Sector K Games announces Evo side tournament for Punch Planet, new character Maxx will be playable

At last year’s Evo, indie developers Sector K Games revealed the alien amazonian Tyara for their excellent in-development sci-fi fighter Punch Planet. It’s a new year, and a new (also very large) alien is about to make his debut in the Sector K’s official side tournament at the Indie booth.

This year, though, we’re being spoiled: we’ve received a killer teaser ahead of the official trailer’s release:

The Blowfish-like Bruiser, Maxx, will be playable on the Evo 2018 floor — and we expect, much like Tyara’s reveal last year, that a full trailer will be coming out soon. Considering how brutal this brief teaser looks, we can only imagine what his full move-set will be like!

Check out the first gameplay footage of SoulCalibur VI’s newest fighters, Voldo and Talim

San Diego Comic Con 2018 took place this weekend, and the Bandai Namco team took the opportunity to feature the latest developments of SoulCalibur VI. The most recent additions to the growing roster are Talim and Voldo, and after their character trailers, we now get to see them in action.

IGN had the opportunity to interview Bandai Namco Brand Manager Mark Religioso. Religioso goes over Voldo and his origins, mentioning how the venerated Soul character became a staple of the series over the years. Unfortunately, there isn’t really much information revealed; they reiterate the fact that Character Creation will return in some form, and remind us that SoulCalibur VI will be at Evo 2018.

Talim was one of the most popular characters, according to a character poll. Religioso also mentions that the game is much more cinematic and features slow-motion in order to make it more appealing as a spectator game. There is some Voldo footage in the background, but keep scrolling below to see dedicated game-play clips.

Featured partially in the clips above, here’s a more substantial look at Voldo in action. The player pulled off a couple of interesting combos and attacks, using classic Voldo stances.

Here’s some more of Talim in action against Yoshimitsu and Grøh:

TCOL | 56K_modem shares his fighting game origins, mentality in tournaments, and more

“The game will always be there. You want to make sure you’re training efficiently, and not just playing online mindlessly for four hours.”

Esports team The Collective continues its interview series with their various sponsored players with Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Karin pro 56k_Modem.

While many sponsored players are arcade veterans, Twitch Streamer and Xanadu regular 56k_Modem is relatively new to the FGC. This might be why his mentality on tournaments and traveling is refreshingly optimistic: in today’s interview, he stresses the importance of relaxing and getting the most out of every tournament opportunity, win or lose.

MKK TV shows off what high-level Primal Rage sets look like

Though I try to keep myself as informed about as wide a range of fighting games as possible, I must lead with an admission: I have spent my whole life ignorant of the mechanics of Atari’s Primal Rage. This arcade relic has bizarre anti-piracy measures that make it difficult to emulate, and with Atari themselves long abandoning the series, this (at the time) commercial success seemed to be lost in history.

But as with everything FGC, there’s always someone that knows this game’s mechanics and inner workings inside and out. And at MKK TV, there’s at least a few:

MKK TV’s long sets above shows off the combos, footsies, and high octane pace of PR matches thanks to its movement speed and DarkStalkers-like chains. In many ways, the game was well ahead of its time mechanically: check out this SRK forum post from Hanzo Hasashi for more info on its innovative aspects, such as the addition of the damage percents in combo displays, and its infinite protection system.

theScore esports documents Rick Fox’s transition from basketball star to esports star

Rick Fox, owner of ESports team Echo Fox, had a slow but important transformation from Basketball Star to ESports entrepreneur. More important than that, though, was the role that he played as “Defender” — and we’re not talking about Basketball. Rick Fox, at a time when no one else of his visibility would or could, defended video games as sport to a media that refused to believe him, and through that, helped raise the interest and prestige of ESports as a whole.

That’s the subject of theScore esports‘s latest documentary, which covers how he found the bridge between the athletic and digital competitive worlds. Though the large focus of the documentary above is on Echo Fox’s venture as a whole, the FGC plays a large part in saving Echo Fox itself — particularly their game-changing 2017 signings of fighting game players like Justin Wong.
