ARMS Online Open competition announced for US & Canada

While the big news from Nintendo in yesterday’s Nintendo Direct stream was about Super Smash Bros. on the Switch, the company also had something for the ARMS faithful. Nintendo has announced a US & Canada Open competition, that will take place in the game’s ranked matches.

The qualifiers for the competition — which is open to all legal residents of the United States and Canada — have already started as of March 8, and will run until March 18. During this period, players must play 50 ranked matches in order to be eligible for the finals.

The finals itself will take place (also online) on March 31. Here, the top 8 qualifiers will duke it out in a single-elimination tournament. All of the top 8 qualifiers will receive signed artwork from Nintendo — however, while everyone else will receive black and white art, the champion will receive a special colored art print worth more than twice that of the rest.

In addition to this, Nintendo also announced that ARMS would be getting a new Global Test Punch after the event, from March 31 to April 2.

CEO X New Japan Pro Wrestling live event to be held on Friday, June 29th in Daytona Beach

CEO Founder, Director and Promoter Alex Jebailey has been teasing a massive announcement for the annual summer event in Florida, one that would shock the fighting game community to its core — and he finally delivered with the announcement of CEO X NJPW.

This will be a live professional wresting event, featuring the stars of New Japan Pro Wrestling — which has been steadily nurturing and growing its relationship in the United States with the G1 Special in USA, and a return to Long Beach, California set for later this month for the Strong Style Evolved event. But now, the stars of New Japan will be bringing their unique brand of hard-hitting action to Daytona Beach, Florida — the site of CEO 2018 — on Friday, June 29th, to kick off the massive weekend of festivities.

Dubbed “an experience and crossover event the FGC will never forget,” by Alex Jebailey, the TO notes that tickets for “The King of Sports” event will go on sale in April; a special pre-sale and price discount for all CEO 2018 registrants will be available, and “affordable general admission” is promised. The match card will be revealed at a later date. When asked about seating, Jebailey noted that there would be “over 9,000 if needed,” and that those with spectator passes will also be e-mailed about the pre-sale.

“The Cleaner” Kenny Omega — former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight and first-ever United States Champion — has attended the last two CEOs as a special guest, and has already confirmed his attendance on Twitter, exclaiming that this is “The crossover event [he’s] been waiting for!” while extending an invite to WWE’s Xavier Woods to come with him. You can see the tweets below — and get ready, because “They’re Coming!”

This is certainly a bombshell of an announcement, and promises to be an unforgettable night for fans of fighting games and professional wrestling. Stay tuned to Shoryuken for all of the ticket details and full match card information as it becomes available. It’s gonna be a slobberknocker!

Rumors about Geralt the Witcher appearing in SoulCalibur VI increase as CD Projekt RED teases crossover

As SoulCalibur VI developer Bandai Namco continues to slowly trickle out official news, eager fighting games turn to leaks and speculations to figure out the remaining characters. Many people have wondered whether Geralt from the popular RPG series The Witcher could make it into the game, seeing as he’s a skilled swordfighter (who is also capable of limited magic with Signs, which could easily fit with some of SoulCalibur‘s special moves). Now, there are more hints to fuel this line of speculation.

Recently, CD Projekt RED’s Community Lead Marcin Momot tweeted the following:

Momot specifically mentions “one of the upcoming games later this year,” which would align with SoulCalibur VI‘s release. Furthermore, the Witcher 3 was published in Europe by Bandai Namco. Some believe that Geralt would also be a great fit in Monster Hunter World, which is certainly true; however, that game is already out.

YouTuber rooflemonger believes Geralt would be a “perfect fit” in the game:

Dasvergeben is still providing some SoulCalibur VI rumors, but Geralt specifically wasn’t mentioned so far.

Pushing an opponent towards the wall with careful space control is the cornerstone of the fighting game genre. Even if some of the details are a little different, this is true in Pokkén Tournament DX‘s Duel Phase as well.

Once you employ proper space control in the neutral, locking your opponent down in the corner is your reward. In BadIntent‘s latest tutorial video, he breaks down how best to contain people in the corner and maximize your damage potential from this advantageous position.

EZ MOD kit for the MadCatz Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition S+ now available at Jasen’s Customs

These days, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to arcade sticks. Despite this — or maybe even because of it — people tend to have personal favorites. As such, many players naturally would like to be able to use certain makes of arcade sticks on consoles they may not have been originally meant for.

For any players who feel this way about MadCatz’s Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition S+ (or TES+ for short), here’s some great news: Jasen’s Customs now has a TES+ EZ MOD kit for sale.

The MadCatz’s TES+ is itself designed to emulate another classic, the original Tournament Edition line of arcade sticks for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The stick borrows multiple features from  various permutations of the classic TE, and brought it up-to-date for the current generation, specifically the PlayStation 4.

Now for those who’ve fallen in love with the TES+, Jasen’s Custom’s TES+ EZ MOD kit allows for you to make it work with almost any console with a USB port, thanks to the inclusion of a Brook Universal Fighting Board. The SRK Forum migration is complete, now back up and running on Discourse!

The move is finished — come see the new & improved forums!

Get ready for Daigo Umehara’s Kemonomichi 2 on March 9th with these competitor interviews!

The Beasts will do battle tomorrow night!

It’s almost time for Daigo Umehara’s second exhibition event, Kemonomichi 2! This event will see first-to-ten fights between legends in three different titles: we’ll see Ito take on Kotaka Shoten in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Tanukana will battle Yuyu in Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, and Daigo Umehara faces Tokido in a Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition showdown.

For a closer look at the fighters in Kemonomichi 2, their characters, and their styles, check out the interview videos below; Daigo Umehara, the Kemonomichi competitors, and other players provide insight into all of the above.

Super Smash Bros. project teased for Nintendo Switch, planned for 2018 release

Four years ago, Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U was released. Since then, Nintendo’s “Nintendo Direct” promotional streams have been decried by the increasingly impatient Smash community when they have always failed to mention a sequel to the wildly popular crossover platform fighter. Say what you will about Smash fans, you can’t deny how vocal and committed they are — and now, their prayers and pleas have been answered at last.

Teased at the very end of today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast was a short 1-minute promo: Starting off slyly as (what appeared to be) more Splatoon 2 promotional footage, the tone quickly shifted when the Super Smash Bros. logo appeared in a fiery blaze.

At the time of this writing, it’s completely unclear as to whether this is a port of the Wii U version, or if this is a full-fledged sequel. Nintendo followed up with a tweet confirming that some version of Super Smash Bros. is Switch-inbound this year:

Either way, two things are certain: the Inklings are in, and we will see a decline in the number of Wii U consoles at tournaments at some point this year.

Check out these combos for Omen of Sorrow’s Dr. Hyde and Vladislav III

Back when we tried out AOne game’s Omen of Sorrow at Evo Japan, the game had two new additions, in the form of Dr. Hyde and Vladislav III. Now, AOne Game’s and ETC’s McFly have dropped a a couple of videos for these two, showing off some combos for them.

Now, we’ve talked about Dr. Hyde before — that said, the last time out, the focus was more on his zoning and keep-away game. In the video below however, we finally get a chance to see what he can do in terms of combos.

Vladislav III on the other hand is more of a counter-zoner, with a projectile that lets him teleport in on hit, as well as the ability to chain his normals in quick succession should he get in. When he does, the video below shows some things that he can pull off.
