Bandai Namco is ending Tekken-Net service for vanilla Tekken 7 in arcades

When Tekken 7 first launched in arcades, it came with Bandai Namco’s Tekken-Net service, first pioneered with Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Now, Bandai Namco has announced that they are ending the service for Tekken 7 in arcades on May 31, 2018.

Now, before anyone panics, take note that this is only for the “vanilla” version of Tekken 7 in arcades. For those who may not already know, Tekken 7 in arcades has received an updated version called Tekken 7 Fated Retribution. It’s this latter version that the home versions are based on, and this arcade version will still continue on the service.

The only arcade machines affected will be those who are running the original release of Tekken 7 that haven’t been updated to Fated Retribution. Tekken-Net service for these will end at exactly 7:00 a.m. Japan Time on May 31. These cabinets will no longer receive have access to online matchmaking, Banapassport card functionality, as well as Tekken-Net online website services. All such cabinets can then be identified by the game displaying the version number “X03” on the title screen.

Indie horror fighting game Omen of Sorrow is getting a physical release

AOne Games just recently released a new trailer for their upcoming horror-themed fighter Omen of Sorrow. While the trailer mostly covers a bit of gameplay and features, it also announces something that some people might not have expected from an indie fighter — a physical release!

That’s right, Omen of Sorrow is getting a physical release on PlayStation 4 thanks to Soedesco. Additionally, it seems that this isn’t just a limited collector’s release, unlike many other physical releases of indie games.

While indie games tend to be released purely in digital form, the dedicated player bases these attract can often justify the investment in a physical release. Prior to this, Lab Zero Games’s Skullgirls also got a limited run physical release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, thanks to Limited Run Games.

The rest of the trailer below covers the game’s other features — including its 12-character base roster, and its GGPO-based online netcode.

Omen of Sorrow is set to release on PlayStation 4 sometime later this year.

Registration for Battle Arena Melbourne 10, a Tekken World Tour Master event, is now open

It’s spring once again, this means that many of the various competitive fighting game tours are starting to kick off. One such tour is the Tekken World Tour, which will be having one of its Master events next month at Battle Arena Melbourne 10.

For those interested in joining, registration for Battle Arena Melbourne 10 is now open. Being a Master event in the Tekken World Tour, the top 32 placers in the Tekken 7 tournament will receive ranking points, with the top 16 receiving more points than they would in a Tekken World Tour Challenger event.

In addition to this, Battle Arena Melbourne is also a Capcom Pro Tour ranking event, with the top 8 receiving points towards a possible slot at Capcom Cup later this year.

Other games at the event include Dragon Ball FighterZ, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round,  Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, Injustice 2, Rivals of Aether, as well as the Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod Project M, and more.

Battle Arena Melbourne 10 will be taking place from May 18 to 20, 2018 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in Melbourne, Victoria. Interested players can now register over on smash.gg.

Skullgirls, Fate/stay night, Avatar? – Arc System Works asks what other series players would love to see added to BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

Despite only having BlazBlue in the title, Arc System Works’ BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle actually combines a number of franchises into one tag team fighting game. In addition to the titular series, it also has characters from Persona 4 Arena, Under Night In-Birth EXE:Late, as well as the anime series RWBY.

That said, for some players, that just might not be enough, and they might want characters from other series to join in as well! That was part of the focus of a recent Facebook Live stream by Arc System Works from Sakuracon 2018. During the stream, Arc System Works America’s president asked some fans about what characters and franchises they’d like to see added into the game, stating that ArcSys is listening to fans’ tweets and suggestions.

The interesting thing, however, involves the franchises that they did mention. One of these was none other than Skullgirls. The Marvel-esque tag-team fighter has become a cult favorite in the fighting game community, and ArcSys says that it being added into BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle could be a possibility, thanks to the fact that ArcSys publishes the game in Japan.

Another popular series mentioned was Fate/stay night series. This series’ sister franchise from Type-Moon, Tsukihime, already has a fighting game franchise in Melty Blood, however, Fate hasn’t really hit it big in fighting games yet, outside of a couple of spin-off titles.

