Capcom Pro Tour 2018 Premier Pass announced; New “Ring of Power” stage and costumes for Akuma & Sakura revealed

Another year, another CPT pass; the Ring of Power looks really good. And Akuma has turned out to be a pretty snappy dresser.

DBFZ is set to start dropping the DLC, and anticipation is at high power levels… you know how high.

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary CollectionStreet Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection launches May 29, 2018; Digital pre-orders include a copy of Ultra Street Fighter IV

We now have a set release date for this classics compilation; recent footage seems to indicate that this will be a worthy collection, and the pre-order bonus of Ultra Street Fighter IV is a great addition.

Orbonne Monastery has arrived! And the fairly extensive balance changes may indicate that Square Enix is indeed as serious about competitive support for Dissidia as they have claimed.

The mysterious (and fiery) Najd revealed for The King of Fighters XIV

Not only is Najd a great design, but its really fantastic of SNK to run a contest to make a fan character come to life. I wish more companies took risks like this.

BornFree talks to MenaRD about Street Fighter V stardom, hard work, and how victory at Capcom Cup 2017 changed his life

I personally find MenaRD’s story inspiring. This puts me in the minority, judging by the divisive way he’s been received.

Frame 3:

Frame 4:
Kazuma_Kiryu_in_Yakuza_6Yakuza series Producer Daisuke Sato says it’s up to Harada if fans want to see Kazuma Kiryu in Tekken 7

It is absurd to me that Sato-san would even talk about this if it weren’t already being discussed behind-the-scenes. I have to think we’ll see Kiryu in Season 2.

I honestly think Gravity Breakers is one of the most ambitious indie fighters I’ve seenin a while, and I’m really excited to watch it grow.

Captain Ginyu and Recoome glitch leads to infinite combos in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Twitter has been buzzing with footage of infinites in Dragon Ball FighterZ, thanks to an apparent glitch affecting the Ginyu Force. Players have found that when playing Captain Ginyu, continuing a combo after Recoome’s Eraser Gun special attack will disrupt the game’s hitstun deterioration mechanic, allowing for a second character to tag in and perform infinite combo loops.

Under normal circumstances the game will reduce the hitstun of each attack during the course of a combo until the victim is able to tech in midair. For some reason Recoome’s beam disrupts the hitstun scaling mechanic, and allows combos to go on indefinitely. Similar glitches have impacted games like Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Persona 4 Arena in the past.

Because Captain Ginyu’s “Together… Ginyu Force” special rotates between members of the Ginyu Force, landing the ideal combo starter to lead into the infinite is certainly no easy task. But while eliminating a character in a single combo is nothing new to Dragon Ball FighterZ, there is usually a higher cost of meter, Sparking, and execution associated with the combo. Earning such a high reward for landing Recoome’s blast was likely not a design choice, and it would be unsurprising to see the effect patched out in the near future.

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown returns to the spotlight in this Sarah Bryant combo video

With the Virtua Fighter series currently receded into the background, characters from the franchise are at a dearth in publicity. As such, it is always refreshing to see the series get some attention.

In this combo video, Sarah Bryant — in the series since the very first game — shows off what she can do in Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. This shows a lot of wall carries, and even a few ring-outs over the wall as we see a lot of usage of the core mechanics of the game.

Why Tournament Battle mode is a good fit as a Nintendo Switch exclusive for the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

A look at the history behind this Super Street Fighter spin-off, and why only the Switch is getting it.

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

It was recently revealed that the Nintendo Switch version of the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is getting an exclusive addition: it will be tho only platform that gets a version of the somewhat rare Super Street Fighter II: The Tournament Battle.

In a recent article, Stephen Kleckner discusses the history behind The Tournament Battle: an ambitious four-cabinet variation of Super Street Fighter II, released at the height of the 2D fighting boom, that allowed players to jump right into an eight-player tournament — with the software itself handling all the bracketing work. The article also describes the challenges to acceptance that this game faced, such as the expense of quadruplicate hardware to arcade operators, and the awkwardness (and trolling potential) of cabinet-hopping between fights.

Ultimately, it adds up to why this odd SSF2 offshoot is best suited for the Switch, as the portability of the console lends itself well to the structure of The Tournament Battle. Read the whole article over on VentureBeat!

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch (with the exclusive Tournament Battle mode) on May 29, 2018.

Mikado Arcade’s Street Fighter Carnival X continues with The King of Fighters XIV, Virtua Fighter 3 tournaments

Street Fighter Carnival X is Mikado Arcade’s currently-ongoing multi-game tournament series for a wide variety of classic (and sometimes, obscure) arcade titles. To see the beginning of these high-level Japanese tournaments, go here!

