Naruto, Goku, Frieza, Luffy and others collide in multi-franchise crossover “Jump Force”

It seems like BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is not the recent game with colliding universes. During the Microsoft E3 conference, the company presented Jump Force, a new 3D brawler coming in 2019.

The trailer presents the world’s most famous shinobi, Naruto, Luffy from One Piece, as well as Frieza and Goku from Dragon Ball Z colliding in battle in what looks like New York City. We see some early in-game shots, but at this stage it’s unclear exactly what exact form the gameplay will take, or if the title will be 1-on-1 or team-based.

The end of the trailer teases Light Yagami and Ryuk from Death Note. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty hype about either Light brawling with his fists, or using Ryuk like its his Persona, and then writing down Naruto’s name in his notebook as a finishing move…

The game uses Unreal Engine and is developed in collaboration between Bandai Namco and Spike Chunsoft. Expect more details to surface soon.

Twin-stick controller for Toaru Majutsu no VIRTUAL-ON possibly coming to PlayStation 4

While Toaru Majutsu no VIRTUAL-ON represented something of a rebirth for the series on consoles, for some core players, the release was missing something — a proper twin-stick controller.

Now, it seems that that may change. Tanita has announced that they are considering releasing a twin-stick controller specifically for Toaru Majutsu no VIRTUAL-ON.

The so called “Twin-Stick Project” aims to create a PlayStation 4 controller that mimics the original twin-stick setup from the original VIRTUAL-ON arcade machines. The new twin-sticks are said to be able to work in 8 directions, instead of the 4 of the originals. Additionally, Tanita says that they want to make the stick’s internals as easy to customize and repair as possible.

Originally a manufacturer of “health machines”, the Twin-Stick Project is Tanita’s first foray into the world of video game accessories. As part of this, Sega themselves will be assisting them with the creation of the twin-stick, should production actually commence.

Learn the basics of Grøh, SoulCalibur VI’s newest character

Grøh is SoulCalibur VI‘s new and original character, and thus, no one has much information on him yet. Other then having played him at certain events, knowledge from past games won’t help understanding him. The assassin stands out with an aesthetic that seems closer to anime games, giving him a unique and edgier flair than most of the other “classic” fighters. Hayate gathered information on Grøh and prepared a new breakdown video that explains how this character functions.

Starting with some first impressions, Hayate judges Grøh as a fighter who has a good balance of speed and range, paired with great mobility. Several of his pokes go into his stance, Innocent Draw, which is key to his gameplay. 66K is a very good launcher which evades high-level attacks and then jumps up in the air. You can transition into his stance by holding forward with certain attacks. According to Hayate, the stance feels very “complete.” Some attacks from Innocent Draw will loop, keeping the character in the stance.

In Soul Charge, Grøh has access to some additional moves during the stance, including some teleporting strikes. Grøh can play a good poking game at range and mix-up the opponent when he’s close. In Soul Charge, his mobility gets to crazy levels, since he can appear immediately at certain spots and attack. As for weaknesses, he isn’t as good at punishing blocks, and he needs to take some risks.

If you’re considering another character for SoulCalibur VI, check out Hayate’s Kilik overview as well.

Nicalis shares interview with Studio Saizensen, developers of “Blade Strangers”

Nicalis’s Blade Strangers has emerged as a very interesting underdog in the fighting game landscape. The new 2D fighter gained big media attention with cross-over character reveals from popular game series like Shovel Knight, Cave Story, The Binding of Isaac, and more.

In Blade Strangers case, though, Nicalis is just the publisher — the developer is Studio Saizensen, likely best known for the RPG series Code of Princess, and only barely known for their one fighting game, Blade Arcus. Both Nicalis and Studio Saizensen are confident in their collaboration, though, and have released an interview on Nicalis’s blog detailing Studio Saizensen’s love affair with the Fighting Game genre — and how criticism received from Blade Arcus helped shape the development of Blade Strangers.  Director Toshinobu Kondo recalls:

“I have great memories of the all-nighter versus tournaments that I used to run every weekend at my home! Also, winning third place in the official World Heroes Tournament, and going all the way up to Rank 20 in Street Fighter IV in the Asia region as Ken; those are both fond memories, too.”

You can read the full interview over on Nicalis’s blog.

Recently announced Dead or Alive 6 will have a resource bar and a new “Special” attack button

Dead or Alive 6 will be more accessible to newcomers but still in-depth and with a decreased focus on… fan-service?

Seemingly out of nowhere, Team Ninja announced a new title in the Dead or Alive series — which, for a bit was looking… well, either dead or alive. The sixth iteration is looking to achieve a difficult balance: both satisfy long-time veterans and those who take fighting games very seriously, as well as appeal to a more casual audience and even to those who may have been turned off by its old aesthetic.

The report from IGN’s website goes in-depth with producer and director Yohei Shimbori; IGN has had a chance to play the game, and they report that it’s remarkably faithful to the older entries of the series. And yet, a big addition to the control scheme is the Special button, which executes new mechanics with just that — a press of a single button (and some directional inputs). Pressing the trigger alone unleashes a new Fatal Rush, which is a “powerful combo attack,” done by just mashing the button. (Thought there are drawbacks to it; it can be dodged or spaced out.)

More importantly, though, there is a new Break Gauge, basically a super meter, which is new territory to the DOA series. It fills up from landing hits or blocking, and pressing forward with the Special button executes a Break Blow, an animated and flashy attack. Pressing back and the Special button is a defensive counter technique, Break Hold, that works against any attack levels.

The trailer shows off high-fidelity graphics that are more realistic than ever before in the series. Running with that, IGN addressed the elephant in the room: what about the bodacious babes of DOA?

“We wanted to make a more cool and mature Dead or Alive this time, and to that end, we made a conscious decision to make the characters less sexualized,” Shimbori told IGN during the preview.

“The female characters are still attractive, as are the men, but first and foremost they are fighters,” Yutaka Saito, the game’s art director, told IGN.

What’s your first impression of Dead or Alive 6? Let us know in the comments and check out the DOA 6 reveal trailer.

Tachikawa talks about Dragon Ball FighterZ, anime waifus, Ramune candy, the FPS genre, and more in this intriguing interview with BornFree

Detonation Gaming’s Tachikawa Toru has made quite the splash in the fighting game community in the last couple of years. He started making his mark in Street Fighter V playing Dhalsim and Ibuki in Season 2, and now most recently in Season 3, doing damage with Kolin in this year’s Capcom Pro Tour. Most recently, Tachikawa has been making new waves in Dragon Ball FighterZ — placing third at Stunfest 2018 and 25th at Combo Breaker 2018.

As it turns out in this interview with BornFree, Tachikawa is a huge Dragon Ball fan — even so far as to calling out his fellow Japanese comrade Moke on his knowledge of the franchise! Outside of talking about DBFZ, some unexpected topics that come up are Tachikawa’s passion for anime “waifus”, Ramune candy that apparently helps him focus more in the game (as per the translator’s confused expression, Ramune is widely known only as Japanese soda, not candy), and his surprising revelation that he likes to play first-person shooters. All this is discussed and then some in the video below — which is over an hour long.
