Several characters potentially leaked for Mortal Kombat 11 via Steam Database

We may have an idea of several upcoming Kombatants, thanks to a leak from Steam!

Since The Reveal in January, we’ve seen news for the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 trickle out bit by bit: Kano was recently announced at an event in Brazil, while Kabal and D’Vorah were properly revealed last week during the first edition of the Kombat Kast and an episode of Inside Xbox. Now, thanks to a list of Trophies from the Steam Database, we may have an idea of several of the upcoming Kombatants set to return to the title, as well as possible clues to the identities of additional new challengers as well.

As rooflemonger notes in his video, there are several Trophies for performing both Fatalities for each specific character. These include already-confirmed fighters like Skarlet, Baraka, D’Vorah. Raiden, Kabal, Kano, Sonya, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero, but also reveals initials for unannounced characters that are potentially returning in the newest title as follows:

  • ERR – Erron Black
  • FRO – Frost
  • JAD – Jade
  • CAS – Cassie Cage
  • KOL – Kotal Kahn
  • JAC – Jacqui Briggs (or Jackson Briggs/Jax?)
  • LIU – Liu Kang
  • KUN – Kung Lao
  • TER – The Terminator? Newcomer?
  • KOT – Possible Newcomer
  • CET – Possible Newcomer

Other Trophies potentially confirm the return of Mercies, a mechanic introduced in Mortal Kombat 3 that allowed a victorious player to revive their fallen foe with a small sliver of life to continue the battle. This was primarily done as a necessary requirement to perform an Animality once the resurrected opponent was defeated a second time, though we have nothing that indicates their specific return. Perhaps this will be used to allow a second chance to finish opponents off with a Brutality? These Trophies also confirm the return of The Krypt, with various goals to complete within it such as running five miles or spearing 100 hanging bodies. There is also one for spilling 100,000 pints of blood, in addition to completing battle tutorials, a set number of Towers, collecting 200 pieces of Gear, and playing ten “A.I. Sets.” Whether this means facing the Computer, or perhaps creating A.I. fighters and sending them out to battle for Gear, à la Injustice 2, is currently unknown.

Perhaps most interesting is that NetherRealm Studio’s Ed Boon reacted to the possible leaks on Twitter, asking Sonya on Sunday what she thought of leaks, with a GIF of her performing her Fatal Blow on Scorpion, as well as announcing that the “latest leak,” is that we won’t be throwing Blanche anymore. The old woman was a popular intractable in the Outworld Marketplace stage in Mortal Kombat XL — whom could be thrown at opponents, and could even perform Stage Brutalities when certain conditions were met — by tweeting out artwork of her in the style of official MK11 character renders.

Back in 2017 we saw an Injustice 2 base roster leak that turned out to be 100% correct, and as rooflemonger points out, the Steam Database tends to be mostly infallible, so this list of characters is looking very likely. We’ve also got another female character reveal on the horizon on this Thursday’s Kombat Kast, so we can see if this leak begins to come together. You can hear rooflemonger’s thoughts on the situation in the video below.

What are your thoughts on this potential roster list? Are you excited for these returns, or were you hoping to see someone else? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Unite to fight with JUMP FORCE’s official launch trailer

The battle for Earth is about to reach maximum intensity!

After eight months of hype following its announcement at E3 last June, it’s nearly time to unite to fight: Bandai Namco Entertainment’s massive 3V3 arena fighter — featuring some of the most legendary characters in Weekly Shonen Jump — is nearly upon us. To further prepare players for Friday’s release (or yesterday’s, if you were granted Early Access via the Ultimate Edition), Bandai Namco has released the game’s official launch trailer.

The video sees the likes of Vegeta, Rukia, Kakashi, Sanji, Asta, Deku, Luffy, Blackbeard, Frieza, Trunks, Boruto, Aizen, Ichigo, Sasuke, Naruto, Piccolo, Ryo Saeba, Kenshiro, Jotaro, DIO, Yusuke, Goku, Gon, Zoro, Pegasus Seiya, Yugi, Kenshin, and Dai unleash their spectacular signature attacks while the villainous Kane and the devious Light Yagami enact their dark plans. JUMP FORCE Director Glover narrates the beginning of the game’s story. You can see the full trailer below.

