Ultra Arcade Announces Killer Instinct World Cup for 2016, $10,000 Prize Pool Guaranteed

Corrections: This article incorrectly assumed that the Adam spoken of during the announcement was Adam “Keits” Heart of Iron Galaxy Studios, but we were recently informed that was incorrect. Also, the event will not be held at Ultra Arcade itself. Our apologies for these mistakes.

Since opening in February, Ultra Arcade has served as a home base for Texans in the San Antonio area, hosting numerous tournaments and high-profile invitationals like Curleh Mustache South, and a recent announcement definitely shows they are in it for the long haul.

During a special birthday broadcast, Evo 2014 champion Emmanuel “TSC|CDjr” Brito welcomed Ultra Arcade owner Brandon Alexander onto the stream to reveal their plans for a major Killer Instinct tournament.

Disappointed by the turnout for the game at recent tournaments, Alexander thought it may be a great idea to emulate Capcom Cup and hold qualifiers for a major Killer Instinct tournament. After discussing the idea with individuals at Microsoft, he worked out concrete plans for the Killer Instinct World Cup.

Similar to Capcom’s tournament series, Killer Instinct World Cup will be made up of players who qualify through events next year, such as Evo 2015, Ultra Arcade’s own Kombo Klash competitions, and other major events. A point system will also be in place to award consistent placers.

Other official details are still in the planning stages, but Alexander mentioned wanting to provide points to this year’s Kumite in Tennessee as well as online tournaments ran by Level|Up Series’ Alex Valle and Brito himself.

At this point, Alexander is personally providing $10,000 to the prize pool, but that number may grow as more support is thrown behind the event.

More information is sure to trickle out over the next year, so stay tuned.

Dead or Alive Creator Believes Latest Installment Has Ruined Franchise

tomonobuitagaki-622-crop

Tomonobu Itagaki has never been one to keep his opinions to himself, and his latest shot was taken at a series he himself helped create.

Itagaki, who is currently working on the Wii U title Devil’s Third as part of Valhalla Game Studios, recently responded to a critical statement made by a fan with regards to Dead or Alive’s direction after the developer’s highly publicized resignation from Tecmo Koei in 2008.

In his response, Itagaki agreed with the sentiments expressed by the initial poster and those that followed, saying, “[Dead or Alive] was totally ruined, spoiled. I can’t/shouldn’t avert my eyes from that fact.” He followed that up by saying he is interested in doing something for the franchise after his work on current projects has completed, though what that something is remains to be seen.

Itagaki hasn’t worked on a major title in the series since 2006’s Dead or Alive 4 due to the aforementioned parting of ways with Tecmo, but the fighter survives to this day without his input thanks to multiple iterations of the fifth installment. Another update, Last Round, is scheduled to release in February of next year, with upgraded graphics for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, balance changes, and new characters.

Whether you agree or disagree with Itagaki, his emotions are understandable for a man typically seen as the father of the Dead or Alive series (which he’s referred to as his daughter in previous instances), though they could also be construed as sour grapes from a developer no longer in control of a franchise.

In any case, it’s rather hard to see him returning to the series any time soon thanks to his strained relationship with Tecmo Koei, so any hopes of a glorious rebirth for Dead or Alive under his leadership should certainly be tempered.

Sate Your Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- Hunger with These Basic Sin Kiske and Elphelt Valentine Combos

Hopeful Sin Kiske and Elphelt Valentine mains looking to gather as much information on Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-‘s console newcomers before its release this month just received a couple of nice resources thanks to the folks over at 4Gamer. The website recently released a couple of videos that demonstrate basic combos for both characters, which should serve as a great starting point for more advanced strategies once everyone gets their hands on the game.

Each combo is shown once at regular speed and a second time in slow motion. That second, slowed version gives viewers enough time to see each move involved, which can be important when entering the unfamiliar territory of a new game. While short, both videos include strings that end in a knockdown, anti-air combos, and some raw Dust shenanigans.

We’re also able to catch a glimpse of the massive fish and other snacks that Sin is capable of inhaling post-combo to refill his appetite meter. We do only get to see the hungry fighter consume a couple of different bits of food, but this is one of the few times when “bread and butter” combos could quite literally involve, well, bread and butter.

I’ll see myself out.

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is scheduled to launch in Japan on December 4 with a North American release following on December 16.