Today’s main draw is one of the most modern games to ever show up in a Mikado event, SNK’s The King of Fighters XIV…

…which makes it doubly funny to see that it was the followup to the previous day’s SFC X tournament, Virtua Fighter 3: Team Battle. Never change, Mikado.

You can follow the action of SFCX by subscribing to Mikado’s official YouTube channel. For the night owls in the US, you can even try to catch them when they livestream.

Learn how to get out of Adult Gohan’s corner pressure in Dragon Ball FighterZ

After watching GO1’s incredible play at Final Round, reality set in for many in the FGC — if you didn’t know how to deal with Adult Gohan’s corner pressure, you were going to lose very quickly in Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Depending upon who you have on your team, though, it may not be such a bad situation. As rooflemonger demonstrates in his latest tutorial video, there’s a selection of character hurt-boxes that are able to duck under Gohan’s leg loop. Check out the video above to see if your chosen fighter has a clear-cut answer, or needs to make big risks to get away from Gohan.

Tekken 7 Noctis roundup: Tech traps, frame trap lows, punishment guide, and more!

We’re into day two of Noctis’s invasion of Tekken 7, and after seeing the punishment options and damage already discovered on day one, it looks like he’s winning the war. The FGC’s tech should only get crazier from here on out — let’s see what players have cooked up today!

If you’re looking for a comprehensive breakdown of the DLC prince, you’re not going to find a more thorough discussion then mastermind’s hour-long seminar on Noctis.

Aris, a.k.a. Mr. Avoiding The Puddle, explores the power of Noctis’s FC DF+2. This fantastic low gives Noctis a solid 50/50 on counterhit.

Muramishi shares a wide variety of ways to wall-carry with Noctis. Which is particularly good, since Noctis seems to have a decent ability to get wall-resplats in corners, as demonstrated below.

Scallywag 93 offers up a Noctis punishment guide:

HurtboxTV is encouraging a Tekken 5 flavor with their dash-jab heavy combo video.

Demon has found an exceptional tech trap using Noctis’s jab-teleport, of all things.

With all the dropkicks in this Geese stage combo from 쿨잼Coorejam, you’d think Noctis was trained by King.

And last but certainly not least, the most important Noctis tech that has been discovered in Tekken 7 to date: Noctbob is an option for those that haven’t downloaded DLC3 yet.

If you see anything worth sharing, let us know by submitting a tip for our next roundup. Thanks everyone!

West City Weekly analyzes Sonic Fox v. GO1’s exhibition and Final Round 2018 grand finals matches

The biggest story of Final Round 2018‘s Dragon Ball FighterZ event starts before the tournament itself did — with SonicFox vs. GO1’s first-to-10 exhibition match. Not only did this exhibition serve as the first face-off of two of the best players in the world, but when juxtaposed with the tournament’s grand finals, it also gave us an interesting insight into each of their problem-solving capabilities.

There’s plenty to learn from both sets, but what makes the grand finals so interesting is the adaptation of both players once they had some experience with each other. Check out the videos above to see DBFZ-focused channel West City Weekly tackle some of the finer points of each set, and how the story of these world-class players evolved over the course of the weekend.

BornFree talks to MenaRD about Street Fighter V stardom, hard work, and how victory at Capcom Cup 2017 changed his life

BornFree had a great opportunity for a first-time interview with a rising star in the fighting game community. At Final Round, the FGC YouTuber caught up with none other than RISE|MenaRD, the Dominican Republic star who burst onto the world stage after a tremendous victory at Capcom Cup 2017.

The interview opens with the big question about that event, and how it changed MenaRD’s life. The victory dramatically changed his and his family’s financial situation, and helped him travel and compete more. MenaRD established a team called Santo Domingo Tigers, that seeks to elevate the profile of Dominican Republic esports competitors. Next, BornFree turns the conversation to thoughts about the balance of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. MenaRD speaks up about Abigail — who, in his opinion, is not playing the same game as all the other characters. He outright says that Abigail shouldn’t be in the game.

The rest of the conversation covers which characters MenaRD likes to play, his relations with the community at large, and his training regimen.

BornFree also recently posted an interview with GO1.

Catch the best moments of Final Round 2018’s Street Fighter V tournament in these highlights

The Capcom Pro Tour kicked off in a big way at Final Round. Every one was bringing their A-game — as developed since the release of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition — and as such, we saw a lot of interesting plays and hype moments throughout the weekend.

From Infiltration’s big reveal of his signing to Panda Global, to NL’s amazing double-perfect against stormKUBO’s oppressive Abigail, there were many moments that could’ve been included in a highlight reel. But Capcom did their best to condense the weekend into five of the very best moments, and did a good job at doing so:
