The first Strider? Check out the similarities between Street Fighter V’s Zeku and Strider Hiryu’s classic sprites

What is Zeku’s place in the world — or history — of Strider?

When Zeku’s reveal trailer dropped, there was something very clearly familiar about the long-lost Bushinryu warrior’s appearance and fighting style(s)… it was immediately apparent that Street Fighter V‘s Ever-Changing Ninja has a distinct connection to Strider Hiryu, of classic 2D-action and Marvel Versus fighting lore.

R. Barone has posted this very interesting graphic comparison to Twitter, showing us the close similarity between many of Zeku’s (both old and young) animations, and sprites from older 2D appearances of Strider Hiryu:

Is Capcom suggesting that Zeku is the first Strider, from long before the time of Strider Hiryu? Or is it just a strong visual nod to one of Capcom’s most popular characters? We are currently left to wonder at what exactly the connection between Bushinryu, Zeku, and the Strider universe really is; perhaps Zeku’s Character Story Mode will further solidify this connection… or perhaps not. It’d almost be more tantalizing to leave the lore open to our own interpretation. Regardless: enjoy trying out “Strider Zeku” today, once the SFV servers are back up!

X-Kira reveals 31 new Street Fighter V costumes, as well as a second cinematic Story Mode

The river of Street Fighter V leaks keeps flowing from the Twitter of dataminer X-Kira. In his newest video, he talks about 31 new premium DLC costumes set to arrive for 19 members of the cast. These include the sport costumes for Kolin, Zangief, and Karin arriving today, as well as more Nostalgic and Holiday costumes, more special Chun-Li alternates designed by Akiman, and a mysterious “Set73” that appears to be a yet unrevealed themed collection of outfits.

The entire list is as follows:

  • Ryu: Set73
  • M. Bison: Set73
  • Chun-Li: Set73, Nostalgia, Set68, Set69, Set70, Set71
  • Karin Kanzuki: Set73, Nostalgia, Sporty
  • Ken: Set73
  • Zangief: Set73, Sporty
  • Laura: Set73
  • Nash: Set73
  • Vega: Set73
  • Birdie: Nostalgia
  • R. Mika: Set73
  • Rashid: Set73
  • Cammy: Set73, Holiday
  • Guile: Set73
  • Balrog: Set73, Nostalgia
  • Alex: Holiday
  • Akuma: Set73
  • Kolin: Set73, Sporty, Holiday
  • Menat: Holiday

To close out the video, X-Kira reveals a secret root menu displaying a tab for a “General Story Volume 2,” meaning we could see an additional cinematic Story Mode at some point, presumably following up on A Shadow Falls, released in June 2016. You can see the video below:

He later clarified on Twitter that the Set68-71 Costumes for Chun are four more alternates designed by Akiman, alongside the Set64 Vacation, Set65 Pajamas, and Set67 Undercover Cop outfits currently available — and a currently-missing Set66 — for 8 costumes in all.

X-Kira also continued trickling out more “Cosplay” costumes of famous Capcom characters, similar to the ones we covered previously that will be obtainable in SFV:AE’s Extra Battle mode. There will be a quartet of classic Mega Man costumes: the Blue Bomber himself, Protoman, Roll, and Bass (or Forte in Japan), as well as outfits for Star Gladiator’s Hayato Kanzaki, Devil May Cry‘s Trish, Vergil, and Nero, Nilin Cartier-Wells from Remember Me, Darkstalkers’ Baby Bonnie Hood, Felicia, and Jon Talbain, Resident Evil’s Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Ada Wong, Mega Man X and Zero, God Hand’s Gene, Power Stone’s Edward Falcon, Regina from Dino Crisis, Breath of Fire’s Ryu, Sengoku Basara‘s Sanada Yukimura, and Captain Commando’s Baby Head and Ginzu the Ninja (known as Hoover and Sho in Japan).

EventHubs user Flowtron — who correctly leaked SFV’s entire Season 2 character roster — has also gone on record as to which World Warriors will be receiving a few of these costumes. Chun-Li will embrace the dark by getting the Morrigan alt; Karin will be elegantly dressing as Ingrid; Ryu will be carrying the company’s mascot mantle as he dons the armor of both the classic and Mega Man X (as well as Jin Saotome); Guile will be enforcing futuristic justice as Captain Commando; Urien will continue his cleansing ways as Donovan — whose look Dan will also don as an NPC; Ken will create Reuben Langdon-caption with the Dante alt; Cammy becomes an honorary member of S.T.A.R.S. with Jill’s costume; Menat will embrace her feline side with the Felicia alt; while Ed craves more (Psycho) power in Vergil’s attire. X-Kira has even confirmed that the original “Devil’s Never Cry,” from Devil May Cry 3 will playing during the Extra Battle event to obtain Ken’s Dante costume. An extremely nice touch, if true.

You can find all of the Tweets about this below.

Naturally — as usual — the imminent arrival of this stuff in the game proper is unconfirmed until some clarification or announcements from Capcom themselves. What do you think of all of these Cosplay costumes coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition? Is there anyone else you’d like to see, and who do you think will be wearing each one? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition pre-orders will include 30th Anniversary & Nostalgia premium costumes

A nice bonus for players joining Street Fighter V with Arcade Edition.

