Solid Snake will still be voiced by David Hayter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Snake? Answer me! Snake? Snaaaaaaake!

Metal Gear Solid fans — or at least fans of the Western releases of the series — were likely wondering something when it was revealed this morning that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would include all prior Smash characters, including Solid Snake from Super Smash Bros. Brawl… who’s voicing this upcoming version of Snake?

David Hayter voiced the character until Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, where he was unceremoniously replaced by Kiefer Sutherland (even though that was Big Boss and not Solid Snake, Hayter had still voiced an earlier version of Big Boss — Naked Snake — in Metal Gear Solid 3). Hayter’s distinctive voice work had become iconic to the character in the West (in Japan, all versions of the character are voiced by Akio Ōtsuka) and his departure was jarring for many fans.

Snake’s Smash incarnation appeared before The Phantom Pain, and included voice work from Hayter. Now with Snake’s return to Smash, does that mean Hayter is returning as well? Indeed it does. In an interview with Game Informer, Nintendo of America’s Bill Trinen and localization manager Nate Bihldorff gave a few clues as to Snake’s voice in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While it is left unclear if Hayter has done any new recording for Ultimate — or if it is simply voice material reused from Brawl — they did confirm that it will be his voice in the game. Hayter himself has also offered a short but definitive confirmation:

Snake had a significant amount of character-specific dialogue in Brawl, so it remains to be seen if that will make the transition to Ultimate. But fans of Hayter’s gravel-voiced take on Solid Snake can rest easy!

HORI has a new fight stick prototype on display at E3 2018

Here’s a peek at what HORI is preparing for the future!

We don’t know anything about it yet, except it looks intriguing… HORI has a new in-development fight stick on display at E3 2018, and it looks like they’re finally jumping on board with the easy-access open-at-will panel design used by the Mad Catz TE2, the Qanba Dragon, and the Razer Atrox/Panthera. Have a look at these pictures, snapped by Mark “MarkMan” Julio:

hori e3 2018 fight stick prototype 1
hori e3 2018 fight stick prototype 3
hori e3 2018 fight stick prototype 2

What we can see so far is that the layout is the NOIR style that HORI has been using on many of its recent fight sticks; the balltop, pushbuttons, and panel art are all new designs/colors, presuming any of that is close to retail final. The unlabeled top-panel upper controls look like they’ll offer similar functions to prior sticks — and we can see a touch pad in that area, so clearly this is a PlayStation 4 design. This stick case opens in a more unusual panel-forward motion, as opposed to all of its competitors. Also notable in the images is what looks like a SoulCalibur VI-branded RAP.N (on the shelf below), and some kind of GameCube-type controller (behind), obviously intended for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Arcade Shock also grabbed some images on the scene that show a closer look at the panel joint and the inside bed of the case:

We’ll provide more details on these controllers as we hear them!

SoulCalibur VI and Dead or Alive 6 will be on PlayStation’s E3 stream this Wednesday

Arguably the biggest upcoming fighting games at E3 2018 (that we know of) are SoulCalibur VI and Dead or Alive 6. Now, for players excited for either game who aren’t at E3, they’ll get to see more of them soon — thanks to PlayStation’s E3 stream. Sony put up their E3 stream schedule after their showcase, and it seems that both SoulCalibur VI and Dead or Alive 6 will be on the PlayStation E3 live stream this Wednesday.

Dead Or Alive 6 will be shown first at 1:30 PM Pacific. SoulCalibur VI, on the other hand, will have its time on stream at 3:15 PM PT. Both presentations will last for about 15 minutes each. Of course, for anyone at E3, both games will also be at the booths of their respective developers on the show floor.

Mian and Luong officially confirmed for SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy

A few weeks back, a leak led to the reveal of Luong as part of the cast of SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. Alongside this, we also got the hint that another character was supposed to be revealed before her. Now we know who that character is: Mian.

Both characters are have been confirmed as part of a new E3 trailer from Nintendo. We’ve already seen Luong in action in the leaked trailer — and the footage here shows more of the same. This, however, is the first time we’re seeing Mian in-game, and the video demonstrates that she still retains her command jumps and divekicks from The King of Fighters XIV .

As for her costumes, she gains an elegant (if short) Chinese-style mini dress with a half-domino mask, as well as a more formal “teacher” look with glasses. However, it seems that these don’t change depending on her moves, unlike her original costume’s mask in KOFXIV.

Check out the new trailer below:

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy launches on Switch and PlayStation 4 on September 6 in Japan, and September 7 in the West, with an arcade release sometime later.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announced for Nintendo Switch during E3 2018 Nintendo Direct, coming December 2018

Super Smash Bros. is back — in its “Ultimate” form!

IMG_8885

Nintendo announced Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during its E3 Nintendo Direct with a host of new information.

First and foremost, every single character from the entire franchise is included in the new title, this means characters like Ice Climbers, Solid Snake, Wolf, Pichu, and Young Link have returned after being missing in action for a title or two.

Most characters in the roster have also received many adjustments to their designs and movesets. Stages have been given major upgrades and additions as well, including extra hazards. New stages are also being added to represent more-recent Nintendo titles, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

“Clone” characters are now described as “Echo Fighters”. They will be signified by the epsilon symbol. Characters that fit into this mold specifically are Dark Pit and Lucina. Princess Daisy will be joining the roster as well as a new Echo Fighter of Princess Peach.

Also, for all of those amiibo lovers out there, all Super Smash Bros. series amiibo and variations of those characters will all be compatible with the new game.

Smash Bros. wouldn’t be the same without GameCube controller support so, in order to keep with tradition, the classic controller will be compatible with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — and it looks like a new edition will be sold soon as well.

IMG_8865

To conclude the presentation, the long requested character, Ridley, from the Metroid Franchise, was also announced to be joining the Super Smash Bros. pantheon as a new playable fighter, alongside the new Inkling fighter. Both will get new amiibo figures, too.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will release for Nintendo Switch on December 7, 2018, so be ready to brawl in the most comprehensive Smash title yet! Check out everything Nintendo announced for the new title in their E3 2018 video below.
