ELEAGUE Street Fighter V Invitational recap: Highlights and quotes from Group A

The 2018 ELEAGUE Street Fighter V Invitational began in dramatic fashion with Group A on Friday as Echo Fox|Tokido and CO|Dogura fought through one of the event’s toughest groups to capture the two playoff berths. In a Group A with 2 Evo champions, 2 Evo runner-ups and the defending Capcom Cup champion, there was no doubt the competition would be fierce.

The pressure of being the defending Capcom Cup champion is clearly not lost on RISE|MenaRD, who had the most passionate moment of the Group A competition when he quit playing before the full ending of his elimination match with Dogura. The Japanese Urien player has won their last three sets, going back to last week’s Combo Breaker, where he eliminated Mena to earn a spot in top 8. Playing with a weaker Birdie in season three Mena has still produced results, but he may be developing a personal demon in Dogura.

Speaking to Shoryuken before the tournament, Mena said he appreciates the opportunity to prepare for invitational events like ELEAGUE.

“At versus say Akuma, in an open tournament you might say I’m going to study the tools that Akuma has, because who knows? Maybe I’ll fight an Akuma on the road to top 8. But this event format we know exactly who we’re fighting, so it’s not just Akuma, it’s Tokido’s Akuma, it’s a big advantage in my opinion.”

SonicBoxx|JB was the only player in Group A with no Capcom Cup experience, having earned his way into Group A on ELEAGUE’s The Challenger reality show competition. He adapted quickly to the big stage, earning a spot in on the winners side of the elimination bracket with a 3-2 record in the round robin. However when it was time to play for keeps, JB struggled to find his footing, losing 3-0 to both Tokido and Dogura.

“I see it as basically any other event,” JB said before his matches. “I don’t look at the level of players they are, I just try to believe that at some point I can be at their level. I practice all the same, I wont be afraid or anything like that. I feel confident coming into this group.”

ARES.RB|Luffy impressed with an undefeated showing in the group’s round robin phase, scoring multiple perfects; but he failed to capitalize on the top seed in the elimination bracket. Sticking with R.Mika for a third year, Luffy proved that the Rainbow Bomber still has what it takes to compete at the game’s highest level, even after her fall from popularity last season.

In contrast to Mena, Luffy said he didn’t want to over-prepare for ELEAGUE. “You know the openings you know the match-ups, but then it’s Street Fighter V,” he told SRK. “So I prepare against the match-up but against the type of player that can change their gameplan really quickly, studying how they play might be a double-edged sword. Like yeah, I know he’s going to play like this, but he might change because he knows I’m studying. For me I think it’s better to not study at all and just go by the flow.”

CYG BST|PR Balrog had the toughest day in Group A, going 0-5 in the round robin before being eliminated by Dogura in the bracket. PR Balrog is still making the adjustment to Akuma as his main character, and with the Group A participants already preparing for Tokido, he was left with a mountain of match-up experience to overcome. As a veteran of American Street Fighter, Perez said opportunities like ELEAGUE are an important platform for professional players.

“In an open bracket anything can happen, and I feel like open brackets are good for newer players. But to show the pro player’s skill, I feel that invitationals are amazing because we can prepare for each other. You can see how much the player has prepared, how much hard work the person has put in. So I think overall, there should be a few more [invitationals], because there’s just three or four. It’s important for us as professionals because we can actually show what we can do.”

Regarded by many as the most consistent Street Fighter V player in the world, Echo Fox|Tokido came out of the gate looking strong, beating SonicBoxx|JB and ARES.RB|Luffy to qualify for the ELEAGUE playoffs from the winners bracket; though Luffy’s R.Mika showed some cracks in Tokido’s defense, he will surely remain one of the favorites to win the whole thing.

After starting the round robin with a 1-4 record, Dogura ran the gauntlet in the elimination bracket to claim a playoff spot in losers. Speaking to Shoryuken before the Group A matches, Dogura said he was most concerned about Tokido in the group, as Tokido’s Akuma frequently beats him in casual matches. Luckily he was able to qualify for the playoff without having to face off against the defending Evo champion.

Next weekend we’ll see Group B — Echo Fox|Punk, Echo Fox|Momochi, NVD|Phenom, CYG BST|Fuudo, 801 Strider, and Commander Jesse — fight for two of their players to reach top 8 on June 8th.

BornFree catches up with Momochi at Combo Breaker 2018 to talk about Cody, and the Goku family

Street Fighter V, Dragon Ball FighterZ… and a Splatoon 2 team!

It seems one of the Street Fighter greats has a new love — but Echo Fox|Momochi feels it’s possible to enjoy both Street Fighter V and Dragon Ball FighterZ, and he’s out to do just that. BornFree spoke with Momochi at last weekend’s Combo Breaker 2018, and they discussed many interesting things: such as the professional player’s perspective on incoming balance patches (they’re terrifying), his love of all things Dragon Ball, and his thoughts on Cody’s impending arrival in Street Fighter V. Momochi is also considering expanding his Shinobism fighting game school to include foreign players!

Arc System Works releases notes regarding community content creation related to BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

Many players already have their hands on the full version of BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. Japan already has the game, and players from other countries are welcome to purchase that version as well. Given that the US release of the title is drawing near, and more and more content about the game is appearing, Arc System Works provided a note with a few do’s and don’t’s on this matter.

It’s okay to:

  • Stream any kind of matches, online, offline, etc.
  • Create combo videos, guides, tutorials, and similar.
  • Per their words: “Show us those online shenanigans, dance parties, and the like.”

It’s NOT okay to:

  • Stream or record Episode Mode (Story Mode). At the very most, they are OK with content up to Chapter 2, but they would prefer this is entirely avoided.
  • Stream or uploaded ripped songs; posting soundtrack content from the game.

