This Japanese BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle system primer video covers everything you need to know

The BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle beta is upon us; those who pre-order are able to play the game today. For some, it will be the first time they had a chance to play the tag crossover game, even though it has been available at certain GameStop stores and events. To that end, Curry Roo has offered an excellent system overview of the game.

Although it’s in Japanese, it’s still an excellent system primer that goes over all the general mechanics of the game. The overview begins with an explanation of movement. Note that pressing forward dashes automatically. We switch to the main buttons, which are an ABCD system. A and B attacks can autocombo, and C is the Crash Assault overhead strike. The D button tags the partner.

If you’re more curious about partner attacks, that’s the P button (R1 on controllers). Everyone has three different assist attacks, which can be done by combining P with either direction or none. BBTAG has a few system mechanics that utilized by pressing two buttons at once. Throw by pressing B+C, and A+D is a universal Dragon Punch move, which can be done in the air as well as in combos. Note that if the opponent punishes your DP, you won’t be able to use a partner assist to bust you out.

As for special moves, 236 or 214 with A and B cover most inputs in the game. Some characters have 22 inputs as well. Pressing C unleashes the EX version of the special move which costs one bar. Super moves are done similarly but with B+C inputs instead. By simply pressing P during a super of the main character, the next character will tag in and perform their Distortion Drive. There’s no traditional Bursting in the game, however, in certain situations, your partner can step in to save your character if you press P+D.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle pre-orders are live today.

Celebrate Goku Day with in-game gifts for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball FighterZ

Until we meet again — here’s some cool stuff!

While there may be some contention out there for what day today is exactly, Bandai Namco is giving away in-game items for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball FighterZ in honor of Goku day, a nationally recognized holiday in Japan.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 players will receive double XP throughout the duration of the event alongside Goku’s Jacket and 59 TP medals once the event is over. Combined with the 40 Ton Weights Super Soul, which doubles the amount of XP gained, this is the perfect opportunity to level up your custom characters.

Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s reward is a bit smaller, but still neat. Simply logging into the game grants the “Timeless Legend” title for your Player Card. While certainly cool, perhaps a special lobby avatar or character color for Goku would have been more exciting. That being said, a gift is a gift, and that’s nice enough in itself.

You may be wondering why May 9, also known as Piccolo day, was chosen for Goku day. The reasoning is actually quite straightforward. In Japanese, Go means 5 and Ku means 9. Go figure! Act fast, because these gifts are more than likely only available today.

Oh yeah, and I guess its also Krillin day too, so don’t forget about him!

Blade Strangers reveals the addition of Cave Story’s Quote to roster

Nicalis isn’t wasting any time on character reveals for their 2D crossover fighter Blade Strangers. Even though the bombshell of Gunvolt’s announcement was just dropped yesterday, there’s already has a new character reveal to talk about — Cave Story‘s Quote.

Quote will be joining fellow Cave Story protagonist Curly Brace, who was announced in the original reveal of Blade Strangers. His reveal trailer in the above tweet shows off his projectile, supers, combos, and — interestingly enough — a jump-canceled overhead reset.

Blade Strangers launches on Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC this summer.

Capcom details the Training and Versus modes in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Capcom’s 30th birthday present for their flagship fighting franchise, is almost here. With the game hitting soon, the company has released a few more details on the games’ training and versus modes.

In a new post over on Capcom-Unity, the nitty-gritty of the Collection’s Training and Versus modes are laid out. One interesting thing with the latter is that Versus mode encompasses all titles at once in one mode; selecting which game to play is simply just another step in the setup process.

Speaking of stages, each stage will now detail which characters debuted in said stage when being selected.

As for training mode, this will apparently be available for the four games that will have online play – Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. The training modes for these games will come with all the bells and whistles you’d expect such as dummy control, damage display, and input display.

Unfortunately, it seems that no such mode will be available for the games not also available to play online. The new modes are late additions to the title, and will be provided for download via a day one patch.

The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch on May 29.

Capcom plans to release two major titles before March next year, will look at dormant IPs and remakes

Capcom recently released their financial results presentation for the 2017 fiscal year (April 2017 to March 2018). While most of the data didn’t really contain any surprises, they did include some things that hint at their plans for the near future.

As part of the presentation, Capcom has promised to release two major titles by March 31, 2019. Now, while these may not necessarily be fighting games, it’s hard not to consider the possibility with how big a role the company plays in the genre.

In addition to this, however, they’ve also stated that they plan to look at their dormant IPs and possibly release remakes. This may be the more exciting prospect for fighting game fans. Capcom has a number of dormant fighting game IPs — such as Darkstalkers and Rival Schools — that still have dedicated fan bases to this day. It is possible one of these IPs could be brought back, especially considering that there are still people within Capcom who would love to do so.

Dial your opponent’s number with these 20 Tekken 7 Noctis tips and tricks

Noctis was released not too long ago, so although many players have grasped his general gameplay flow, it’s time to dig a little bit deeper. LiangHuBBB has been hard at work creating a robust tutorial video that covers setups and combos with the Final Fantasy XV protagonist.

The video starts out by pointing out safe moves on block, f, f+1+2 and u/f+1. They’re easy ways to catch the opponent pressing buttons and will start a combo on counter-hit. Another good move to use in pressure is wr 1+2, which is a launcher that’s +11 frames on block. It’s a little slow to come out, but it avoids sweeps. Switch things up with d/b+1+2, which is very negative on block (-16), but it causes significant pushback, which may cause the opponent to whiff their punish.

Check out the rest of the tips in the video below, which are demonstrated in gameplay demos in between the text explanations.

Tune up your ninjutsu skills with this Bang Shishigami combo tutorial video

Have no fear, for the Japanese ninja, Bang Shishigami is here! Bang is one of the original BlazBlue characters, hailing all the way from 2008’s Calamity Trigger. Though he isn’t a very popular character in Central Fiction, he still remains a unique and complex character with very cool ninja tricks.

Hentaitop is back with a new combo collections video covering Bang. As usual, their videos start out with a few informative screens that explain his moves. There are a few layers to him involving resources. He gains Seals with his Drive, which unlock special skills for his Overdrive as well as give him access to a new Distortion Drive should he have all of them. He spends Nails whenever he uses different types of projectiles either for neutral or in combos. The video starts out with more basic combos that take advantage of such resources. The variety of combos covers midscreen and corner techniques from many starters, including throw. And as always, the latter combos in video increase in complexity and incorporate Overdrive and Rapid Cancels.

Check it out below, and also take a look at Hibiki CF combos for different style of ninjutsu.

Learn to play with a Progressive Mentality in Tekken 7 with PepperBeef2Spicy

Everyone suffers from plateauing when learning a new fighting game. When this happens, it can be difficult to figure out how to progress in your learning. This is particularly true in Tekken 7, a game with years of legacy systems — it can be overwhelming just to know where to start learning when there’s so many things to catch up on.

It’s important to note that all players of all levels experience this. PepperBeef2Spicy, an accomplished Tekken tournament player, admits as much — progressing and improving isn’t a magic change that occurs overnight, but rather a gradual shift in how you approach thinking about your gameplay. In this video, he goes over how he managed to adopt this mindset to improve — and how you can too.
