Killer Instinct 2.1 Update Now Live – Kan-Ra, Various Balance Changes, and More

If you haven’t been obsessively watching your Xbox One for signs of Killer Instinct’s latest update, here’s some great news: the patch that upgrades the game to ver.2.1 is now live, bringing with it a brand new character, balance changes for the rest of the cast, and more.

Kan-Ra, the trap grappler who brings a number of unique mechanics to Iron Galaxy Studios’ work on Killer Instinct’s second season, is perhaps the most visible piece of today’s update. While he’s the third fighter to be added to the playable cast this season, he’s the first newcomer since Sadira from the initial release, bringing some fresh new ideas to the popular reboot.

Fans should be prompted sometime today to download this update (these things happen in waves), but those who purchased the Combo Breaker pack will have to wait until this Sunday, November 30, to play with Kan-Ra.

A full list of changes included in ver.2.1 can be found here.

MCZ|Daigo Umehara and EG|Justin Wong Recreate Iconic Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Parry at Moment 37 Reloaded

This weekend, Super Arcade hosted Moment 37 Reloaded, a tournament honoring the ten year anniversary of Evo Moment 37, perhaps better known as the Daigo Parry. Everyone who has a background in fighting games can directly quote the commentary in that legendary clip which touches briefly on Daigo’s rare angry play and Justin’s turtle style. Even though the footage is old, the way that the crowd positively explodes when Daigo pulls off the maneuver still gets my blood pumping.

This is what fighting games are all about.

So when Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara and Evil Genius’ Justin Wong sat down to their first-to-three exhibition in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike this weekend, it was understandable that everyone wanted to see that legendary moment a second time. The scene was set perfectly: Daigo locked in on Ken and Justin on Chun-Li and they hit the streets of New York City, the same stage in which the original event took place. Of course, James Chen and David “UltraDavid” Graham filled the microphones with their knowledge of the original commentary and the crowd’s energy was absolutely palpable every time Justin filled up a bar of Super meter.

Even though it seemed as though we were all ready, we were not. At around the five minute mark in their set when Daigo actually performed a full parry mid-match and converted it into the same massive punish as a decade prior, the microphones stopped picking up sound. The hype was too much to record.

If you missed the set, you can check out the full video below, but do yourself a favor and at least watch the parry portion. Even if you’ve already seen it. Even if you watched it live. Ten years ago this moment helped to keep the fighting genre alive during its darkest hours. I can only imagine the positive energy that this new moment will bring to the current generation of fighting fans.

For full tournament results as well as additional details surrounding the event, head over to our post covering Moment 37 Reloaded.

Taskmaster Throw Conversions, Frank West Solo Leveling, and More – Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Roundup

Today, we’ve got a collection of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tech that represents some of the most interesting stuff surrounding the title that has surfaced over the last couple of weeks.

To start things off, Honzo Gonzo’s provided a Taskmaster video that demonstrates a couple of ways to convert a corner throw into big damage. Under the right circumstances, this option tops out at over one million damage–pretty impressive for a throw opener.

This tech from BE|Kane Blueriver proves that Frank West can weather the battle with nothing but his trusty camera. The combo shown allows for the shutterbug to solo his way up to level 4–no DHC, THC, TAC, or assists required.

In this clip, Aonien puts Phoenix Wright to work on some solo damage numbers that are certain to turn a few heads. The combo makes use of a corner loop available in Turnabout Mode to produce a devastating series of objections to put down even the heartiest opponents.

Chun-Li has some of the flashiest ground-heavy combos in the game and this string from Eldon Moore is no exception. Through the use of only a single meter, the strongest woman in the world can dish out a whopping 830k damage before the feet stop flying.

Fans of big body characters from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will enjoy this combo for Haggar, backed up by Sentinel and Hulk. As BE|Kane Blueriver shows off, this combo dishes out an insane one million damage for the low price of a single bar of meter, while itself building nearly two.

