AVM|GamerBee, DIG|Ryan Hart, and pH|HooDaMan Featured in Capcom Fighters’ Latest Player Spotlights

The folks at Capcom Fighters recently released three more player spotlight interviews in their running series designed to help fans of fighting games learn a little more about the scene’s biggest names before Capcom Cup this December.

This batch boasts interviews with AVerMedia’s Bruce “GamerBee” Hsiang, Ryan “Prodigal Son” Hart of Team Dignitas, and Pandora House’s Hooman “HooDaMan” Ghahremani. As in the past, these players discuss their fighting background, greatest achievements, most painful losses.

Perhaps the most inspiring segment of these interviews comes when GamerBee shows just how important “community” is within the fighting game community. He discusses at length his first trip to Evo back in 2010 when he made it to the top eight, which just so happened to be his ultimate goal. He goes on to reminisce about his return home to Taiwan when a large group of his friends and fellow players gathered to offer him a well-deserved warm welcome.

To learn more about these players, check out the videos below and provide your thoughts in the comments.

Twitch Plays Pokémon Broadcast Tackling Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

Earlier this year, a broadcast by the name of Twitch Plays Pokémon exploded onto the streaming giant, allowing players to input commands via chat and play the popular RPG series along with thousands of like-minded participants. Created as a sort of social experiment, it quickly gained notoriety on the platform as players blazed through various installments.

While its popularity has fizzled out over time, Twitch Plays Pokémon is still going to this day, and most recently finished up a playthrough of Pokémon X back in August. As fans wait for the release of Omega Ruby next month, the creators have provided a number of distractions during downtime, including randomized Pokémon Stadium battles.

When Twitch Plays Pokémon first appeared, copycats (and copycats of copycats) quickly sprung into existence trying to garner the same amount of fame with similar concepts. We previously featured one such mimic, Fish Plays Street Fighter, a few months back, but now the channel that started it all has jumped into the fighting arena with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.

Much like previous incarnations, spectators are currently able to use the stream’s chat to interact with the handheld title, forcing popular Nintendo characters to duke it out in rather haphazard battles filled to the brim with…pause screens.

Though we doubt this will take away from viewing popular weekly streams like Smash @ Xanadu, Wednesday Night Fights, Next Level Battle Circuit, and the like, it certainly is an entertaining way to spend a few minutes of downtime.

You’ll find the live broadcast below, but be sure to visit Twitch to take full advantage of this concept in the chat.

Warner Bros. Developing Live-Action Mortal Kombat X Series

mkx-scorpionferratorr-622-crop

With Mortal Kombat X slated to release on every major platform next year, publisher Warner Bros. is going full bore in their promotion of the vicious fighter. In addition to the previously announced graphic novel series from DC Comics, the studio’s new Blue Ribbon Content production wing is currently developing a live-action series that will tie into the upcoming title.

Very few details have yet to be released for this project, but it appears as if it will follow Mortal Kombat X’s multi-generational theme, with characters both new and old making appearances throughout the series.

The long-running franchise received a similar live-action treatment in Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which saw two seasons of episodes premiere online from 2011 to 2013. It is currently unknown if Blue Ribbon’s series will be connected in any way.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on April 14.

Charging! Pepopulo Pushes Decapre to Her Limit in Ultra Street Fighter IV

After covering each of Ultra Street Fighter IV’s newcomers, pepopulo returns today with a combo video focused entirely on Decapre. Though she looks very similar to Cammy, this masked clone brings a wide collection of new attacks and strategies to the table that set her apart from the world warrior.

The video opens with a Psycho Stream ball that both keeps Ryu close to Decapre and then juggles him for an air throw, but the craziness just keeps on coming. You’ll also find some great red focus applications, Rapid Dagger extensions, and more over the course of pepopulo’s three-minute demonstration.

While flash is definitely the name of the game here, you may be able to find a few new links that you weren’t previously incorporating into your own gameplan.

If you missed out on pepopulo’s previous videos, you’ll find them all here.

Lab Zero Games Adds PlayStation 3 Arcade Stick Support to Early PlayStation 4 Build of Skullgirls Encore

Back in July, we reported that Lab Zero Games was looking for a way to add support for PlayStation 3 controllers in the upcoming PlayStation 4 version of Skullgirls Encore. While little was discussed after that initial announcement, it looks like they’ve made some good progress on this issue over the past few months. According to a recent video from lead developer Mike Zaimont, they have implemented a custom USB driver in the current developer builds of the indie fighter that adds the necessary functionality.

According to CEO Peter Bartholow, the driver, which was developed for free by programmer John “Cowboy” Bellomy from Naughty Dog in his free time, allows any controller that identifies itself as a “generic USB gamepad or joystick” to work with the game. This should cover the various arcade sticks Mad Catz has released for the console as well as some other brands and custom PCB options, such as Godlike Controls’ Cthulhu line of boards that are used in many custom built arcade sticks.

