Character Creation Mode is confirmed to return in SoulCalibur VI by the game’s producer Motohiro Okubo

“Character creation is almost vital to the Souls series and you can expect it come back in SoulCalibur VI.”

E3 2018 has been a very exciting time for SoulCalibur VI fans, even if the game didn’t get time on the major stage. What’s more important for the Souls aficionados is gameplay footage of Geralt and many other newly-announced characters, like Taki and Maxi. There’s more gameplay, as well as some exciting news coming from the official Twitch channel — which featured an interview with the game’s producer, Motohiro Okubo.

Near the end of the gameplay demo and interview, Okubo was asked about character creation mode, and though he was a little tentative about making an official statement, he said that we can “expect it to come back” in the newest installment of the series. However, either Okubo can’t talk about what it looks like yet, or the mode is far from realization. Okubo is staying tight-lipped so far about all the other single-player modes in the game, but this should be big news for those who enjoyed creating both stylish and wacky fighters in the previous games.

Check out the interview below with more gameplay from the latest build of SoulCalibur VI:

Catch some footage of Dead or Alive 6 in action from IGN

Following up on their preview coverage of Dead or Alive 6, IGN featured the game, alongside producer and director Yohei Shimbori on IGN Live.

On the show, they covered a lot of the topics first covered in their preview: talking to Shimbori about the game’s bold new direction, and the new gameplay features being added. More interesting, however, was the footage on display, which was a combination of bits of some sort of tutorial mode, and an actual match cut together.

The tutorial bit seems to show tutorial prompts happening in the middle of a match. Meanwhile the gameplay does its best to show off some of the new systems, including the meter-powered ones that DOA6 is introducing.

Dead or Alive 6 is launching sometime in early 2019.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tutorial roundup — Parries & taunts

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection has just released, and I’ve been getting endless requests to do some tutorials for my area of expertise: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Despite being almost twenty years-old, 3rd Strike is probably more popular now than it has ever been in the past — largely due to the massive influx of new players since 2008, as well as its cult following, and its endurance in Japanese arcades. In light of the new release, I’ve prepared a few guides to help new players get into the old engine.

The first of my two guides is a tutorial on parries. Parries are the signature mechanic of the SFIII series, and they add an enormous amount of depth to the game despite being very simple to understand and use on the surface. Parries lead to a lot of extremely interesting scenarios that aren’t really possible (or frequent) in other Street Fighter games, so I wanted to help players learn how to use them properly. I know a lot of new players are turned off by parries, since they often magnify the skill gap between new and longtime players, but despite their reputation they’re really not that hard to use well. Additionally, they give SFIII a very high skill ceiling, which means players will always have room to further develop, even two decades after the game’s release.

My other guide is on “Personal Actions”, i.e. taunts. Unlike other Street Fighter titles, all taunts in Street Fighter III have practical effects which enhance the way each character plays. Some taunts are so useful that they form the core of how the character plays. Others are completely unusable in any competitive scenario! It’s good to know the effects of one’s own taunt, plus one’s opponents’ taunts, so this video should be quite helpful for all prospective SFIII players. I tried to focus on the most practical components of each.

I’ve got many other Street Fighter III primers in the works, so subscribe to the ShoryukenTube YouTube channel if you don’t want to miss out!

Bandai Namco’s upcoming “Jump Force” will be a 3-versus-3 tag team arena fighter

Who’s on your Jump “dream team”?

Bandai Namco’s latest fighting project, just announced at E3, is Jump Force; while the reveal trailer was tantalizing, it didn’t tell us much about what exactly the game was. We now know via press release that Jump Force will be a tag-team based arena brawler! More details, according to Bandai Namco:

Featuring the world’s most popular and classic manga/anime franchises including DRAGON BALL Z®, ONE PIECE®, NARUTO®, and many others, players will be able to create their three-character manga/anime dream tag team and take them into battle in hyper-stylish arena brawls set against backdrops of famous landmarks around the world including New York City’s Times Square and the Matterhorn in the Alps. Utilizing Unreal Engine® 4, JUMP FORCE brings these titans of Japanese pop culture to life for the first time ever in stunning realistic detail.

