The SRK Rollback: Best of March 23-29, 2018

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from March 23 to March 29, 2018!

Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra, Editor-in-Chief:

Frame 1:
BCF5 TWITCH FEATURE 750x400Body Count Fighting presents BCF5 — new Title & Feature matches in Dragon Ball FighterZ, Street Fighter V, & Tekken 7 — on April 7th

Body Count Fighting keeps the action coming with another big event for early April, now with even more DBFZ. Don’t miss it!

Frame 2:
darkstalkers costume sfv ae menat crop 750x400Darkstalkers premium costumes arriving for Menat, Juri, and Urien in Street Fighter V next week

While the costumes for Menat and Urien are quite impressive, the more popular talking point seems to be how the Lilith costume alters Juri’s prominent… assets. (Ironic, if you remember Abigail’s character story!)

Frame 3:
animevo 2018AnimEVO announces 19 games for this year’s massive Evo 2018 side tournament

With this massive lineup of great titles — and possibly more to come — there’s a side tournament for everyone this year!

Frame 4:

Frame 1:
tekken_7_x_tetsuya_naito
Tranquilo! Assen na yo! Namco has a new Tekken 7 x New Japan Pro Wrestling collaboration, featuring Tetsuya Naito

Someone in the comments suggested a future Naito DLC outfit for Devil Jin and giving him a supernatural Destino. I have become a lost soul, unable to think of anything else until this happens.

Frame 2:
sfv karin victory
Victor “Punk” Woodley joins the Echo Fox team

I had suspected there were more details missing from Punk’s departure from Panda Global. And it looks like now we know why!

Frame 3:
sonicfoxpad
Sonic Fox tries out a PlayStation 4 pad prototype that could be much better for fighting game players

I am excited to see how this develops — a better pad will absolutely open up even more players to the genre.

Frame 4:
ELEAGUE SFV
ELEAGUE’s Street Fighter V 2018 Invitational showcases five nights of action with a $250,000 prize

If ELEAGUE learns from the mistakes of the past (and I could personally do without Richard Lewis on commentary), then there’s no reason for its next season of SFV action to fail.

Frame 5:

New “Rotate Cancel” glitch discovered in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle

JoJo:ASB came out in 2013, and there’s still new and interesting tech being discovered for it.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Cross Character Pack 3 to be revealed on Thursday, April 19th

Following the reveal of Aegis, Carmine and Jubei in Cross Character Pack 2 a few weeks ago, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle‘s official website updated yesterday, revealing that the next trio of DLC characters will be revealed three weeks from today: on Thursday, April 19th, on the next monthly Arc Nama stream. This will bring the number of revealed DLC characters up to 11, leaving nine more to be announced.

One interesting fact looms over the reveals, though — as a series of dedicated posters on reddit and GameFAQs have seemingly deciphered the identities of the DLC characters’ silhouettes seen at the end of the 2017 ASW Fighting Game Awards trailer. Though these silhouettes haven’t been seen again in reveal trailers since, many believe them to be clipped together images of old sprites from BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena, and Under Night In-Birth.

Though this is certainly just fan speculation, they seem to fit together like the pieces of a puzzle, with none of the choices seeming too out of place, since they would keep with the theme of the logos used in promotion. This would mean ASW is sticking purely to 10 characters from the original Persona 4 Arena, bringing in more of the Central Fiction newcomers for BlazBlue, as well as one of the four new challengers from Under Night In-Birth: EXE Late[st], so it’s worth keeping in mind once the announcement is upon us. If the guesses are fully accurate, our remaining DLC characters would be as follows:

BlazBlue:

  • Hakumen
  • Izayoi
  • Nine The Phantom
  • Mai Natsume

Persona 4 Arena:

  • Naoto Shirogane
  • Mitsuru Kirijo
  • Akihiko Sanada
  • Labrys

Under Night In-Birth EXE: Late[st]:

  • Yuzuriha
  • Vatista
  • Merkava
  • Mika Returna

You can see a picture of the characters believed to be the identities of the silhouettes below, with the trailer text removed to provide a cleaner and clearer image, below.

As usual, you can catch the full stream at 4:00 AM PT (5:00 AM MT and 7:00 AM ET) at twitch.tv/arcsystemworks. There will also be an additional reveal on Wednesday, April 11th — likely of the contents of the title’s “Limited Box,” which will feature a download code for the “All-In-One” pack, as well as an art book, a special illustration of the four series’ protagonists done by their respective main artists, and other physical goodies — at twitch.tv/arcsystemworksu. The next #BBmyTAG combo video will also be released on Friday, March 30th.