Last month at the Taipei Games Show, a Story trailer was also released, giving us further insight into Kane, Galena, and Light Yagami’s plans — which you can also check out below.

JUMP FORCE will be officially released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam on Thursday, February 14th in Japan, and worldwide this Friday, February 15th. Early access for players who purchased the Ultimate Edition began on February 12th.

Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi has departed Echo Fox

The Murderface is now a free agent!

sfv_akuma_ready_crop

Over the past few months, the once-mighty fighting game division of Echo Fox — an esports team run by retired NBA star Rick Fox, which swiftly acquired a collection of some of the best fighting game players in the world across multiple titles — has seen a massive amount of downsizing. The team saw the departures of Punk, Scar, Theo, Momochi & ChocoBlanka, Saint & JDCR, and later Justin Wong. The company even released their FGC Division Manager Boeken. Legendary Street Fighter competitor and Evo 2017 Street Fighter V Champion Tokido is now also no longer with the organization, as his contract expired last week and was not renewed.

Thankfully, the parting seems like an amicable one, as the “Murderface” thanked the organization for everything they did for him, noting that it was, “a great experience for me.” This now leaves the team’s remaining fighting game roster consisting only of SonicFox, Dekillsage, MKLeo, and Mew2King. These cuts have not even been limited to just fighting games, as Echo Fox also released their entire Gears of War team and their League of Legends head coach back in October.

This now presents an interesting opportunity for a variety of esprorts organizations, as one of the the best players to ever pick up an arcade stick has now become a free agent, and he would certainly be a massive boon to any organization he chooses to sign with. Regardless of what his future holds, all of us here at Shoryuken wish Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi all the best as he enters the next chapter of his fighting game career. You can see his tweet confirming his departure below.

Which team would you like to see Tokido get picked up by? Share your thoughts in the comments.

rooflemonger warns players of game-breaking glitches with Videl and Jiren in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Looks like it’s already time for another patch!

Last week, Dragon Ball FighterZ Season 2 kicked off with a bang, as a new balance patch was released that heavily tweaked the game’s system mechanics — and the first pair of FighterZ Pass 2 characters, Jiren and Videl, were released to much fanfare.

Unfortunately — as can be the case with new DLC characters being added to a game — it seems the new pair are already packing some nasty, literally game-breaking glitches. As rooflemonger demonstrates, it is possible for the duo of Videl and Goku to easily cause the entire game to glitch out and freeze, effectively ending the current match on the spot. To achieve this, a player must cancel Videl’s Rainbow Storm into her medium Frankensteiner special, then immediately Ultimate Z-Change to Goku’s Kaioken, performing a 2M into the Kaioken Finisher, which will be hit by Videl as she’s exiting the screen — causing the screen to glitch out, rendering the opponent completely immobile while the initiator can still move around but can’t directly interact with their foe. This definitely needs to addressed with the quickness.

Additionally, the mighty Pride Trooper from Universe 11, Jiren, also possesses a glitch that will allow him to freeze Cell (and possibly other characters) in place, allowing him to both move about freely while his foe can only wait to be hit so they can return to a normal position… but Jiren can even walk out of the screen, traveling a good distance into the darkness of the Null Realm. This phenomenon is caused by Jiren’s air 2H, which can Clash with other aerial normals, such as Cell’s j.2H. However, if you can hit it low enough to cause a trade with your foe, then you will cause them to freeze mid-air in an outstretched T pose, that can only be escaped from by the Jiren player making contact with the opponent. Thankfully, unlike the glitch with Videl and Goku, this one is much more difficult to replicate in the middle of an actual match — though it’s obviously just as unintentional — and will hopefully be addressed as well in an upcoming update. (And maybe they can give Golden Frieza his post-transformation meter gain back while they’re at it!)

You can see both videos demonstrating the glitches below.

FGC cosplayer Romanova shines a spotlight on the Lambert High School Esports Club in Suwanee, Georgia

With the continuing growth of competitive fighting games and esports in the United States and beyond, the pursuit of a career in these fields is becoming more viable every day. Even high schools such as Lambert High in Suwanee, Georgia are getting in on the action.

In this mini-documentary produced by well-known FGC cosplayer and competitor, Amanda “Romanova” Rose, she interviews a group of students from the Lambert High School Esports Club, who play competitive fighting games such as SoulCalibur VI, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and several others. In the video, they talk about how they got into competitive fighters as well as what they plan to do involving fighting games in the future, after graduation. Some of them also talk about how they balance their school life with the club activities, and what the goals of the team are in general.

