James Goddard and Ken Lobb will be talking Killer Instinct on today’s Microsoft Studios LIVE Show

While we haven’t really heard any sort of exciting news for Killer Instinct in some time, Microsoft’s reboot of the classic fighting series has been soldiering on with a healthy competitive scene, that’s still been hosting amazing tournaments.

For fans of the series, today’s Microsoft Studios LIVE Show might have a special treat for you. The stream — which will be taking place at 12:00 noon Pacific time today — will have special guests in the form of KI Design Director James “DJames” Goddard (also the creator of Street Fighter‘s DeeJay, and Weapon Lord) and series co-creator Ken Lobb.

Now, before you get excited about the possibility of something being announced at the show, the official Killer Instinct twitter account has stated that fans should keep their expectations low. They’ve specifically said that the show is meant to be “low-key”, so you shouldn’t expect any major announcements. That said, the Microsoft Studios LIVE Show does usually talk about the future of the studio’s games — so maybe you might still get some indication of what’s in store for KI in the future.

Killer Instinct is currently available on both Xbox One and PC.

ARIKA demonstrates Fighting EX Layer’s upcoming 1.0.7 “arcade mode” patch

As previously reported, an update is set to arrive for Fighting EX Layer that will give it a proper arcade mode. And recently, ARIKA’s Ichiro Mihara took some time to show off some footage of this upcoming update.

The stream — footage of which, you can see below — showed off a build of Fighting EX Layer‘s 1.0.7 patch that they were currently testing, including arcade mode and its features. This includes three difficulty settings (Easy, Medium, and Hard), as well as the expected ability to pick Gougi deck, control type, and color for each character.

No specific date for the update was given, however Mihara did state that they do hope to have it out by this coming weekend.

None of the upcoming free DLC characters were shown, however, as they have stated that they were saving them for Evo.

Fighting EX Layer is currently available on PlayStation 4.

JusticeSoulTuna demonstrates the wall carry possibilities of Lars’ Rage Drive in Tekken 7

Tekken 7‘s Lars, mostly thanks to his frame data and nerfed whiff-punishment game from previous entries, is a character that has to make every hit count. One of the ways he can do this is through the versatility of his Rage Drive, which allows him to either apply pressure in neutral or score excellent damage in juggles.

The primary way his Rage Drive helps him in juggles is through wall carry — that’s the subject of today’s tutorial from JusticeSoulTuna. Lars’s RD turns nearly any combo starter into a half-life or more damage conversion, and can do so from even the back corner of Geometric Plane.

Nunchuck opponents into submission with this no-nonsense SoulCalibur VI Maxi breakdown

It’s time for some nunchuck action. SoulCalibur VI‘s premiere martial artist is back, furiously swinging his weapons while seamlessly switching stances (or just mashing and wrecking anyway). At first glance, his gameplay seems to be perfectly preserved in comparison to his past versions, but there’s more to it.

Hayate brought veteran Maxi player Saitoh in as a consultant. As usual, they begin by addressing the character’s changes. Maxi doesn’t have a Pure Soul Loop 3, which used to transition between his Left and Right Outer stances. While he is missing a few things, most of his mechanics remained intact — like the Wavering Lights stance and his staple attacks, 44AB, 236B, and 33B~A.

Maxi gained a new Break Attack, A+B, which will certainly help get through Guard Impacts. He has good tracking moves that let him approach fast, like Right Cross AA, which combos on counter hit. His mechanics are also enhanced in general; stance switching is now rewarded by increased damage and an auto-GI window. Compared to his earlier incarnations, flowing from stance to stance shouldn’t be as risky at highly competitive gameplay.

Hayate made a similar breakdown recently covering the SoulCalibur VI version of Siegfried.

Breaking BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle’s boundaries with combos and glitches

Just how creative you can get in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle? While we’ve already seen plenty of cool tech for just about everyone in the cast, the community doesn’t run out of ideas. Check out a couple of excellent combo videos sent in by our readers, as well as a couple of hilarious bugs.