Dungeon Fighter Online Global Version Set to Begin Beta Testing in Early 2015

Last summer, the North American servers for Dungeon Fighter Online were taken down after a run of almost exactly three years. This looked to be the end of an era for the popular online game, at least for many English speaking players. Back in May of this year, Neople, the company behind the title, announced that there would soon be a global version of the game hitting the market. This version doesn’t yet have a concrete release date, but the game’s Facebook page suggests thatbeta testing should begin in March of next year.

If you’ve not had a chance to try Dungeon Fighter Online for yourself, it’s a side-scrolling beat ‘em up that combines RPG elements like class selection and leveling up through a skill point system with fighting game elements like combos and super meters for a truly unique hybrid gaming experience. After selecting a class, players fight off droves of enemies with flashy sword swings and special moves that feel truly satisfying to unleash. The game also offers arenas where you can pit your character against those of other players in battles that are undoubtedly different from a traditional fighting title, but do offer some similar aspects.

Below, you’ll find a video that demonstrates the combo potential of the Avenger class when taking advantage of Metamorphosis mode in a PVP environment. The video begins with some basic meter building and then gives a good idea of how combos unfold within the game once the hits start flowing. While the damage numbers rival Marvel games in size, do note that players have incredible amounts of health, so the numbers only look intimidating.

Also note that the 3rd Strike sounds, as well as Yun spamming palms, have been added for comedic effect.

North America Getting Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- Demo Next Week

ggxrd-solky-622-crop

Though fans outside of Japan were able to get their hands on Arc System Works’ Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- demo by setting up a foreign PlayStation Network account, an early look native to North America will be available very soon.

According to this week’s installment of PlayStation Blogcast, a demo for the PlayStation 4 version of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- will arrive on the North American PlayStation Network next Tuesday, November 25. Much like the Japanese version, this will only be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Specific details weren’t divulged during the podcast, but one can assume that the North American demo will carry the same limitations as its Japanese counterpart, where only Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske were playable in the arcade (set to beginner) and tutorial modes.

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan on December 4, arriving in North America shortly after on December 16.

Possible Chin Infinite Discovered in King of Fighters XIII

Many of the combos in King of Fighters XIII already feel long enough to be “infinite” combos. If a combo can kill an opponent from full health before ending, it may serve the same purpose as an infinite, but it still can’t truly go on forever, sadly.

Luckily for Chin players, a true infinite combo was recently discovered and uploaded to Niconico. Appropriately enough, when performing the new combo, Chin looks to be flailing around in a bit of a frenzy, as if he’s stockpiled too many drinks.

Could this new tech mean that we’ll see even more of the drunken fighter at major tournaments than we already do?

Brawl Karter Celebrates the Release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with Final F.L.U.D.D. 3DS Tribute

With today’s release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, a great deal of upcoming content will likely involve the console capable of outputting HD images as opposed to Nintendo’s handheld system–though that isn’t to say the 3DS hasn’t served the community well so far.

As a final farewell to the game that got us to this point in Super Smash Bros. 4’s life, Brawl Karter has put together a tribute to the handheld version of the game loaded with that same F.L.U.D.D. goodness we’ve seen from them in the past. You can expect plenty of high quality edge guarding with the water gun as well as other Mario-related antics in this video, so study up and get ready for the next battle.

If you missed Brawl Karter’s previous F.L.U.D.D. compilation or their anti-Little Mac F.L.U.D.D. applications, you can check those out by following the respective links.

Balance Changes Heading to Killer Instinct with Kan-Ra Update on November 24

maya-tgs-screens-006-622-crop

While Killer Instinct’s Kan-Ra will certainly be the main focus for players when he is released next week, the update that makes him playable will also extend balance changes to the existing cast members. These range from simple bug fixes to other adjustments that will further affect gameplay and, in turn, competition.

After finishing up their live stream this morning, Microsoft creative director Adam Isgreen took to the Ultra-Combo forums to provide a full rundown of the system and character changes that will go into effect on Monday, November 24. You’ll find this entire list below, so peruse it at your leisure and get ready for the tweaks the update will bring.

Killer Instinct 2.1 Balance Changes

System Changes

  • Characters are no longer allowed to perform an ender right after activating instinct mode.
  • Sweep attacks are now unbreakable and cannot be counter broken from.
  • Some characters had gratuitous windows for Heavy Manuals after Heavy Linkers. These are a bit tighter now.