I talked to Romanova about how and why she produced this video to highlight the Lambert High School Esports Club, and what the future might hold for these teens in the world of competitive gaming. You can watch the video and read the interview below.

Marcos “El Cubano Loco” Blanco: How and when did you come across this high school esports club in Suwanee?

Romanova: First of all, thank you for giving a chance to give these teens more exposure. They deserve it.

I came across the Lambert High School Esports Club by just attending my weeklies. Funny enough, my first encounter was their leader Ajax playing me at the Gwinnett Brawl weekly. He barely beat me, but popped off and I was like ‘Who is this young kid popping off like a maniac?’ He later came up and apologized for the excitement claiming he was actually a big fan of my streams and me playing DBFZ, and told me a bit about what they do (him and the team).

Their one member, Synebon, frequents my streams and was the one to officially invite me to come guest coach them. They have had a few people from our locals (like Max Blackwerk) come to give advice to help them get better at fighting games by sitting with their players individually and working on strengthening areas of their gameplay.

El Cubano Loco: Why did you choose to do this mini documentary on them in particular? What made them stand out and strike a chord with you?

Romanova: I chose to do this because there is always content being pumped out in the FGC and it’s amazing, but you don’t get to see too many of these inspiring tales. This may not inspire most people but seeing what these people were doing was so pure and heartwarming I wanted to share it with the FGC. I never had a team like this when I was younger. I know I would’ve felt so much better about being a nerd in high school if I had a group like this to kick it with for practices and gaming. I hope that it inspires other high schools to do the same. I know the other people who have come to coach them would agree also.

The way I did this all was using Twitch to raise the money to hire a videographer to come with me to interview them. I wanted it to be grassroots, but also good quality video. I also learned more about them while doing this doc, which made me end up including Ajax’s father in the video as well. I thought one of the most heartwarming things was seeing his dad say how his son was into esports so he ended up working on fight sticks and arcade cabs instead of cars with him and wouldn’t have it any other way. I really hope for the parents out there who see this video see how much it means to their children when they can support the hobbies their kids want to partake in, like gaming.

El Cubano Loco: Do you have any projects planned with them in the future? If so, what are they exactly?

Romanova: I do not currently have any future projects planned with them, but one big thing I’d love to do is this: some of them graduate next year, and it would be cool to raise money and send two of them to Evo next year if we could get a project going for it and to film their experience at Evo, since it will be their first time at an event of that grandeur. Another thing I’d love to do would be to send them to Combo Breaker, one of my personal favorite FGC events.

El Cubano Loco: Do these kids plan to grow their club into something bigger, and maybe branch out to compete at majors at some point as they mature?

Romanova: I think some of them want to continue to support each other even after they become alumni to the club. I really hope to see them come more often with time to the monthlies and weeklies as well. I see a lot of potential in them to grow as fighting game players as do my fellow players from the local scene here. I think the future looks bright for this group of teens.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Jotaro Kujo and DIO confirmed for JUMP FORCE; Base roster is now complete

JUMP FORCE finally gets Bizarre!

With Bandai Namco Entertainment’s massive 3V3 arena fighter JUMP FORCE set to release in a matter of days, it was time to finally pull back the curtain on a much-requested pair of beloved Shonen Jump characters that have appeared to close out the game’s launch cast. The main protagonist and antagonist of Hirohiko Araki’s Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro Kujo and the villainous DIO, have finally stepped into the JUMP FORCE ring.

Wielding their iconic Stands, Star Platinum and The World, respectively, Jotaro batters foes with his signature barrage of rapid-fire punches, the Star Finger, and what appears to be his time stop as his Ultimate. DIO also battles in a similar melee style (they are both close-range Stands, after all), while mixing in The World’s ability to stop time, the vampire’s ability to drain the blood of his enemies, as well as his iconic knife barrage and infamous Road Roller to squash his adversaries in style.

It seems that these legendary Stand users will close out the game’s base roster of characters, as Bandai Namco Entertainment tweeted that there are no more fighters left to be revealed. However, there will be nine additional DLC characters released post-launch via a Season Pass.  You can see the bizarre reveal trailer below.

