Capcom Utilizing Unreal Engine 4 in Street Fighter V

Although it’s only 20% complete at this point in time, some more details recently came to light about Street Fighter V’s development. According to information released by Epic Games this morning, Capcom has licensed the studio’s latest iteration of their popular Unreal Engine to help bring the upcoming title to life.

“Our goal with the next generation of Street Fighter is to take our beloved fighting game franchise and bring it to our fans in the best way possible,” Capcom producer Bochan Kim explained in Epic’s announcement. “In order to fully deliver on that promise, we know we have to incorporate the latest and greatest technology available, which is why we partnered with Epic Games to power Street Fighter V using Unreal Engine 4.”

Taka Kawaski of Epic Game Japan reiterated this point, also mentioning that they are providing dedicated support to Capcom during the game’s creation.

The franchise’s previous entry, Street Fighter IV, was developed with a custom engine engineered by Dimps.

Street Fighter V isn’t the first fighting to utilize this technology, however. Bandai Namco Games’ Tekken 7 is also being built upon Unreal Engine 4’s foundation, a decision that has arguably paid dividends in improving the 3D fighter’s visual quality. Additionally, Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- and next year’s Mortal Kombat X employ Unreal Engine 3.

Street Fighter V will land on PlayStation 4 and PC at launch, though no concrete release date has been set.

BIFU|SpabRog Details How to Fight El Fuerte in Ultra Street Fighter IV

El Fuerte is one of the characters that has gotten a lot of attention lately in Ultra Street Fighter IV, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Pepeday from the Fukuoka Gamers Club.  As a result of this, many folks are coming to realize just how hard dealing with him can be once he’s gained momentum.

For those players who have gotten sick of getting Quesadilla Bombed, Bifuteki’s SpabRog recently started a brand new tutorial series dedicated to showing how to deal with the cooking luchador. The first three videos of the series are already available – the first provides a quick series overview and the other two deal with what a competitor’s mentality needs to be when playing against Fuerte and how to properly meaty him when he gets knocked down.

As a Fuerte player himself, Spab is offering quite a service with these videos, so check them out and see what you can learn.

BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Newcomer Bullet Takes Center Stage in Updated EXTEND Scenario

This week’s issue of Famitsu announced that Arc System Works will be dropping an updated version of BlazBlue: Chronophantasma on consoles early next year. This release will include Celica A. Mercury and Lambda-11 as playable characters, recent gameplay adjustments made in arcades, and a brand new EXTEND episode that adds to the story told in the original title.

One of the scenarios covered in this expanded story will focus on Bullet, the mercenary who debuted in the first iteration alongside fellow newcomers Amane Nishiki and Azrael. The plot will detail the fighter’s history before the events of Chronophantasma.

We can only assume that other cast members that made their first appearances in Chronophantasma will also be given their very own storylines, but that remains to be seen.

BlazBlue: Chronophantasma EXTEND is scheduled to release in Japan for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox One on April 23.

Super Smash Bros. 4’s Perfect Pivoting Brings Back Memories of Melee’s Wavedashing

It’s not quite a wavedash, but it’s likely the closest thing to Melee’s much-loved mechanic that we’re going to see in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

A perfect pivot allows characters to turn quickly in place through the proper canceling of a dash with the flick of the stick in the opposite direction. As the name implies, this maneuver requires perfect execution in order to perform, but the payoff makes it worth programming into muscle memory.

Why’s it so useful? Well, lots of reasons. If an attack is performed during the pivot, that attack will gain directional momentum and allow for a sort of sliding attack to come out. This works for specials as well as tilts and smashes; you can even perform a perfect pivot grab. This sort of slide can be used for everything from positioning to baiting to allowing punishes that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

As with everything else, the slide distance out of a perfect pivot varies from character to character, with Captain Falcon having the longest range and Jigglypuff having the shortest.

For more details including practical application examples, as well as a full list of perfect pivot slide distances, check out the video below.

Put Your Buttons to Good Use with This Tutorial on Decapre’s Normals

Until you understand a character’s normal attacks, you don’t really understand the character. That seems pretty self-evident, but the truth is that many characters have plenty of buttons that can fill all sorts of different roles and lead to different results because of their properties. Sometimes these basic tools, which should be the foundation of any character’s play, get overlooked in favor of flashy combos or vortex setups; I was personally guilty of the latter for longer than I’d like to admit.

Decapre players should keep this lesson in mind when they check out the Ultra Street Fighter IV tutorial below, which focuses entirely on the masked fighter’s normal attacks. You’ll find frame data and hit boxes, as well as how to apply each button in combat. Frame traps, block strings, footsies tips and yes, even some setups make it on to the reel–she is a reset-heavy character after all. You’ll also find a handful of short combos that are used to demonstrate certain situations and provide basic follow-ups for properly-applied normals.

Many of our readers will quickly notice that the tutorial isn’t in English. Luckily, it does have English subtitles and most of the important information comes in the form of standard combo notation, so nothing should be lost.

Street Fighter V Development Currently 20% Complete

Love it or hate it, Street Fighter V is coming, but there’s definitely some room for your opinion to change between now and the game’s release, according to some new details released in this week’s issue of Famitsu.

During the magazine’s interview with Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono, it was relayed that the upcoming title is currently only 20% of the way through development. While not all that surprising (especially with the Work in progress gameplay footage attached to the bottom of the gameplay trailers), it does give a good point of reference for fans to keep in mind during discussions of early footage.

A concrete release date has yet to be confirmed, but a recent Amazon listing possibly revealed Street Fighter V as an early 2016 title.

We are in the process of translating Famitsu’s full talk with Ono, so stay tuned for more details.

Izaw Demonstrates Useful Sheik Techniques in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

While Sheik saw a massive drop in high-level competition during the transition from Super Smash Bros. Melee to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, things are definitely looking up for the mysterious fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. This is due in part to some useful movelist expansions afforded to her after separating from Zelda as well as a reverting of numerous changes made to her attacks in Brawl.

In order to assist players who may be looking to main Sheik once again, Swedish competitor Izaw recently released a super useful guide that covers a number of techniques crucial to playing her competently.

Some of the topics covered in this video include helpful movement options, ways to properly make use of Sheik’s new Burst Grenade special (as well as its variable properties), the multiple trajectories of Bouncing Fish, a deadly chain grab, and much more.

That Ain’t Omega! Doopliss Examines New Combo Potential Offered by Recent Ultra Street Fighter IV Update

It’s no question that we’ve seen some amazing and hilarious things come out of Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Omega Mode, but there were plenty of balance tweaks that took place in the 1.04 patch outside of the new edition select that have yet to be fully explored.

In an effort to remedy that, Doopliss sat down with some of the affected members of the cast and created combos crazy enough to feel like they belong in Omega Mode, but that could very possibly soon grace tournament streams and ranked matches. That is, if everyone spontaneously develops robot-like execution.

Everything from Decapre stunning Guy and Dhalsim hit-confirming like you wouldn’t believe to a tool-assisted Guile combo that will make you need a cold shower make it onto the reel. Even if Omega Mode isn’t your thing, Doopliss proves that there’s still a lot of fresh fun to have on the main side of the patch.