However, Bartholow clarified that devices that identify themselves as a DualShock 3 will not work with the driver, which means things like Akishop’s PS360+ board and the InPin PS2 to PS3 adapter will not be supported.

Bartholow also mentioned that PlayStation 4-specific functions, such as the Home and Share buttons, will need a DualShock 4 to be utilized.

Public testing of the USB driver will begin this weekend at Ultimate Gaming Center’s charity event in Panorama City, California, and continue on into Sony’s PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas this December. The developers encourage everyone to make the trip out to these events to try out their sticks and provide feedback. If all goes well, the driver should be in place when Skullgirls Encore launches on the PlayStation 4 next year.

Additionally, Lab Zero will be graciously allowing other developers to use their driver for free, with the only condition being that they share any work done on the driver with the Skullgirls developers.

With this work in place, fans will not have to shell out another chunk of money for a stick upgrade in order to play the new release, a barrier to entry that keeps many from playing other such releases.

Diggin’ in the Carts Catches Up with Notable Bandai Namco Composers to Discuss Their Contributions to Tekken’s Musical Evolution

Over the past few months, Red Bull Music Academy’s Diggin’ in the Carts has explored the history of the Japanese video game music scene and the impact their most notable composers have made across the world. The series limited run has featured musicians like Yoko Shimomura (Street Fighter II), Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), and Masashi Kageyama (Gimmick!), among others, along with input from folks outside the medium who have been influenced by the genre.

The sixth and final episode, released earlier this month, spends much of its duration focusing on Tekken. The shift from cartridges to CDs in the 90s allowed video game music to expand at a rapid pace. Bandai Namco Games’ Katsuhiro Harada doesn’t attribute this to an evolution within the community itself persay, but the loosening of restrictions placed on musicians by previous formats.

Composers who worked on various installments of the historic fighting game franchise, including sound director Kanako Kakino, Yoshie Takayanagi (Tekken, Tekken 2), Nabuyoshi Sano (Tekken 3), Akitaka Tohyama, Taku Inoue, Rio Hamamoto, Keiichi Okabe, and Yuu Miyake, discuss the influences they brought to the table over the course of the series. From spruced-up guitar riffs reminiscent of The Chemical Brothers to drum and bass compositions, the fingerprints of each composer can be found in Tekken even today.

Be sure to let us know which piece of Tekken music is your favorite in the comments.

NISHIKIN Carries Blanka to Victory at Taito’s Ultra Street Fighter IV Nationals

A couple of weekends ago, Taito and Capcom’s national Ultra Street Fighter IV tournament series collaboration in Japan culminated in the Isshuu Sengeki Cup, otherwise known as the Taito Arcade Nationals. While the event had a lot on the line in terms of monetary worth, its status as a premier tournament on the Capcom Pro Tour gave it some added weight in terms of the automatic Capcom Cup qualifying spot for the first-place finisher.

Taito Arcade Nationals was a veritable who’s who of Japanese competitors, with players like Evil Geniuses’ Momochi, Daigo Umehara and Mago of Team Mad Catz, NISHIKIN, Kyabetsu, KoujiKOG, Shimauta, Kazunoko, NINOMAE, Nekojita, EBI, YUBIKEN’s SUPER SANTAROU MAN, and Bonchan in attendance to prove their skills on the national stage.

Amazingly enough, it would be NISHIKIN and his admirable Blanka play that would see the most success this day, dropping player after player on his way to grand finals. In fact, his dominant run would see him go undefeated until winners finals, where Kazunoko would manage to take one game before ultimately being sent to losers.

The event culminated in an intense grand finals between NISHIKIN and Sagat master Bonchan, who traded games until Blanka eventually came out on top.

If you missed watching this event live, Capcom Fighters recently uploaded some great footage for you to catch up with. We’ve included a few of the tournament’s late matches below, including the back and forth grand finals match, along with the full 3-on-3 team tournament also held over that weekend.

Full results from the Taito Arcade Nationals can be found in our coverage hub.

Darkstalkers Resurrection Discounted on PlayStation Network in Celebration of Halloween

darkstalkers-resurrection-psn-622-crop

While Halloween is usually a time for watching scary movies, gorging on way too much candy, and perhaps getting up to a little mischief, I’m sure there are some folks out there who opt to shut off their lights (discouraging would-be trick or treaters in the process) and play fighting games instead. Fortunately, PlayStation Network has provided a sale on a rather spooky fighting game series that should help you make sure your training is as holiday-appropriate as possible.

Darkstalkers Resurrection is available for only $7.49, or $5.24 if you happen to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber.

Developed by Iron Galaxy Studios, Resurrection includes remastered versions of Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3, complete with online play, training mode, and everything else we’ve come to expect from modern fighting game releases.

If you’ve yet to grab Darkstalkers Resurrection, now is the perfect opportunity to do so. But don’t delay, because it will only be available at these discounted prices until October 27.

Less spooky offerings include Soulcalibur II HD Online and the mobile version of Tekken 6, more details for which you’ll find here.