This brings our final base roster count to 42 playable characters from 16 Weekly Shonen Jump series, including:

  • Dragon Ball’s Son Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Perfect Cell, Piccolo, and Trunks,
  • Naruto’s Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, Gaara, and Kaguya Ootsutsuki

IGN also released some gameplay, featuring Jotaro, Deku, and Asta battling DIO, Kaguya, and Boruto.

A character reveal trailer for Boruto, Dai, Gaara, Kakashi, and Kaguya also recently dropped.

Cyborg Raidou confirmed for Dead or Alive 6

The Regeneration of Brutality begins!

With the release of Dead or Alive 6 fast approaching, Koei Tecmo Games and Team NINJA have revealed that series veteran Cyborg Raidou will be returning to the latest installment of the franchise. The original antagonist of the DOA franchise, Raidou was thought to have perished following the conclusion of the original DEAD OR ALIVE tournament, but his body was recovered by DOATEC — who, using experimental biotechnology, revived him as a mindless cyborg who was stronger than ever, and returned in Dead or Alive 5: Last Round. You can see his gameplay trailer — where he battles Hayate — below.

His trailer description reads: “With Mugen Tenshin Ninjutsu as a base, he uses his mimicry skills to copy various powerful moves of other styles as well. He favors a power-focused fighting style, making use of his colossal physique, using both moves stolen from others, and his own, such as the Tenho-Gorai-Sho and the Rekku-Jinraisatsu … without a mind of his own, he has now devolved into a madman who only craves strength and destruction.”

Cyborg Raidou joins Kasumi, Hayate, Ayane, Ryu Hayabusa, Bass and Tina Armstrong, Bayman, Brad Wong, Christie, Eliot, Helena Douglas, Hitomi, Honoka, Jann Lee, Kokoro, Mila, Leifang, La Mariposa, Marie Rose, Rig, Zach, newcomers Diego and NiCO, as well as pre-order DLC characters Nyotengu and Phase-4, bringing the current roster up to 26 characters, with more to be added as DLC.

Dead or Alive 6 will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam on Friday, March 1st, 2019 — with regular, digital, and digital deluxe editions.

Kabal and D’Vorah revealed for Mortal Kombat 11; Another female character to be shown on next Thursday’s Kombat Kast

The hooksword-weilding Black Dragon and Kytin Queen return to Kombat!

After a brief delay due to the Polar Vortex 2019 placing Chicago under literal sub-zero temperatures, the first Kombat Kast for Mortal Kombat 11 took place yesterday. Following a not-so-subtle tease at The Reveal last month, the hooksword-weilding Black Dragon warrior Kabal was finally revealed to be playable in Mortal Kombat 11 after missing out on Mortal Kombat XL.

The MK3 veteran has been slightly retooled to have his normals and strings focus more on his iconic hookswords than ever before, giving Kabal great reach and large footsie buttons to control neutral, in a similar vein to Skarlet. His low buzzsaws have returned, with the addition of an aerial version that replaces his iconic Gas Blasts (which have been removed in favor of Kabal utilizing a stationary cloud of gas that will do damage over time to his foes as long as they are standing in it, and will also disable their ability to jump). The former police officer’s Nomad Dash also returns granting him a rare meter less combo starter, that should prove very potent in the competitive meta. His fatality is also fittingly gruesome, as Kabal uses his speed to drag his opponent across the floor, ripping their face off before shredding them with his blades. You can see his full trailer, as well as the full Kombat Kast breakdown which also featured a look at Geras, below. It was also announced that a new female combatant will be revealed on the Kombat Kast next Thursday, February 14th, at 3:00 PM CT. Personally, I expect to see a member of the Edenian trio of Kitana, Mileena, or Jade, but we’ll find out together in eight days.

Shortly after the Kombat Kast’s conclusion, it was revealed on Inside Xbox that the female Kytin D’Vorah would be returning from Mortal Kombat XL, sporting a new look that gives an ever more insect-like appearance. Ed Boon has confirmed she will not be the female shown on the next Kombat Kast, but you can view her announcement below. Kabal and D’Vorah join Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Skarlet, Baraka, Kano, and newcomer Geras, bringing the current known roster up to 10.

Mortal Kombat 11 will be released worldwide for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on April 23rd. However the European Switch version has been delayed until May 10th. An online beta will also be held sometime in March.
