Guilty Gear pro Ryan Hunter talks love for Under Night In-Birth, Arc Revo Tour, and more with BornFree

“There was a time in this community where no one was playing for money. You can’t say that now.”

Many reading this have likely encountered Ryan Hunter first through OptionSelectDotCom, where he was among the first “lab monsters” to break apart the mechanics behind Street Fighter IV. Ryan has gone on to demonstrate a real prowess for fighting games far beyond any particular title, having obtained top finishes at majors for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, and most notably, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2.

In short, he’s been around. In BornFree‘s latest interview, America’s top Venom shares his views on FGC history, the push-pull between spectator and player, and why Under Night In-Birth appeals to OG fighting game players.

VesperArcade asks Capcom to pick a poison for F.A.N.G in Season 4 of Street Fighter V

F.A.N.G has been perpetually been obsessed with the number two, but has conceptually been far from that number on the tier lists since his creation. The strength of his poison was well overstated, and his damage outside of that has also been lackluster at best.

With this, VesperArcade offers several avenues that Capcom could take to not only make F.A.N.G stronger, but also more interesting to play as. He gave several possible changes to the poison mechanic, as well as several moves — including his unlinkable light attacks — to be buffed in order to make him a stronger competitive presence.

See what base Goku can do with the help of other Gokus in this Dragon Ball FighterZ combo video

If there’s something that Dragon Ball FighterZ has an abundance of, it’s various incarnations of the franchise’ lead character Goku. As such, there will inevitably be those who will try to play teams made up of nothing… but… Goku.

The combo video below from Playergodaines focuses mostly on the base form Goku that arrived as DLC a few months back. Indeed, there are a number of solo combos for him that don’t need any help from his other selves. However, the more intriguing combos here are based around him being backed up by his Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan forms.

Capcom Cup 2018 Analysis: Has Haitani Improved Enough?

Haitani has thrice found his way into Capcom Cup since the dawn of Street Fighter V. While his Necalli has always been the horse he rode into the fray, many found the character as much a liability as a strength for the player, and as such, Haitani’s runs were never too deep.

This year will see him fully focused on a brand new main in Akuma. But will that new main translate into improved performance?

sfv_necalli_menacing

The Main Problem

Let’s face it, Necalli quickly dropped in the tier lists as time went on. In a game where rampant pressure reigned supreme, a character who had stubby normals combined with iffy spacing tools definitely was definitely found to be lacking.

This caused Necalli to see problems within the meta, and caused players such as GamerBee and Haitani both to struggle within the deeper phases of brackets. Both players would soon find their way to greener pastures… with Haitani, this translated into a shift to Akuma.

While his pick of Necalli made sense based off his old Street Fighter III main of Makoto, his willingness to shift to a character with huge amounts of burst damage and mixup potential made perfect sense if he was interested in making a serious go on the circuit this year. And this change to Akuma has caused his results to be far more consistent.

The Remaining Problems

While his results have been more consistent, his remaining problem is one I also found with Luffy, but in a different angle. While he has done well in making top 8s, and even winning a CPT Premier event, it may not be enough evidence to claim he has gotten to the point where he can take down the toughest bracket in the world.

sfv_akuma_hado_cropWhile I would definitely call the EU Regional Finals bracket the weakest Premier bracket on the circuit this year, the Latin American Regional Finals bracket may be the second weakest. This is not to knock the Latin American region — which I view as increasingly strong — the players there are overall not accustomed to playing against the best players in the world; even Europe has more experience on this front. So when you take down a Premier with your most fierce opponent being Mago, it calls into question how your chances fare in a far more stacked bracket.

Mago has been consistent as a player for a long time, but has been at the lowest echelon of top players, and hasn’t won a single event since August 2016, even a ranking event. So when this is your top competition, it becomes easier for you to capitalize and take a title.

But when it comes down to playing against everyone else in the hunt for the title, he has fared worse. Given this was his only tournament win, and only two other times was he able to breach the top 4, this is a major concern for him.

Final Thoughts

It sounds very easy to dismiss Haitani. He’s still a formidable opponent that no one should sleep on. However, his Akuma play isn’t particularly remarkable — what he’s doing, Tokido is doing better — and his results haven’t been stellar enough to call him a major threat.

While Bonchan hasn’t posted a win on the year, he has done historically better in stronger fields this season, and definitely has strong characters to overtake Haitani’s Akuma with. While it’ll be a hard guess either way, don’t be surprised if Haitani is fighting from Losers Bracket right out of the gate.

Take advantage of Abigail’s gigantic hurt box with Ken’s tatsu in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

World Warrior FGC has shared much in the way of complicated Ken-specific Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition tech with us over the years. However, sometimes it’s just nice to go gawk at gigantic damage, and that’s almost certainly what you’ll do after you see what he’s created for the Ken-Abigail match-up.

Maybe this is an understatement, but Abigail’s giant hurt box becomes a huge liability against Ken. The firey shoto can suddenly find himself landing multiple hits of his heavy kick Tatsu as combo starters, including up to 3 hits in the corner alone!

Yasuyuki Oda talks about working at old SNK, SNK Heroines, and more in this new interview with Arcade Attack

We almost had Cathy and Roddy from Top Hunter in SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.

Yasuyuki Oda is someone who’s had a long history with SNK. While he rejoined the company for King of Fighters XIV, he also got his start in the company over 20 years ago back in 1993.

In a new interview, Arcade Attack talks to Oda about his history with the company, talking about how it was like to work there back in the day. Oda talks about his initial work as an artist and later doing testing for games such as Fatal Fury Special and  Art of Fighting 2. Now, working as a producer in a revitalized SNK, he says that he’s able to use his experience working on fighting games to teach newer staff about them and their development.

Moving over to their most recent release, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, they talk about looking at female characters from SNK’s various titles and bringing them into the game. While they started with the popular ones from past games, they also looked at newer characters and how they could make them more popular. Additionally, Oda admits that he wishes they could have added even more characters, specifically pointing to Cathy and Roddy from Top Hunter.

Of course, this is just a small part of the interview. Read the rest over at Arcade Attack, where they go over things such as Oda’s favorite SNK games and character, non-SNK titles, and more.
