Blade Strangers’ Japanese release date revealed in new trailer

While we’ve known that indie crossover fighter Blade Strangers was launching sometime this Summer, we have yet to receive a specific release date. That is, until now: as a new trailer from the game’s Japanese publisher Pikii has revealed when it’s launching — in that region.

As the new trailer below mentions, Blade Strangers will arrive on PlayStation 4 and Switch in Japan on August 30, 2018.

As for when the game releases in the West (on those same consoles, and PC), no exact release date has yet been revealed by Nicalis.

Check out Arcade Shock’s photos of the next generation HORI Real Arcade Pro at E3 2018

Aside from new games, E3 also has a number of peripheral manufacturers showing off their new stuff. One company at the show floor is HORI, who is displaying a prototype for their next generation Real Arcade Pro stick. We have already seen some images thanks to MarkMan on social media; Arcade Shock is also at E3 2018 and has taken some more photos of this new HORI RAP, showcasing just how different it is from the current designs.

The current Real Arcade Pro designs haven’t really changed for some time now, dating from the RAP3 and RAP.N from the previous console generation. For this next generation RAP, HORI is adding in features that newer arcade sticks from their competitors have been including — such as an opening top panel, and an easily-replaceable top panel cover.

Interestingly enough, the top cover opens on the side opposite from the player side — similar to the VLX series, but different from competing arcade sticks. As on the VLX, this much more closely mimics how control panels on actual arcade cabinets usually open.

On top of these, the prototype on display features full LED lighting on the case, as well as the buttons and lever. Whether this will remain on the production version (especially the latter) remains to be seen, however!

Mayor Cody’s stats and movelist for Street Fighter V are now up on CFN

In anticipation for his mayoral debut in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Capcom have now postedp Cody’s movelist and stats on CFN.

While Cody retains a number of his old moves (including the ability to throw dirt after a knockdown), the movelist does demonstrate how much it’s grown, thanks mostly to his V-Triggers “Side Arm” and “Dirty Coach”. Another new thing Cody games is a series of target combos including some that involve chaining jabs, in a way mimicking how he controlled in the old Final Fight games.

As for Cody’s V-Triggers, as previously detailed, the knife or pipe that he gains gives him access to a number of extra moves, including new specials and a new target combo. You can check the inputs for all these below.

In addition the the movelist, CFN also lists Cody’s stats. He sits on both 1,000 health and 1,000 stun — basically the average for most characters — something that should ease players minds once Cody officially takes office on June 26.

Shoryuken at E3 2018: Hands-on with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

A familiar feeling at its most refined.

Shoryuken was on the scene at E3 2018 and got the opportunity to give the recently announced Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a test run on day one. The title was a blast to try, especially with so much to play with. What seemed to be about half of the roster was available along with dozens of stages — if it were to release at this point, the title would appear to have been a full game.

That being said, there was way too much content for the time granted to gain a deep analysis of all of the changes to the characters and the combat mechanics, but it gave a good amount of insight to what the game hopes to accomplish.

Snake Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Presentation

First things first, the presentation, while initially similar to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, has many new tiny details that make a huge difference to the overall experience. The characters are much more detailed and dynamic, seemingly combining the clean look of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with the more-realistic textures of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Also, fighters from the same franchise are no longer tied to appearances of a particular entry. Using The Legend of Zelda franchise as an example, Link is based on his Breath of the Wild incarnation, Zelda is designed to match her A Link Between Worlds design, and Ganondorf is representing his classic look from Ocarina of Time. Many characters also have additional outfit choices, like the newly-introduced Inkling.

Ganondorf and Zelda Super Smash Bros Ultimate

There were a couple of new stages on display as well; Moray Towers from Splatoon, and the Great Plateau Tower from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild were both interesting additions to the game. Moray Towers felt like a more angular version of the Wrecking Crew stage without its stage gimmick and with its own unique flair, and the Great Plateau Tower allowed for creative uses of stage destruction to take your opponent out.

The new special effect designs really set the action apart from its predecessors, too: you gotta love how clean the colors look. The new cloud effect designs are so clean and crisp, you can practically feel the impact of being blown away.

Characters

Returning characters aren’t all how you remember them. A large amount of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cast have some major tweaks that will change the way they are played. Some of the veteran fighters have been given new mechanics altogether to match their franchise’s more-recent entries.

Link’s bombs, for example, are no longer traditional explosives. The bombs must be activated by the Sheikah Slate, making the projectile practically harmless when initially thrown, but with strategic timing, the bomb can do damage in ways never possible before. This also gives the player time to think about how they want to use the weapon, instead of being forced to react quickly to the traditional timer associated with the special move.

There are bound to be countless other changes made to the returning characters, so be on the lookout!

Inkling

Inkling Super Smash Bros Ultimate

The zippy Inkling from the Splatoon franchise can be played as both an Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy of various looks, and is a mobility master that can spray its ink to do additional damage to the opponent. This is a very interesting mechanic which will have to be looked into further to determine its overall effectiveness.