Evo announces collaboration with AnimEVO on side stream stage for 2018

The announcement of AnimEVO 2018’s initial lineup was met with positive reactions in the fighting game community. The side tournament series has found themselves increasing in popularity this year, and should certainly see more eyes focused on their streams over Evo weekend.

Evo itself has taken notice of the swirl of talk about AnimEVO and reminded us that they will be working with the team to provide their games exposure on the side stage. They also asked the community which of the AnimEVO lineup they would be most excited to see on stream. This could potentially be used to guage which games to put on the side stream, so if you want to see a specific game on their side stage, respond to the below tweet and make your voice heard!

Tianhuo burns with rage in this combo tutorial for Them’s Fightin’ Herds

Them’s Fightin’ Herds may lack a large roster characters at the moment with its Steam Early Access release, but there’s a load of depth to this new title that begs to be uncovered. Much like many anime-style fighters, the title is very combo heavy, and has a variety of hit confirms into magic series combos followed up by launches.

Tianhuo boasts all of the above in this combo video, which serves as a visual aid for her bread and butter combos. As such, the combos range from simple to advanced, all of which seem practical in the competitive landscape. Mastering these could definitely give you a hoof up on the competition.

Learn to put the pressure on with these King safe moves in Tekken 7

Finding advantages in Tekken 7 is as important (if not more so) as in other fighting games. Finding situations where you are in a plus-frame scenario — meaning your move is safe on block — means the ability to create mix-ups and continue your pressure. For King, however, this also means setups into his plethora of command grabs.

Finding these plus-frame scenarios can be difficult, due to spacing issues. But given the variety of moves King has with multiple active frames, his ability to get plus-frame scenarios off of shallow hits is incredible, leading to many possible mix-ups.

Prepare for parrying perfection with this Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition compilation

A lot of people who got into the fighting game community did so by way of seeing Evo Moment 37: where Daigo Umehara fully parried Justin Wong’s Super Art from Chun-Li to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. While parrying in Street Fighter V has become easier to do, players and audiences alike still get hype over well-timed parries into big damage.

For those parrying fans, this compilation from LiangHuBBB is for you. With featured footage from Gunfight, MDZ Jimmy, Neon, and Alex Valle among others, you get a glimpse of amazingly hype parry moments from a plethora of characters against a wide array of moves and setups.

Can Alex win? BornFree talks to Gunfight about Street Fighter V at Final Round 2018

The Alex mainstay talks about his SFV character crisis, and more!

At Final Round 2018, BornFree had the chance to talk at length with Atlas Bear’s Gunfight, possibly the best Alex player in Street Fighter V worldwide. They discuss Gunfight’s thoughts on the balance of many of SFV’s mechanics, and the possibility that success in SFV outright requires a secondary character — something he himself is currently considering, in the form of Urien or Rashid.

Of course, they discuss much more — including Gunfight’s prowess with 3rd Strike’s Dudley, and how Abigail maybe isn’t necessarily as strong as currently thought. Check it out below!

Ultimately, it looks like Gunfight isn’t quite ready to leave the #AlexNation just yet:

Mega Man gets a taste of his own medicine in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with these Metal Blade combos

For decades, Mega Man has shamelessly stolen weapons from his fallen foes. Now, it’s time for the characters of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U to rise up and steal back from him what was taken!

In this combo video, we see the bottom row of characters in the roster use Mega Man’s Metal Blade against him, launching him to situational (but effective) combos, many of which can take a full stock if performed correctly. Who knew Mega Man’s greatest weakness would be karma?

Make your opponents flip coins with these mix-up options for Ibuki in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Ibuki has been a character of chaos since her creation. Since Street Fighter III, it has always been difficult to guess her next move. In Street Fighter IV, she became the master of vortexes. Now, in Street Fighter V, she is able to create 50/50 mix-ups in a variety of ways.

From V-Trigger setups to not using V-Trigger at all, Ibuki has tons of potential. There are even examples of using triple dashes in order to keep your opponents guessing to the bitter end of their life bars. This video by TaktakAdu showcases so many setups that it will even make battle-hardened Akuma dizzy.
