How can tournaments improve the experience for low/mid-level players? Armada gives his thoughts

Making a tournament fun for players of all skill levels is becoming a vital talking point within the world of Super Smash Bros. Melee. For those who go 0-2 and find there is nothing else to do at an event besides playing friendlies and watching matches, there is very little incentive to come back next time round — especially when Melee has netplay and there is always a stream or other tournament to watch.

Having also noticed this trend and seeing the negative impact it could have on Melee, Armada has dedicated his latest vlog to advising TOs on what they can do to keep low/mid-level players engaged after they get knocked out. Amateur brackets are a start, but I think tournaments need to follow the lead of events like Combo Breaker and CEO, in offering side activities where attendees can just focus on having fun.

Paradise Arcade Shop opens pre-orders for the Magenta joystick, intends to ship on January 15th

After Evo, we wrote a preview piece on the Magenta, Paradise Arcade Shop’s optical joystick. While their intent was to release in September, several issues along the supply chain caused them to push back the release until they were able to fix those issues.

At long last, the team has announced that pre-orders for what can be described as the Cadillac of arcade levers has opened. Going at the price tag of $99.99, the stick will come with all the bells and whistles described in our preview article alongside five replaceable springs of different weights so you can emulate whatever style stick you want.

Further, if you pre-order, you receive an entry into a raffle for a free prototype version of the Magenta–which functions just as the real thing but with a 3D printed casing for the board. There will be three raffles, and if you order now, you will receive entry in all three raffles. Ordering later will obviously only net you entries into the raffles still to be drawn.

Mikado Arcade’s Super Street Fighter Carnival 2017 continues with 2vs2 World Heroes 2 tournament

“Super Street Fighter Carnival 2017” marches on! SSFC2017 is the currently-ongoing Japanese tournament series at Mikado Arcade for a wide variety of classic (and sometimes, obscure) arcade titles. If you missed the first few tournaments from SSFC2017, there’s a lot to catch up on!

SSFC2017 started a little over a month ago with SNK and ADK’s World Heroes 2. Now in the last quarter of the tournament series, we return to WH2 with a 2 vs. 2 team format. That’s twice as many people that you’ll get to see employing old school footsies and ridiculous infinites.

World Heroes 2 is a popular series in Mikado’s SSFC2017 format, though its two most-played entries at the arcade — this and World Heroes 2 Perfect –– are quite different from each other. If you want to compare, SSFC2017 has had its own tournament for that, too, which you can check out here.

Enjoying SSFC2017? You can follow the action by subscribing to Mikado’s official YouTube channel, or you can even try to catch Mikado Arcade when they livestream!

If you thought characters like Balrog and Abigail have high damage potentials in Street Fighter V, you haven’t seen anything yet. Back in the earlier days of fighting games, one hit could have done enough to kill at any given point.

In this combo video — the first of a series — celebrating the 30th anniversary of Street Fighter, SkillSmith shows off some of the most impressive combos in Hyper Street Fighter II. Showing off every selectable character within the game, literally every combo in the video results in a touch of death.

SSBM Tutorials discusses the strange quirks regarding different controller ports in Super Smash Bros. Melee

In this video, SSBM Tutorials explains the differences between GameCube controller ports; while controller port one will always get a grab or ledge grab in a tie, the other ports have advantages out of throws, where they can react faster.
