Shoryuken interview: Dora_Bang talks about playing BlazBlue: Central Fiction

Left: PG|SKD. Center: PNS|Garireo. Right: r/Kappa|Dora_Bang.

CEOtaku 2017, a very important tournament for anime games in the United States, brought a good deal of international competition this time around. Thanks to an r/Kappa sponsorship, Dora_Bang made it to the tournament. For a Japanese player, he’s quite famous in the United States. Dora_Bang not only streams often — lately on Twitch — but he also makes helpful content, often in English. He’s known for his fun personality and a tendency for frequent money matching.

I caught up with Dora right after the BlazBlue: Central Fiction Grand Finals at CEOtaku 2017. Dora_Bang ended up second, right after PNS|Garireo.

Interview conducted through a translator provided by Aksys Games. Edited for clarity.

Woocash: Talk to us about the Grand Finals in BlazBlue.

Dora_Bang: During the Winners Finals, of course I beat Garireo with ease. But Garireo was in a sort of bad tempo, so it wasn’t his best condition. Even during Evo, Garireo made comebacks just like this. I really wanted to fight him on equal terms when he’s doing his very best. That’s what I want to do in the future too.

Woocash: Tell us more about some of the top 8 matches you were having.

Dora_Bang: One of the top 3 strongest players, other than me and Garireo, SKD. I really felt on edge there throughout the fight, I felt like I couldn’t aim for an Astral Finish or Distortion Finish. He’s really one of the best players among the top. In my first fight against Garireo, I was able to do all my combos correctly. But when he regained his composure, I was having trouble, I was missing my combos sometimes. It’s just that if I’m not fighting a great player, I won’t understand my own weaknesses. That really got to me in the middle of the fight when the reset happened.

When you corner Garireo, he’ll start doing wake-up throws [Dora means that instead of Dragon Punching, Garireo would start throwing Dora while getting up. Bang’s Drive can block and go through Dragon Punches.] I realized that sometimes I don’t think, and I just reflexively jump up-back and Barrier.

Woocash: Why do you think you lost to him?

Dora_Bang: One of the reasons I lost is because I wanted to see him after the reset. It’s not that I let him win, but it’s a mindset. I wanted to see how strong he would be after the reset. That’s something I learned today, too. This big money match, even though I lost it, I wanted to see what would happen. It’s a new mindset I’m looking at right now.

Woocash: You recently made a tier list of BlazBlue characters. Any new thoughts on it? Having played in the States here a bit, any new opinions?

Dora_Bang: I don’t feel there should be any new changes to the tier chart. I noticed that in the US, there aren’t many Arakune players. Since it’s a bit hard to tell with Arakune. So this time, I feel that the balance is really good, because you can’t tell who’s going to win just by looking at characters.

Woocash: Why do you like money-matching so much?

Dora_Bang: In a money match, you’re betting on something. It puts people on the line. They get more nervous and they show more fighting spirit. That’s why I like it, because it puts people on nerve. If you’re just playing casuals, you’re only fighting. You don’t know if the opponent is playing for fun or to improve. But in a money match, most people are going to be on edge. I think it’s good for players to grow.

Woocash: What in the United States has surprised you the most?

Dora_Bang: Game-wise, I’m surprised how strong SKD is. Also, I saw a lot of squirrels yesterday. I saw a lot of wildlife in Florida.

Woocash: How are you liking coming to the States? You’ve recently come to Evolution 2017 as well.

Dora_Bang: It’s super fun! Japanese people are a bit more shy or passive. In the US, people will come talk to you. That’s why I like to come more. The community is more talkative.

Woocash: Any other comments?

Dora_Bang: I stream on Twitch, so please watch it!

X-Kira’s latest datamining video reveals new costumes, stages and modes coming to Street Fighter V

After releasing a mock-up video of what Street Fighter’s V long rumored Arcade Mode may look like, infamous dataminer X-Kira has made another video, examining the files of the game’s recent update to reveal more content that will be coming to the game in the future.