The standard B attack shoots ink from the traditional Splatoon blaster; the shots can be redirected from whichever way the player was facing at the initial shot. The side-B attack initiates a dash with the roller weapon. The down-B move will have the Inkling toss an ink grenade inflicting heavy damage. Finally, pressing up-B will activate an upward dash. Be wary of using up too much ink though, once the gauge runs out, it will need to be reloaded by holding down the B button. The Inkling’s Final Smash may also be redirected when used, so don’t fret if it doesn’t make initial contact.

Ridley

Ridley Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Ridley, the space pirate responsible for a great majority of Metroid protagonist Samus Aran’s strife, is a major addition to the series, largely in part to the popular demand for the character. At first glance, The scheming reptile appears similar to Charizard in general motion, but this is nowhere near the truth once one grows accustomed to the outcome of his phenomenal special attacks.

Pressing B releases a fireball attack that can be charged for maximum effect. Ridley’s side-B is a personal favorite due to the overall intensity of the move after a successful grab, it’s really just that cool. Down-B performs a downward slam similar to King Dedede. Finally, the up-B move activates an upward dash. Also, his Final Smash — slamming his victim against the side of Samus’ ship and blasting through both with a huge energy beam — is particularly impressive.

Closing

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was an absolute blast to play, and it sets itself up to be the most comprehensive title in the series to date. While the roster includes every character in the franchise to date, some with new looks and others with new moves, everything feels positively fresh. It will be exciting to watch the development of this fan-favorite franchise as it releases later this year for Nintendo Switch on December 7.

Oh also, as a side note, I didn’t get the chance to use a whole lot of new items, but the fake Smash Ball is a monster, even if you aren’t the one to break it, you will get hit — hard. You have been warned! As if the previous games’ trick hammer wasn’t ruthless enough.

For more details on the title, its features, and its characters, check out the official website with screenshots and trailers available for the entire roster! Also, stay tuned to Shoryuken for news, interviews, and other hands-on experiences at E3 2018!

Arc System Works is counting down to reveal a collaboration with “Kill la Kill” animators Studio Trigger

A mysterious countdown ends on June 15th.

A website went up overnight with red letters saying “Count down” and two numbers — the first being hours, the second minutes. The timer apparently goes up to June 15th, 8:00 PM PT.

An image on the site’s server surfaced (featured above) that says “Trigger X Arc System Works.” This is pointing out Studio Trigger, an animation company most known for titles like Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia.

Whatever this collaboration means, we’ll find out soon. It could possibly be a fighting game involving one of the anime studio’s franchises, or perhaps the studio is working on a series involving the characters from Arc System Works’ IP (maybe Guilty Gear Xrd rather than BlazBlue, since they’ve done a BlazBlue anime before).

(BlazBlue: Alter Memory wasn’t very good.)

SoulCalibur VI story mode screenshots show Astaroth and tease storyline

More and more secrets from SoulCalibur VI have been getting revealed, over time. With a newer build, improved UI, and gameplay footage of new characters like Geralt, we’ve learned a lot about the upcoming Stage of History. And lore aficionados can get their fill as well, thanks to a batch of revealing screenshots teasing many plot points of the game.

The SoulCalibur VI story trailer kicked things off, teasing a mix of game-engine rendered cutscenes and rich illustrations with dialogue between characters. We see some new characters show up, such as Xianglian, who is Xianghua’s sister and is very relevant to Story Mode. Notably, one of the screenshots with Maxi features Astaroth in the background; we’re rather expecting the big axe-wielder to show up, but this is definitely additional evidence that he will probably be announced soon.

Other than that, we see lots of Kilik — getting assaulted by Grøh, as well as Nightmare tempting him. Kilik has been stated to be the protagonist, so we’re going to see lots of his internal turmoil with his tainted, demonic side. Also notable is the screenshot with Xianghua wielding Soul Calibur, the counterpoint to the game’s evil sword, Soul Edge. There’s also a screenshot showing the timeline, which is a good indication of how the story mode might actually play out in practice.

Enjoy the gallery below, and make sure to tune in to the E3 SoulCalibur VI showcase.

ZeRo wins the first Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, the E3 2018 Invitational

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now a reality, and what better way to welcome it than with the Invitational tournament at E3. Even the game’s creator Masahiro Sakurai made an appearance, commenting how worried he was that the game might freeze during gameplay. However, the event had plenty of hype and excellent matches in the brand new game.

Starting at about the 1-hour & 45-minute mark in the footage embedded below, Sakurai greets the crowd. The matches included a variety of settings, including fights with items, some with teams, and some without. The event starts out with some two-on-two action. At the 3-hour & 14-minute mark, special celebrity guests show up. Smash player Nairo played a 3-versus-1 match against celebrities: WWE Superstar Ember Moon, NFL player Mike Daniels, and actress Olivia Holt.

Shortly after that is perhaps the most hype part of the event, the Grand Finals between TSM|ZeRo and Echo Fox|MKLeo. MkLeo manages to reset the bracket, playing Bayonetta at first, then sticking to Sonic. ZeRo goes between Mario and Sheik, but ultimately sticks with Sheik. It looked like he was about to lose, but in the clutch last match with everything at stake, he stays calm and earns to win — becoming champion of both of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Invitationals to date.

It’s important to listen to Sakurai at the end as well, who said that the game is under “constant balancing.” Expect lots to change, but Nintendo already gave a great showing of the next Smash game.
