A Japanese player modded a Mikado arcade cabinet to use console pads
Traveling to Japan, the mecca of fighting games, carries one condition with it: it’s better if you’re a player who can use arcade sticks, or else you won’t be able to perform at your best at numerous arcade centers you’ll want to visit. Though some tournaments in Japan ran on consoles, for the most part, you have to know how to play on a stick. But this could change in the future, and one person is showing a successful modding of an arcade cabinet that allows players to use some console pads.

TMF posted on Twitter about how they used a USB decoder to hook up pads onto a Mikado arcade cabinet. In further tweets, they said that PS3 and Xbox 360 tended to be less stable and more buggy, and of course, they have to remain wired.
Here’s a video of this in action, with the pad working and using a macro in Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2:
ギルティにパッド勢からの要望でロマキャンボタン取り付けました。L1で発動します。アケコン使った場合もL1で発動します。
新品レバーでも好みのメーカーや個体差で納得がいかないことも色々経験してきましたが、自分の中の1つの答えだと思っています。

And here’s another video from Joniosan which shows a player successfully using this to play matches:

Maybe there’s hope for a future when pad and stick players alike can play on any platform, regardless of preference? This could be an important, first step for arcades to start including USB ports that let pad players bring their own devices.
“Footsies” fighting mini-game is now available for Android
As recently reported, HiFight has released their own fundamentalized, footsies-based fighting game, simply called Footsies. Now, for anyone who saw the game’s simple control scheme and thought “this would be perfect for mobile,” it turns out you’re absolutely right.
HiFight has announced that Footsies is now available for mobile devices running on Android OS. The game’s mobile version features the same gameplay as the PC original. However, it makes use of the mobile touch screen format to allow for two players to play on a single device!
FOOTSIES v1.0.2 is now available on Android Play Store!!!!

As you can see from the tweet above, multiplayer takes advantage of the mobile touch screen format, using it to create a split screen, head-to-head layout. Both players simply hold different ends of the device to literally face off against each other.

– The Culling 2 Cancelled After Just Over a Week, Original Brought Back to ‘Day One’
Xaviant Games has made a startling announcement: The Culling 2, that launched just eight days ago, has been cancelled after a horrific debut netting tons of negative reviews and with a lackluster population. As a result, the team has cancelled the game and taken the much more popular The Culling (the original game) back to “day one” — that time before players felt developers abandoned the game for the now-defunct second version.
Over 1,000 people are registered for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle at Evo 2018 — but the matches won’t be 3/5
BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the youngest game to enter the main stage of Evolution 2018, and so its first year will be sort of a test run. One of the prevailing topics in the community has been whether the game should berun as 3 out of 5 rounds, particularly since every fight is just one “match,” and some of those can go by quickly. While some have been pushing for that to be the case, there’s an official response from Mr. Wizard and Tom Cannon: the game will run at 2 out of 3 rounds due to time constraints.
Here’s the reasoning Tom Cannon provided via Twitter:
Evo BBTag pools rules: 24 players per pool. 4 game setups per pool. Top 3 per pool advance. To run this pool from 24 -> 3 players, it takes 12 "waves" of players playing on the 4 setups.
— Tom Cannon (@ProtomCannon) July 18, 2018
Multiply by 12 waves and we get 2 hrs, 6 min, 7 secs. At Evo we must complete each pool in 1 hr, 45 min to stay on schedule. So, running 3/5 would put us roughly 21 minutes behind schedule for every round of pools! And this is if everything runs perfectly and on time.
— Tom Cannon (@ProtomCannon) July 18, 2018
Finally, he linked the data provided by community member and commentator EbonicPlague, who recorded a sample of match lengths.

On the bright side, the interest in BBTAG is quite noticeable; I’m not sure anyone predicted that over 1,000 people would be entering the Evo 2018 tournament. If you’re not one of those, make haste, as there is still time to register for Evo 2018.
BlazBlue tag battle has over 1k entries. We are going to keep pools 2/3 for now, and if we see a significant amount of matches coming in quickly, we will re-evaluate moving everything to 3/5 for quarters and semis.

Nintendo has confirmed via Twitter that they will be bringing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to the San Diego Comic Con for attendees to get try out. The game will be playable at both their booth on the show floor, as well as at the Nintendo Gaming Lounge inside the Marriott Marquis & Marina.

In addition to this, Nintendo is giving players chances to skip the inevitable lines. At the event, if a player tweets with the hashtag #BringMeSmash and it gets seen, then they can get a golden ticket that allows them to move to the front of the line.
Finally, they’re hosting the 64-player Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Arcadian Teen Tournament as well. This tournament, which is open to players from 13 to 19 years of age, will be held on July 21.

Dragon Ball FighterZ getting base form Goku and Vegeta, Switch open beta in early August
It seems like big things are coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ, this coming August. Not only are two new characters coming into the game, but the Switch port is getting an open beta.
Bandai Namco Games has announced that base form Goku and base form Vegeta are coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ as DLC in early August. This shouldn’t be surprising, as back in February, data miners had found hints pointing to them being added as part of of the game’s season pass.
Both characters will feature unique moves that their other versions don’t have; base form Vegeta will have his “Galick Gun” energy blast, as well as his “Galaxy Breaker” which he used to finish off Nappa in the Saiyan Saga. Meanwhile, base Goku will be able to use his Kaio-ken, which he can power up from times 3 up to times 20 when a teammate falls. Of course, he’ll also bring his “Super Spirit Bomb”, which is stated to be the most powerful of all moves, but trades this off by being slow.
Both fighters are set to be available in early August and will be available for purchase for ¥500 in Japan, or about $4.99 in the US.
In addition to the two characters, Dragon Ball FighterZ’s Switch port will be getting an open beta in August as well. This beta will feature 3-on-3 battle locally.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is currently available for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One with the Switch port is set to arrive on September 28.

Learn behind-the-scenes details about Street Fighter: The Movie in this closer look from The Guardian
Quick, change the channel!
Many people who love fighting games will claim the live-action Street Fighter: The Movie — starring Raul Julia, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Ming-Na Wen — as a guilty pleasure. It is one of those movies that is so bad it’s good in many eyes, while many others will still roll their eyes in disgust at the mere mention of it.
Regardless, there’s a lot of lore as to why the movie turned out the way it did, including pressure from Capcom in creating the Sawada role, filming issues within Thailand — which was in civil unrest during filming — and Van Damme’s cocaine addiction at the time. All of this and more is chronicled in The Guardian’s look at the film. The movie remains a top-grosser for Van Damme — and according to the director, the humor isn’t accidental: they were well-aware that they were making a funny movie.