“With JUMP FORCE, we are thrilled to bring to life Shueisha’s deep catalogue of beloved franchises that has produced some of the most popular pop culture characters to ever come from Japan,” said Eric Hartness, Vice President of Marketing for BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. “JUMP FORCE gives fans of manga and anime a dream opportunity to see their favorite heroes come to life in our world in a globetrotting adventure filled with explosive battles of epic proportions.”

Jump Force is in-development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. So, get ready to take three of your manga favorites — such as Naruto, Luffy, Goku, Freiza, Light Yagami and Ryuk, for starters — into battle sometime in 2019. Here’s that reveal trailer again to help get you hyped up:

Dead or Alive 6’s producer and director Yohei Shimbori wants the game to be “fierce” and “cooler”

After years working under other producers, Team NINJA’s Yohei Shimbori is finally at the helm of his own Dead or Alive game. Famitsu recently caught up with Shimbori, who serves as both producer and director of Dead or Alive 6, giving him a chance to talk about the game.

One of the big differences in Dead or Alive 6 from older titles a change in theme: toning down the fan-service while going for a more gritty feel. According to Shimbori, while the previous game had the theme of “fighting entertainment”, the theme for DOA6 is “fierce”. One way they’re trying to express this is with showing the damage on the characters, including the girls — something that he says was “taboo” — on their bodies and faces, and not just on their clothing.

doa6_kasumi_fierce_famitsuAdding to this is the change in generation and more powerful hardware. Shimbori states that he wanted the characters’ in-game models to look more realistic this time, with better shadows, sweat, wrinkles, etc. As part of this, they have abandoned the “soft engine” that was added to the PS4 and Xbox One ports of Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, instead they’ve created a new system just for DOA6. Of course, all this will work in 4K.

One of the big topics relating to the game’s change of direction is the reduction of fan-service. According to Shimbori, this was in part due to what people were telling him when attended Evo 2017. People mentioned that playing the game felt “embarrassing” at times, and that they wanted him to make something “cooler”.

With this, the main focus on designing the female characters is now “coolness” whereas the focus used to be on “cuteness”. He likens this to the change seen in American action movies, where it used to be that female characters were solely there for sex appeal, to now being depicted as tough and cool.

In addition to these, Shimbori talks about the actual gameplay itself: Regarding the new “Break Gauge”, Shimbori recalls that the team once stated that the series would never gain meter-powered mechanics. However, he decided to “break” with that with the new mechanics.

That said, they’re not breaking with everything introduced in the previous games. As with Dead or Alive 5, the game’s training mode will still feature frame data and the other tools players are used to. On top of this, Shimbori wants to figure out more ways for beginners to learn the game. Specifically, he believes the problem of fighting games is how to create an environment where beginners can practice and train, outside of the usual practice and tutorial modes. He wants to make a way that beginners can learn the system while still playing and enjoying the game.

Of course, they cover a lot more in the actual interview. Those interested can check it out over at Famitsu, or read the machine-translated version over at Free Step Dodge.

View the first gameplay of SoulCalibur VI’s guest character Geralt the Witcher, and other new characters

E3 is underway, and with it there’s a treat for SoulCalibur VI fans. We finally have the opportunity to view the fabled Geralt of Rivia in action (other than the reveal trailer). IGN had the opportunity to interview the game’s producer, Motohiro Okubo, as well as feature the game’s guest character in actual gameplay.

Perhaps the first noticeable thing when viewing the footage — embedded below — is a completely rehashed UI in comparison to the build we have previously seen. The colors are crisper and brighter, and the various gauges are overall more readable. The new ship port stage is featured. Geralt fights Kilik at first, showcasing some moves. The next match features a Geralt mirror match at his home stage, Kaer Mohen. There’s an additional new stage shown in a match with Xianghua. Around the 56-minute mark, Siegfried shows up, another character that we haven’t seen in play yet. Geralt also faces Nightmare in another new stage.

After the break, at the 1:01 hour mark, Maxi fights against Zasalamel at a previously-unrevealed desert background. We also get a first look at Taki and Ivy in subsequent matches.

There’s a ton of new things to check out in this new build. Check out the matches below, while listening to a translated interview with Okubo.
