Capcom Fighters recently finished uploading footage from this major tournament, so be sure to catch up on the finals below. The rest can be found in the official playlist, and full results are available in our coverage hub.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Omega Mode Roundup feat. Extensive Ibuki Combos, C. Viper Strings, and More

Start the weekend off right with this collection of week one Omega Mode technology from around the community. We’ve got some videos featuring characters like C. Viper and T. Hawk who haven’t received much attention since the update dropped, so be sure to check those out!

Everyone has seen top Ibuki players like HORI|sako bust out full Tsumuji loops during tournaments, but the loops offered up by Omega Mode put some unlikely buttons to use to make similar things happen.

Her crouching strong, as an example, was previously used almost exclusively for spacing, whiff punishing and buffering moves against overly-aggressive opponents. Additionally, she has gained more useful links outside of the usual buttons, as well as some of the standard fare that everyone else picked up like new EX properties, goofy juggles and even an air throw, all of which make it on to the screen in this footage from Qelaion.

Yesterday we featured a Juri combo that looked like it came straight out of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and today we’ve got another short collection of similar strings from the villainess. Delephantz has compiled a quick series of combos that show off some of the fighter’s new properties to help get the ideas flowing. They also included a reset option off a double focus attack that can lead into tricky situations for defenders.

This Chun-Li combo compilation from Ruben Grajeda puts the fighter’s feet to good use in leg loop after glorious leg loop. These aren’t quite the loops that we see from combo masters like Desk, but they bring in some of her new options for results that live up to the Omega Mode standard.

Up next, JusticeSoulTuna brings us two combo videos: one for the completely re-worked Omega Decapre and a second for the currently-elusive Omega C. Viper. We’ve already seen a multi-character combo video from JusticeSoulTuna, but these two videos take a much deeper look at what these two characters have to offer in the new mode.

And to close things out, we have a T. Hawk combo playlist from Gonzalo Torres that explores the grappler’s new offerings in the Omega update. Though each combo has been split into its own video–we’re told because that was much easier to handle than trying to make one longer piece with a lack of video editing software and proper recording equipment–there are plenty of good things to see, so if you’re mourning the loss of T. Hawk’s gun (rest in piece, incredibly fast Condor Spire) maybe these combos will cheer you up.

Send us all the crazy stuff you’ve found in Ultra Street Fighter IV’s new Omega Mode via our tip line!

East Coast? California? See Who Came Out on Top at Curleh Mustache Battle Royale 4

Apart from the usual competitions, Northeast Championships 15 also hosted the fourth installment of IFC Yipes’ Curleh Mustache Battle Royale invitational series. Unlike the regular editions, however, Battle Royale focuses on team competition, bringing together five-player teams based on region and letting them duke it out.

As with previous installments, the competition was fierce, with squads based out of New York, California, Philadelphia, and more determined to prove they were the best. If you missed out on catching the action live, Spooky recently uploaded an entire playlist of footage to help you catch up.

Who took first place in the end? You’re gonna have to watch the videos below (or head over to our coverage hub) to find out!

Recent Ultra Street Fighter IV Patch Expands Decapre’s Horizons

If you’re a Decapre player like me, then you’re probably pretty excited about most of her changes in Ultra Street Fighter IV’s ver.1.04 update. We’ve already seen how the changed input priority on her Ultra 2 motions gives her more combo possibilities, and now William Ho has shared a video showing what else she can do thanks to the recent adjustments.

Aside from new avenues into one of her most powerful attacks, the changes also allow her to combo into her EX slide out of crouching strong. This, and the other combos shown in the short video, could end up being important tools for her in the long run.

Emerald Splash! Noriaki Kakyoin Confirmed for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven

jjba-eyesofheaven-scan-2-kakyoinAfter being officially announced in V-Jump, tag fighter JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven received a follow-up feature in another of Shuheisha’s Jump magazines. While still devoid of concrete gameplay information, it did confirm that Stardust Crusaders protagonist Noriaki Kakyoin will be appearing in upcoming title.

Unlike newcomers Diego Brando and Rudol Von Stroheim, Kakyoin has made appearances in the franchise’s two previous fighters, which may provide some hints as to how he will play in Eyes of Heaven. Backed up by Hierophant Green, this smooth operator typically has a variety of defensive and long-range attacks at his disposal, most notably the multi-hit Emerald Splash projectile.

Kakyoin grows a growing cast of returning characters that includes Jotaro Kujo, Josuke Higashikata (of Diamond is Unbreakable), and Caeser Zeppeli.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven is being developed by Bandai Namco Games, and will be playable at this weekend’s Jump Festa. The title will eventually arrive on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, though no release date has been announced at this point in time.

Bandai Namco Games Considering PC Release for Tekken 7

tekken-7-locationtest-poster-622-crop

Earlier this year, rumors began to swirl about Tekken 7 heading to PC due to an appropriate listing discovered on Amazon UK. While it quickly disappeared from the online retailer, it was considered a sign that the port was at least in the realm of possibility.

During an interview with Korean website inven, Bandai Namco Games’ Katsuhiro Harada was asked to comment on this speculation. “We have not yet decided or confirmed platforms other than arcade since it is not done yet,” he answered. “We are considering a PC version for certain countries that prefer or need to play on PC.”

While he reiterated that a PC release is not confirmed, he did say further optimizations would need to be made to the title due to its use of Unreal Engine 4 so that a wide range of players could have an enjoyable experience.

Tekken 7 will launch in Japanese arcades in March.

Bask in the Glow of Pepopulo’s Latest Ultra Street Fighter IV Combo Video

After spending a few days with Omega Mode, standard Ultra Street Fighter IV combos may sound like a distant memory obscured by the fog of two bar EX specials that mimic supers and other move properties that we never thought we’d see. But just when we’d nearly become forever lost in that fog, pepopulo appeared to burn away that fog with unreal combos from the standard game.

Unlike similar videos we’ve seen over the past couple of days, all of the content that pepopulo has included in this combo video was recorded before 1.04 dropped. That means these combos have been around for months and many of the juggles, as well as some of the links, haven’t seen much (if any) use. The combos include insane Chun-Li Kikoken loops, Ryu landing four aerial Tatsus, Oni breaking out five Demon Slashes, and a whole lot more.

Commentors have dubbed pepopulo “Desk Jr.,” which seems rather fitting. Check out the reel below to see if you agree!