For good or bad, Street Fighter V has a lot of premium costumes available; four more are being added today. However, Capcom-Unity has announced a pre-order bonus for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition that helps mitigate the drain on the DLC wallet, at least for players picking up the game in January: they’re throwing in the 30th Anniversary costumes and most of the Nostalgia costumes, tacking on nine outfits for customers ready to buy early.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition will be available January 18, 2018; existing users will receive the gameplay upgrades and improvements (but not the Season 1 & 2 DLC characters) for free.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite places 6th in NPD’s latest sales chart

Much has been said about Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite‘s sales potential — or the supposed lack of it. Early data from the UK indicated that the game wasn’t selling well in that region. However, the big question has always been that of sales in the United States, a country that’s been considered the bastion of the series.

Market research firm the NPD Group has released its video game sales data for the month of September, and it shows some good signs for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Capcom’s latest installment in the Marvel Vs. series came in at 6th place on the list. The games that outsold it are expected big hitters such as Destiny 2 and the Nintendo Switch’s top-selling title Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, as well as sports titles such as Madden NLF 18, FIFA 18, and NBA 2k18.

On the other hand, Pokken Tournament DX, which beat out Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite in the UK, comes in only at 13th. Take note, however: the data for Switch games does not cover digital sales.

Meanwhile, breaking things down on a per-console basis, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite placed 5th overall on PlayStation 4, outselling the much-anticipated Uncharted: Lost Legacy. On Xbox One, however, the game was slightly lower — at 8th.

Of course, while this is some good news for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, it’s still far from what has been achieved by Injustice 2 and For Honor, which are presently the top-selling fighting games for 2017.

Nintendo Switch 4.0.0 update has added GameCube controller functionality

Let the rumor mills start flowing: in the recent 4.0.0 firmware update of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has added GameCube controller functionality via the Wii U’s USB-based GameCube adapter. In order to sync your GameCube controller, you must press the L and R buttons on the controller settings page of your Switch. It appears that the Switch can use the GameCube pad as a general controller — not tied to specific software — although the configuration is naturally lacking a few buttons.

While this update may be seemingly innocuous, this could have huge future implications for the Smash community, who have long wondered about the future of Smash at Nintendo. Could they be gearing up to release a port of Super Smash Bros. Melee, or Super Smash Bros. for Wii U onto the system? Or is it possible that we might be seeing an entirely new entry into the franchise? It is also possible that this support was added for use with other GameCube-era titles that may be coming to the Virtual Console in the future.

Street Fighter V servers down for maintenance today — Zeku and new sports costumes incoming

Today’s server shutdown paves the way for the arrival of Season 2’s last challenger.

sfv_street_fighter_v_logo_fancy

Street Fighter V players know the routine: new content means a shutdown of SFV’s online functions for a good chunk of the day. Today, the servers will be under maintenance between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM PT.

Our reward this time, once servers are back up, is the arrival of the final Season 2 DLC character: Zeku. Some new premium sports-themed costumes — for Karin, Zangief, and Kolin — will be made available to purchase as well.

Chomp on some bananas with Sasquatch in The Nostalgic Gamer’s “Meet the Darkstalkers”

After ending his 11-month hiatus with a pair of recent videos covering Huitzil and Rikuo, The Nostalgic Gamer has continued with another episode of his “Meet the Darkstalkers” series. This time he looks at one of the series’ original — and arguably the most powerful character in Darkstalkers 3 — Sasquatch.

Devised as an homage to the yetis, bigfoots (bigfeet?), and abominable snowmen of folklore, Sasquatch is a fun-loving creature “who just loves being his absurd self.” With his tribe’s initial plans for world domination literally thrown off by their taste for delicious bananas (and object designer Mizue Morimoto’s attempts to base his move animations off of some of the ludicrous feats seen in Disney cartoons), Sasquatch went from originally being a violent, cyclops-type creature to the free-spirited, adorable, friendly and fun-loving yeti that we know today. And don’t forget the variety of aquatic companions that he can summon from the world of Makai to aid him in battle: ranging from flying penguins to seals, whales, and snowmen.

Any competitive Darkstalkers player is certainly familiar with the “village protector” due to his powerful short hop shenanigans and terrifying pressure, but now you can get to know a bit more about his tribe and their history.

Be sure to head over to the comments section of the video to let The Nostalgic Gamer know which remaining Darkstalker you’d like to meet next.

When Blanka Met Fei Long: Here is one of the craziest super interactions in Super Street Fighter II Turbo

Getting nearly-simultaneous Super Combos in Super Street Fighter II Turbo is very difficult, given the fact that the Super freeze can eat your opponent’s inputs. When they do happen, we can see some really interesting interactions.

In this match-up from Japan featuring Blanka and Fei Long, both are nearing a sliver of health, when Fei scores a knockdown to bring Blanka down to chip damage to win. With both having Super stocked, Fei launches his as a meaty to chip out. In an attempt to escape, Blanka executes a Super just in time to miss the meaty hit. Between two Supers with an insane amount of invincibility, which one wins?

Dominate the Duel Phase with Pokkén Tournament DX’s Scizor combos

In Pokkén Tournament DX, Scizor hits hard and stylishly with air-dashes, just frame inputs, and jump cancels. This type of character’s combos will keep your hands busy, but raw damage isn’t the only thing you should be thinking about when playing this Bug Bruiser.

With access to a combo ender like Bug Bite, Scizor can steal status effects and drain health and meter from the opponent. Couple this with his mobility options and full screen Bullet Punch, Scizor isn’t just brutal: he’s versatile.

So put in some practice time with 21 Hits‘s latest Scizor video and you’ll be ready to squash your opponents like… well, you know.