No-one wants to content ID or ban YouTube creators or Twitch streamers, so Arc System Works kindly asks to comply with these guidelines.

Read the full note on the Arc System Works website. BBTAG is already out in Asia, and will release in the American region on June 5th, followed by Europe later this month.

Hidden character balance changes found in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition’s latest patch

While the recent Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition patch was supposedly just to add some new costumes, it seems that there have been some slight character adjustments made as well. OminousGames, who has  been keeping track of the hidden changes in the SFVAE since version 3.03, recently updated their list with some of the hidden changes that have been found in the new patch.

The character who seems to have gotten the largest number of changes is Falke. The biggest change for her is a fix to her divekick that should prevent the freeze glitch that saw Falke get stuck in the air. [Capcom published this particular change post-patch. – Editor] Other changes include making it easier for her to hit some combos, and some changes to the hitboxes of her V-Trigger II.

In addition to this, it seems Abigail and Laura also got some hidden changes. The former received some changes to the buffer for his back roll out of Nitro Charge when V-Trigger I is active, giving the command run priority. The latter on the other had some changes to her V-Trigger II. Specifically, dodging out of it no longer autocorrects, however the grab and dash follow ups will now autocorrect.

Here’s the list of changes that OminousGames has found.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition hidden changes

Abigail
+ VT1 Nitro Charge back roll buffer reduced in order to not have overlap with the run. (AKA the run command now has priority during a tap of the buttons instead of a back roll. could fix the run not able to cancel)

Falke
* Divekick might have had kara tag removed to fix the freeze glitch
+ Falke KKK 2nd Hit 2nd & 3rd attack frames JI & JL reduced to match 1st (easier to extend juggles and more consistently hits)
+ Falke VT2 PP-> d.HPHK (leaping strike) forces changed (increased Horizontal range by 2-3 squares)
– Falke VT2 PP-> d.HPHK (leaping strike) forces changed (her Hurtbox does not avoid standing attacks as easily during leap)
? There are some unknown changes to VT2 start and VT2C

Laura
– VT2 command grab +9 frames of recovery on whiff
+/- VT2 Dodge no longer autocorrects (this decreases the pushback from Laura during an autocorrecting dodge)
+ VT2 grab & dash follow ups now have autocorrect (a dodge that has not autocorrected properly will now autocorrect during its follow up)

You can check out OminousGames complete list of changes since the 3.1 patch here.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle’s Kanji can glitch out a win with his lightning attacks

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is already out in Japan, so certain people have their hands on characters from Character Pack 1 that weren’t in the beta: Kanji, Orie, Platinum, and Blake. Since these characters were not in the beta, it may not be so surprising that people discovered a game-winning bug with Persona 4‘s Bloodcurling Beefcake, Kanji.

UltraTien posted a clip of the bug, which they can intentionally trigger. The unfortunate victim of the online match ends up eternally frozen in a lightning shock, unable to even Cross Burst out of this. All that remains is to wait until the timer runs out. This exploit works with Kanji and either Blake or Jin, a tipper told SRK in a message. It seems to happen from Kanji’s command grab, and then an assist from either of the two characters — they’ve tested other fighters, but it only worked with Blake or Jin.

The BBTAG beta also saw a partner bug which let a player control both characters at once. Let’s hope Arc System Works is gathering information, and that they will rectify Kanji’s “secret weapon” as soon as possible.

Thanks to Emily for sending in the tip.

Leak indicates that a Nintendo Switch port of Dragon Ball FighterZ may be announced at E3

If there’s one thing that some fans have been requesting regarding Dragon Ball FighterZ, it’s a port of the game for Nintendo’s Switch console-portable hybrid. Now, it seems that that wish may come true, at least if a new leak turns out to be true.

The leaks comes from a photo first posted on 4chan and ResetEra, that has since been picked up by a number of news outlets. The leak supposedly comes from someone whose job involves making showroom displays, and lists a number of games aside from Dragon Ball FighterZ.

While it’s easy to doubt leaks such as these, other sources, specifically the news outlets Destructoid and Kotaku, have stated that they are confident in these leaks. According to them, they align with what their own sources have told them (including embargoed confirmations of the titles). This is on top of one of the Twitter account for Killer Queen (one of the other games in the list) suddenly changing all the images on it to all-black, which seems to align with the “Killer Queen Black” listing on the leak.

For those interested, you can check out the supposedly-leaked photo below. As for whether this leak is actually real, we’ll find out for sure at E3 2018 — which takes place from June 12 to 14.

Broadcast of ELEAGUE’s 2018 Street Fighter V Invitational will feature the use of player eye-tracking technology

According to a very recent report by Variety magazine, the broadcast of ELEAGUE’s upcoming Street Fighter V Invitational will introduce the use of player eye-tracking. Much like the virtual first-down marker or digital “strike-zone” indicators traditionally seen in football and baseball TV programs,  the technology features the use of a  similar visual aid that tracks the players eye movements for the viewers to observe and analyze.

ELEAGUE has used player eye-tracking once before, namely during a 2017 pro tournament for the popular and competitive shooter CS:GO, but this is the first time the technology has been used for a major fighting game tournament, with an audience as large as the series’ collective Twitch and TBS viewers.

While there are certain to be both fans and critics of this new strategic assistance, Robert Occhialini, VP of Turner Sports, assures that the decision was made with the viewers in mind. “As esports continue to grow, technology presents unique opportunities for fans to have a window into the decision-making of these highly-skilled pro players,” says Occhialini.

ELEAGUE’s 2018 Street Fighter V Invitational kicks off today, June 1st, 3:00 PM ET (12:00 PM PT) on Twitch. Fans who tune in can get the first glance at how — or if — this type of visual tech fits into the world of competitive fighting games.