Doopliss sent us a truly impressive combo video titled “Truly Crossing The Line,” which features multiple characters. It features a lot of really creative combos, like a sequence where Tager is stuck in a Gravity Seed and comboed by Ruby, a 20,000 damage combo by Chie, and some impressive teamwork by Jubei and Yang. Note a really sweet usage of Makoto’s assist at 2:50 to push the opponent closer to Tager after his Gadget Finger, followed by a glitch that allows switching to Makoto. There’s also a thrilling setup between Carmine and Weiss that lets the RWBY character set up her seals. It’s really a great collection that shows off how creative you can get in the game.

That’s not everything, though. Y. Xiao made a great video that focuses exclusively on the RWBY characters included in the game (so far?). The combos are really good, but also, the sequences seamlessly flow from Ruby to Weiss, then Blake to Yang.

Darius Bright focused on a pretty unpopular pairing, Yukiko and Kanji. His exploration of this Persona 4-focused team brings something interesting to the table, as the two seem to have very good synergy. Granted, they are in the need of buffs, but it’s cool to see the two work together; for instance, Yukiko has enough time to Flame Boost while Kanji holds down the opponent.

Speaking of breaking the game’s boundaries and our favorite training dummy, there’s apparently a glitch with Yukiko where you can set up as many Agis on the screen as you want. Is this the buff she needs? (Watch your sound levels when viewing the clip below).

kamoihito also did this, and set up 83 Agis right on top of Chie.

Lastly, Jubei seems pretty startled during Azrael’s stunning Astral Heat.

Phrasefight, a hybrid rhythm and fighting game, is coming to Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s Switch is getting another offbeat fighting game. Mediascape is bringing Phrasefight, studio VeryOK’s rhythm and fighting game hybrid, to Nintendo’s portable console.

First released on PC and Mac back in February, Phrasefight combines both genres resulting in a game that emphasizes timing and precision. Players take turns on offense where they’re challenged to hit attack prompts that correspond to attacks on the opponent. Getting these prompts right or wrong determines if an attack connects, or misses. Victory is determined not by a health bar, bur rather on a player’s performance with these prompts.

The game will be playable in both handheld and docked modes. It’ll support HD Rumble and 2-person share play, with one Joy-Con per player. No release date has been set as of yet, though the game will be playable at Zentame 2018 at Gifu in early August.

In the meantime, here are a couple of videos from VeryOK showing the game in action.

Bandai Namco’s Mark Religioso talks how SoulCalibur VI is retelling the stories of SoulCalibur I and II

As most fans already know, SoulCalibur VI will be set in an earlier era in the series’ history. The game specifically goes back in time to the period of the first two SoulCalibur games. Recently, as part of their SDCC livestream, IGN Live got a chance to talk to SoulCalibur brand manager Mark Religioso about the move back to this specific point in time. Specifically, he discusses how they’re approaching this retelling.

For SoulCalibur VI, the story is told through Kilik’s point of view. This is a reflection of the tag line “history hides away more than one truth,” with the game showing “the truth” so to speak, as Kilik sees it. That said, despite the story being from Kilik’s point of view, newcomer Grøh will also be something of a protagonist in the game’s story mode as well — though they didn’t divulge any further details on him.

In addition to this, they also talk about Voldo, who was confirmed at SDCC. Specifically, they talk a bit about how he’s become iconic to the franchise, and also go a bit into how he’s changed in this game. You can check out all this at the 1 hour, 5 minute mark in the video below.

SoulCalibur VI launches on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on October 19, 2018.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Switch open beta starts in August, full retail release on September 28th

When Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s Nintendo Switch port was revealed at E3 a little while ago, it was slipped in so quietly that one wondered if you were supposed to notice at all. If this almost-covert announcement created any fears this port would be lacking, Namco’s slew of announcements today may put those worries at ease:

Three brand new modes that are (currently, at least) exclusive for the Switch, a full retail release date of September 28th, and an Open Beta on the horizon. Suddenly, the Switch version is looking to be the most feature-packed version of the game. We’ll have to see how the tentatively-scheduled open beta pans out this August.