To begin, he notes that in addition to Zeku, who will complete the title’s Season 2 roster, several Premium Costumes are in the works. Specifically, there will be:

  • Eight costumes for Chun-Li
  • Seven for Kolin
  • Five for Karin
  • Three for Ryu, Ken, Rashid, R. Mika, Balrog and Akuma
  • Two for M. Bison, Zangief, Nash, Vega and Laura
  • One for Cammy, Alex and Birdie

Moving on to the topic of additional DLC Stages, X-Kira states that Birdie’s Street Fighter Alpha 2 stage will be making a return, along with a brand new Russia stage for Kolin, similar to what can be seen in her official character artwork. Ed will receive a Neo Shadaloo stage, Menat will get an Egyptian themed stage, R. Mika will have her own wrestling ring and F.A.N.G’s unique stage will be themed around the Nguuhao cartel.

Urien’s stage will be based off the Olmec Ruins stage from Third Strike, Ken’s is based off his stage from Street Fighter II while Nash will receive a remake of his Alpha 2 stage. The iconic Grassy Field stage from Street Fighter Alpha 2 is also set to return. Sadly, no word on the return of Dhalsim, Zangief or Chun-Li’s classic Street Fighter II stages.

Lastly, X-Kira claims that Extra Battle, Dojo and Dramatic Battle — most recently seen in Ultra Street Fighter II and the Street Fighter Alpha series — will be making a return. He also notes that a Street Fighter III: Third Strike BGM Pack, similar to the Street Fighter II Music Pack that was released earlier this week will be on the way soon, with many of the rumored costumes arriving as early as next month.

These are all certainly intriguing developments that paint a very bright picture for the overall future of Street Fighter V. Of this leaked content, which part excites you the most? Are their other things you’d like to see added to the game that weren’t revealed in this data mining? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.

Capcom Pro Tour EU Regional Finals at Milan Games Week streaming live from Milan, Italy

The Capcom Pro Tour is slowly winding down to its conclusion. This weekend is the Europe Regional Finals at Milan Games Week in Italy. The competition ultimately boils down to eight players: seven from the top of the EU leaderboards, and one from the last chance qualifier on Saturday.

Qualified Players

The Regional Finals is a chance at a guaranteed spot in Capcom Cup. Regardless of performance on the global leaderboard, the winner of each Regional Final will make it to the Capcom Cup Finals. This is an important point for players outside of the Top 30 on the global board.

The competition starts off with the Last Chance Open Qualiifer on Saturday and concludes with the finals proper on Sunday. Some of the players entered into the qualifier include Takamura and CCL. To catch the action live, head to the Capcom Fighters channel on Twitch.

Check out IKevinX’s Dragon Ball FighterZ character concepts for Hit, Beerus, Goku Black and Zamasu

Taking a break from his anime and manga reference videos for the playable cast of Dragon Ball FighterZ, IKevinX has begun creating a series of character concept videos for characters he’d like to see in the game: specifically, Dragon Ball Super‘s Legendary Assassin of Universe 6, Hit; Beerus, the Universe 7 God of Destruction; and the devious pair of Goku Black and Zamasu, who seek to deliver divine justice with the eradication of all mortal beings.

These videos utilize references from both the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga in order to give viewers his personal idea of what these fighters could do if they were to make it into the game, with everything ranging from the intros and victory animations, to the entire moveset of normals, specials and supers. He even has a creative idea in imaging how Goku Black and Zamasu could work as a tandem character — similarly to how Androids 17 and 18 were implemented — that I’d really like to see come to fruition, as it seems like something Arc System Works and Bandai Namco Entertainment could successfully pull off. You can see all three videos below.

What do you think of these character concepts? Would you like to see these four represent Dragon Ball Super in Dragon Ball FighterZ? Are there any other character concept videos you’d like to see from IKevinX? Let us know in the comments.

Dragon Ball FighterZ will be released in February 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC, in both standard and CollectorZ Editions. An Open Beta test will be held closer to the game’s release — with pre-orders gaining early access to it, as well as early unlocks for Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku and Vegeta, along with two exclusive online lobby avatars.