UltraChen TV Takes a Closer Look at Capcom Cup World Warriors DIG|Ryan Hart and Snake Eyez

With Capcom Cup 2014 only a few weeks away, Capcom and UltraChen TV continue to highlight the players who will be participating in the big game.

First up, they take a look at none other than the Prodigal Son himself, Team Dignitas’ Ryan Hart. This Guinness world record holder is a perennial favorite in both European and international competition thanks to his strong Sagat play.

The second video focuses on Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis, arguably the best player in Southern California and possibly the entire west coast. Lewis has had a banner year, making top eight at Evo 2014 as well as winning consistently at Wednesday Night Fights.

As with all these breakdowns, UltraDavid and James Chen’s analysis features high-profile matches of both players to break down just what they bring to the table for Capcom Cup 2014.

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-‘s Leo Whitefang Available in Japan on December 18

ggxrd-leo-screen-622-crop

According to Siliconera, the latest issue of Famitsu has announced that Leo Whitefang, the second downloadable character in Arc System Works’ upcoming fighter Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, will be making his way to consoles on December 18 with fellow debutante Elphelt Valentine.

Leo, who we know to be a major part of the game’s story as one of three ruling kings, utilizes a unique stance where he faces away from the opponent. Brunhild, as the fighting style is named, takes away his ability to air block but grants him access to stronger attacks and extra mobility. Unconfirmed leaks have also made mention of an anti-air projectile, but details are still scarce.

Similar to Elphelt, Leo will cost ¥800 (~$6.74) upon release; unlike her, however, it’s currently unknown if he will be free for a limited time in North America.

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is scheduled to launch in Japan on December 4, and will be available in the west starting December 16.

Xuses Explores Some Lesser-Known Uses for Vergil’s Jumping Light Attack in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

It’s not like Vergil really needs any more tools to help keep him firmly placed among the top characters in the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 roster, but that hasn’t stopped him from receiving plenty over the life of the game. XusesGB contacted us earlier today with a video showing off a bit of new tech that this son of Sparda borrows from Wolverine, and it stands to possibly change how the character is played in certain matchups.

It turns out that, much like Logan, Vergil is capable of performing a jumping light followed immediately by an X-Factor activation. If the airborne attack hits a grounded opponent, the following X-Factor combo guarantees a kill. However, due to the nature of its hitbox, the tactic can’t be used as an instant overhead against everyone.

In cursory testing, I’ve found this strategy works against crouching opponents with unusually large hurtboxes, like Sentinel, Tron, M.O.D.O.K., Hulk, and Nemesis, but that it also whiffs on plenty of the average and smaller hurtboxes for characters like like Spencer, Wolverine, and even Captain America. These lists are, of course, far from exhaustive, and there are potentially ways to alter the tactic to make it work against the shorter folks.

There are still some situations where this tactic can be used as it currently exists, and there are certainly plenty more to be discovered. To get those thoughts flowing, Xuses has included several sample setups in the video below.

Bingo! Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Cody Breaks Out Some Character-Specific Tactics

Grab your striped jumpsuit and have your buddy deliver a knife to the center of the stage two days in advance (that’s how it gets there, right?), it’s time for another round of Cody character-specific combos from freeno0b. As many Ultra Street Fighter IV combos that stray from the standard, optimized bread and butter selections, some that you’re about to witness have rather limited uses. But that’s okay, Cody has all the time in the world, why not try and turn some heads through the vigorous application of damage scaling?

That’s not to say that there aren’t some pretty devastating and useful options in this footage, like when Cody manages to squeeze in three fierce attacks before moving on to a Criminal Upper against Sakura or the various ways that he’s able to confirm into his Ultra 2. With so many character-specific options, it’s hard to believe Cody when he says he’s bored.

If you missed the first round of character-specific combos from freeno0b, check them out here!

TortillaHabibi Explores an Impressive Amount of Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Cast in Multi-Character Combo Video

Every once in a while a combo video comes along and reminds us that there’s always new territory to discover in fighting games. No matter how old or played out a title may seem, we’re sure to see things from time to time that raise eyebrows and get us back into the lab to try out some new things ourselves.

This video from TortillaHabibi has plenty of combos that fit that description perfectly. Though it weighs in at a light two and a half minutes, it spends time with over ten characters, some of which we rarely get to see in combo videos. Be sure to stick around to the end for a particularly impressive string from Juri.

Did you see something that you’ve never seen before? Let us know in the comments!
