CROW BITES: Samurai Shodown V Special’s recoil cancel

Hello Internet, here are some CROW BITES for you. This is a series for weird trivia and glitches I’ve encountered in my life of fightin’ gamin’. Last time, we talked about the unique stun system of Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2. Today, to celebrate the recently-announced Samurai Shodown, I’m looking back to a mechanic that defines much of the series: recoil canceling.

The fundamentals of 2-in-1 combos in most 2D fighters gets turned on its head in Samurai Shodown V Special. The cancel windows are often tight and occur late in the animation of a move — particularly on block, when characters go into a specific recoil animation. This “recoil cancel” isn’t just a combo tool, it is the foundation by which decision-making is based around when playing the game.

Dragon Ball FighterZ and Tekken 7 are on sale on PC

For anyone thinking of picking up some of Bandai Namco’s best fighting games on PC, a couple of them are on sale right now: both Dragon Ball FighterZ and Tekken 7 are discounted over at DL Gamer.

All of Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s various editions are all 50% off on DL Gamer. The standard edition is now only $30, meanwhile the FighterZ Edition, which includes all the DLC characters for season 1, is only $47.49. Of course, the game’s Ultimate Edition, which comes with the 8 DLC characters (as well as the Anime Music Pack and Commentator Voice Pack) is now only $54.99.

In addition to these, Tekken 7 is also on sale at DL Gamer. The game’s regular edition is subject to a 50% discount, bringing its price down to $20.00. It’s Ultimate Edition, however, is discounted by only 5%, bringing its price down to $85.49, down from $89.99.

2018 Tekken World Tour Online Week One Events Results

Late last month, the 2018 Tekken World Tour brought the King of Iron Fist Tournament to the battleground of cyberspace, as several online events were held in each region over a two week period. As we continuously approach the 2018 TWT Finals in Amsterdam this December, the stakes were high — these events carried the same weight as offline Challenger events.

First up, we’ll take a look at the results for the first four tournaments held during the first week of competition: North America West, which boasted 125 entrants, North America East, which had 218 players, Latin America North, which drew 29 fighters, LATAM South, with 45 entrants, and Australia, which had 18 attendees. Unfortunately, there were no official streams for these events, but players were encouraged to broadcast their battles via their individual Twitch channels, so archives of select bouts may be floating around depending on the players.

Tekken 7 is a complex game, no one will ever deny that. With over 40 characters that have 100+ moves each, there’s not only a lot of information to know, but a lot of information to prioritize. Capcom Pro Tour Online Ranking Event North America East 1 results and replays

With only one region now remaining, the Online portion of the 2018 Capcom Pro Tour held its penultimate event last weekend, with the first Online Ranking Event for Eastern North America. As such, a whopping 252 players showed up to battle from the comfort of their homes for their first shot at those ever-crucial ranking points for both the Global and Regional Leaderboards.

Eligible States included: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador.

Capcom Pro Tour Online Ranking Event Asia East 2 results and replays

Two weeks ago, the online portion of the 2018 Capcom Pro Tour made its second stop in the Eastern Asia region. 145 World Warriors from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea gathered to battle in the streets of the internet. As this was the final Online event for Asia as a whole — as well as the final chance to secure Regional Ranking points before the Asian Regional Final at this weekend’s SEAM 2018 in Singapore — the stakes were undeniably high.

Gravity Breakers updates to version 0.4.0, offers free demo, and adds four-armed cultist Valeria to its cast

The last we heard from the in-development perma-flying PC fighter Gravity Breakers, developers Gremlin_Ent had scored legendary video game composer Shinji Hosoe to write the game’s opening song. Since then, the team has been hard at work pushing the game forward: Gravity Breakers has recently been updated to version 0.4.0, and along with the several system and balance changes in this update, this indie sci-fi project has also ramped up the weird alien sex-appeal with the beefy four-armed cultist, Valeria.

Easily the most ripped female character design we’ve seen in fighting games for some time, Valeria can materialize an entire arsenal of weapons to fling at her opponent. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it doesn’t look like you’re going to be any safer once you get in range, either:

Arcade UFO Weekly streaming Tekken 7 live from Austin, Texas

Arcade UFO has served as the stomping grounds for the Austin, TX FGC for a decade now. First formed in 2008, it has produced top players in a wide range of games and hosted events for SBO Qualifiers, Namco’s Tekken Tag 2 location tests, and more. With a growing scene for Tekken 7 that has drawn top players from surrounding cities like San Antonio and Houston, Arcade UFO has now moved into regular streaming for its growing weeklies. Every Saturday at 8:30 PM CT/ 6:30 PM PT is Tekken, and you can watch right now:

Final Showdown demonstrates massive damage for the team of Vegito, Teen Gohan, and Goku in Dragon Ball FighterZ

For the past couple of months, combo video wizard Final Showdown has been focusing on a Vegito, Teen Gohan, and Goku in Dragon Ball FighterZ.  With this in mind, it’s no surprise that he’s come up with ways to make these characters work together in combos.

The video below showcases the massive damage that this team can pull off, including Touch-of-death combos that do not use Sparking Blast.

In addition to this, Final Showdown has also shared a couple of older videos with combos for the same team. While the combos don’t always reach the heights that those in the video above do, they do showcase the concepts and ideas that he’s been working on.

Director Yohei Shimbori breaks down Dead Or Alive 6’s neutral game in Free Step Dodge interview

If you want to get a great break down of how an upcoming game is shaping up, then there’s no better people to ask than those who play said game competitively. This is what we have with a new, in depth, break down of Dead Or Alive 6‘s neutral game from Free Step Dodge’s Matt Ponton.

We’ve known about some of the many changes to Dead Or Alive 6 for some time now. In their latest article, Matt explains how these changes affect the game’s neutral in a way only a long time competitive player can. Long story short: the removal of mechanics such as Stagger Escape, Critical Threshold, as well as the reduction of Critical State means that DOA6 puts a much bigger focus on neutral over the stun game, making it feel much closer to Dead Or Alive 2 and Dead Or Alive 3 than it does to the prior 2 incarnations.He also puts the focus on certain mechanics that people have overlooked. This includes the Break Blow Cancel mechanic, which allows players to cancel out of a Break Blow to extend their combos, while retaining the Fatal Stun from it.

On top of the breakdown, there’s also a short interview he has with director Yohei Shimbori and community manager (and top player) Emmanuel “Master” Rodriguez. The interview covers a lot of ground regarding the design of Dead Or Alive 6‘s neutral game. This includes the series’ lack of throw breaks (and how they might add them in) and tweaks to the ground game. Additionally, Shimbori also confirms that a certain character who many thought dead after the events of DOA5 is still alive.