Jago

  • Linker Shadow Wind Kick is now projectile invulnerable just like the neutral version.

Sabrewulf

  • Fixed a bug that caused Wulf to face the wrong direction if he was throw at a certain point during his dash.
  • Fixed a bug that let your opponent break you during Feral Cancel in some neutral situations.
  • Fixed an overlapping manual/double window on Heavy Leap Slash linker, causing people to get a manual when they expected a double.
  • Fixed a bug that was adding extra delay after the super flash during Shadow Eclipse before the move became active.

Glacius

  • Glacius is no longer vulnerable during Instinct Activation.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Glacius to get “crossed up” by Maya’s Mantis while he was crouching, which got him hit when he shouldn’t have.

Thunder

  • Fixed a bug that allowed Thunder to tech out of throws during Call of Sky.
  • Linker Shadow Triplax has armor now, just like the neutral version.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Thunder from using the Lv3 Call of Earth ender with the Light or Medium buttons.

Sadira

  • Fixed a bug that caused Sadira to experience her special landing frames when scoring a counterhit jumping attack after a Web Cling.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Sadira to land farther away from her opponent after a Heavy Recluse Linker if you held the Medium button instead of the Light button.

Orchid

  • Juggle Firecat projectiles have more knockback on them.
  • Shadow Uppercat does less damage.
  • Air Throw does less damage.
  • Grenade explosion hitbox size reduced about 25%.
  • Fixed a bug that let Orchid Counter Breaker out of Shadow Uppercat in some situations.
  • Performing an air throw after an opener Shadow Uppercat now counts as an opener, so performing a juggle ender right after this will count as opener-ender and be breakable.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Orchid to not fall correctly during an air throw attempt.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed Orchid to tech throws during Grenade Toss.

Spinal

No bones to pick with this hard-headed fellow this time.

Fulgore

  • Linker Shadow Blade Dash is now projectile invulnerable just like the neutral version.
  • Fixed a bug that caused your inputs to reverse after a Shadow Plasmaport into the left corner.

TJ Combo

  • The linker version of Shadow Flying Knee comes out a bit faster so that it can combo off of light manuals now.
  • Use of Vortex/Cyclone in a combo (non-linker version) adds additional KV.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Heavy Spin Fist Linker to act slightly differently when coming from Light or Medium buttons.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed him to tech throws while attempting a Shoot Toss.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Counter Hits with Tremor to play the wrong reaction.
  • Fixed a bug that caused TJ’s stage ultra to slow down if used after Auto Barrage.
  • Fixed a bug that caused TJ to get stuck when performing Powerline into Shadow Flying Knee into a Counter Breaker.

Maya

  • Shadow Spirit Slicer now launches standing opponents, but will get all five of its hits much more reliably.
  • Temperance and Vengeance separate more violently after Emnity Strike or Shadow Spirit Slicer
  • Mantis does less damage when used as part of a combo and can no longer cash out damage.
  • Mutli-hit normal attacks now build a more appropriate amount of shadow meter.
  • Fixed a bug that let Maya use Shadow Spirit Slicer without holding both Daggers.
  • Fixed a situational bug that allowed Maya to perform whiff cancels into special and shadow attacks.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Maya’s Mantis and Tumble Kick to break Glacius’ instinct armor even on block/miss.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Maya from starting an Ultra if she opened a combo with Axe Kick.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Maya’s daggers to go missing if she was grabbed by certain characters after throwing homing Emnity Strike.
  • Mantis hits are now counted by the combo counter.
  • Fixed a bug that let Maya instinct cancel out of her lv4 Launcher Ender.

Additionally, Isgreen mentioned that they will soon be providing an option for players to upgrade to Ultra Edition, which will allow them to get their hands on new content and other bonus material sooner. This won’t be open forever, however, so be sure to take advantage of this offer while it’s available.

Kan-Ra will join the Killer Instinct cast for Ultra Edition owners on November 24, with a later release for Combo Breaker packages scheduled for November 30. More details can be found in Isgreen’s official post.