Finally, they also mentioned Nickelodeon’s Avatar: the Last Airbender. This series (and its sequel The Legend of Korra) is such a ripe series for creating a fighting game from that it’s surprising that no one has made one yet. ArcSys stated that getting this series into the game is their big “pie in the sky”, but that it would be amazing if it ever did happen.

In addition to this, they also talked about a few other things, including how this would be the first time Under Night characters would receive English voices, and more.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is set to launch on PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC on May 31 in Japan, June 5 in North America, with a European release following soon after.

VesperArcade breaks down NorCal Regionals 2018’s stacked Street Fighter V tournament

For the people that made it out to NorCal Regionals, the keyword was torture. The Capcom Pro Tour premier stop featured one of the deadliest brackets, with many killers pushed out of the picture in pools. It also looked to set the picture for the competitive tier list, with far fewer characters making it than Final Round‘s top 8.

VesperArcade discusses all of this and more, including highlights of some of the best matches of the weekend. He also goes over the upcoming mid-season patch, which has a possibility of flipping everything on its head.

First US tournament in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle provides thrills at Anime Ascension 2018

The time has come to see how BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle fares in a tournament setting. Anime Ascension provided an open weekend for players to try out the upcoming game. Even more attractive for some is the fact that it’s the English version of the game, with new English voice dubbing.

Level Up Live streamed the action, and the below clip has close to two hours of the tournament that took place during the event. Several players have already found their way in the game, figuring out the general flow of assist combos and neutral. There’s a good variety of characters as well. This was a tag, single-elimination tournament, so it actually consisted of pairs of players. Team Big Bois stood out in particular, and one of the members who figured out some really good synergy between his characters. Who knew that two huge grapplers, Tager and Waldstein, would be a good combo?! Go figure.

Dragon Ball FighterZ has a “big lead” in registration numbers over the other titles at Evolution 2018

The time for Evolution 2018 is slowly drawing near… Early-bird registration time has passed, and with that, Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar has taken the time to provide us with a little bit of a glimpse into the numbers. Mr. Wizard tweeted out an updated list that shows which of the Evolution 2018 main stage games have the highest number of registrants, and the results may — or may not — be surprising to you.

Though we don’t have specific numbers yet, and the results are far from final, it looks like Dragon Ball FighterZ is still paving the way to the lead — beating Capcom’s Street Fighter V, which had over 5,000 entrants in 2016, and about half as many in 2017. According to the tweet, the current ranking is as following:

  1. Dragon Ball FighterZ
  2. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
  3. Tekken 7
  4. Super Smash Bros. Melee
  5. Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U
  6. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

It’s worth noting this ranking is the same as the first update on registration Mr. Wizard provided, aside from the note on DBFZ’s larger lead. What do you think? Street Fighter V servers down form maintenance today, adding new balance patch and Darkstalkers crossover costumes

New costumes — and new gameplay changes — are arriving today!

New things are coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, so naturally we get to take a break from online access for a server maintenance period today: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT.

After the maintenance window, we’ll see the addition of three premium Darkstalkers costumes to the Shop for Urien, Juri, and Menat — and more significantly, a new balance patch that will take us into Season 3.5 with its myriad changes to the game.

Catch high-level Super Street Fighter II Turbo matches from this recent GameSpot Versus team tournament

The old adage is that any player on a Super Street Fighter II Turbo cabinet in Japan is a secret killer. That can’t be proven any more true than when we see footage from Japanese competitions, and even names that are unrecognizable showcase above-the-rim talent.

This recent team tournament from GameSpot Versus shows just that: with many unknown names lurking in the teams, they show that they are all equal threats. We also see legendary O.Chun player Jenety go on a tear, taking out player after player.

Sailor Pluto is easily one of the bottom tier characters of Sailor Moon S. However, this game is less about the tiers and more about how you use your characters… even the worst character in this game can take tournament sets if used properly.
