Red Bull Proving Grounds Returns with New Regions and Two Seasons

Training Day begins now!

The Red Bull Proving Grounds tournament returns in 2017 and this time, even more players will have the opportunity to take part in the competition thanks to additional regions and two tournament seasons. Amateur players will test their skill in Street Fighter V to prove they have what it takes to go toe to toe with the pros at Evo 2017.

The new tournament will consist of events taking place in 11 locations across the US and Canada. Returning venues include Seattle, WA, Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, Philadelphia PA, Atlanta GA, and Toronto, ON. New locations include Houston, TX, Orlando, FL, San Francisco, CA, Vancouver, BC, Montreal, QC. Those unable to attend the qualifiers locally will have the chance to compete online to take their place among the greats.

East vs. West

To qualify for the finals, players must place among the top three in their respective region. This is decided based on one’s Regional Ranking Points. Those players will be flown to the Red Bull eSports Studio in Santa Monica, CA to compete in the finals. The top 8 winners of the Spring Season will earn their spots to compete at Evo 2017 in Las Vegas.

Lay Down the Law: For Honor’s Lawbringer Guides and Glitches

As it stands right now, For Honor’s meta is largely defensive. Play is centered around the strength of reactions, to greatly reduce your opponent’s options, and taking advantage of stamina drain from 50/50 situations. It just so happens this is what the Lawbringer, arguably the game’s most defensive character, excels in.

YouTuber Evil Canadian has put together two great guides to playing the polearm-wielding class. Starting with the basics and working up, these videos cover his strengths, weaknesses, and general thought processes during battle.

Additionally, Evil Canadian recorded and explained how the controversial Unlock Glitch impacts Lawbringer. Unlocking mid-combo in For Honor sometimes allow characters to perform some combos they otherwise normally can’t–and in this instance, the unlock bug allows Lawbringer to get some small guaranteed damage off of his main pressure tool, the unblockable shove.

Japanese Skullgirls 2nd Encore Tournament Showcases Consistent Improvement and Support

Japanese Skullgirls players are quite interesting to watch. They have a completely unique way of playing the game, one that’s fresh after years of watching American play. Recently an offline Skullgirls event was held in Japan on February 25th, on the PC version of the game–likely due to the latest patch not yet arriving on consoles.

You can watch the compiled footage from this event below, as posted on スカルガールズ対戦会. They still have a ways to go, ironing out their play styles and tightening up their combos and setups, but it’s flat out refreshing to see completely unseen tactics like using Cerebella’s s.hk assist. It’s exciting waiting for their play to evolve, and see just how far they’ll take these options–that USA players rarely consider.

Michael Martin Talks with Alex Jebailey in Conversations and Fireballs

One of the busiest men in the FGC at this point is CEO’s Alex Jebailey. On top of running his own line of events, Jebailey is also currently involved in running the fighting game events for Dreamhack.

He recently sat down to talk to Michael Martin of Yahoo Esports in the latest episode of Conversations and Fireballs. In this episode, they talk about what he is learning with DreamHack. They also talk about the updated changes to Capcom Pro Tour; Jebailey thinks that the lack of automatic qualifiers will be a welcome change to the tour.

Learn New Characters and Tech in The King of Fighters XIV with This Multi-Character Roundup

The King of Fighters XIV is riding a solid wave of momentum as of late. With the KOF World Championships recently concluding–along with the announcement of new content–it’s never been a better time to learn the game.

However, with a staggering roster of 50 characters–that is set to expand even morein the future–choosing a team of three can prove quite the challenge. Fortunately, the community for the SNK fighter has a wealth of content creators making tutorials and guides for the various cast members, to introduce them to new players. We’ve collected some great recent content here in this roundup.

Following his coverage of Leona Heidern, Ra3bones continues his Beginner Breakdowns by looking at the two remaining members of the Ikari Warriors Team, Clark Still and Ralf Jones. He’s also covered the first member of the Fatal Fury team, Joe Higashi. These Tutorials give a basic overview of each character’s tools, from their normals, to what they can do off throws, specials, supers and cancels, along with some basic combos. This should provide any player a good starting point with these characters; timestamps are included so viewers can come back to any section for review. You can see all three guides below.

Following their Chin Gentsai video, the COMBONAUTS bring us combo exhibitions for Geese Howard and–everyone’s favorite shrine maiden–Nakoruru!

For those interested in a bit of KOF lore, they’ve also got videos of several character’s win quotes in both English and Spanish. K’s are below.

Keep an eye on both these channels for more KOF content!

Day 3 of #KolinLab: New Tech, Combos, and Discoveries for Kolin in Street Fighter V

With day 3 of the new ice queen in the books, Kolin is shaping up quite nicely. As with every character release, we’re seeing everyone hitting the lab–and some amazing tech and combos are emerging to help aspiring Kolin players level up fast to be on par with everyone else. So here’s some more great Kolin findings for you to make use of.

First, we have Nurselee showing off some amazing meaty options off of Frost Touch. As explained in the video, low and mid parries have interchangeable setups, and Frost Touch results in a hard knockdown, thus giving you plenty of time to set up your meaty.

Next up is a video showcasing some of Kolin’s bread and butter combos, as well as some more setups and conversions off of snowball stuns.

Next, we have a combo video sent in by Brain Kasugano. While it is short but sweet, it shows how strong Kolin’s combo potential and flexibility truly is, and is quite impressive given how early it is into the character’s life.

A lot of players have struggled with finding reliable anti-airs with Kolin. However, she does have an impeccable anti-air game, and VesperArcade goes into great detail on what moves deal with what air attacks in this video.

Finally, we have none other than TS|Poongko showing off his Kolin in this Ranked match compilation. Poongko has done well with Cammy since starting in Street Fighter V, but after seeing this video, one has to think that he may have found his Seth in this game.

HORI Officially Announces Fight Stick for Nintendo Switch

Even more ways to play!

A little while back there was a leak that showcased potential peripherals from HORI that could be used on the newest Nintendo console. Among these was a HORI fight stick designed for the system. HORI has now announced on its official Twitter page that it will indeed be releasing a Nintendo Switch version of its popular Real Arcade Pro V Hayabusa fight stick. No further details were disclosed, but one can expect it will retain the features of the recently released 2017 version of the stick for other consoles.

It’s fantastic to see HORI proceeding forward with the fight stick in order to accommodate players who prefer this “traditional” style of control. Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers will feel much better to much of the fanbase with a fight stick on hand.
