SNK announces April release window for The King of Fighters ’97 Global Match, releases teaser and new screenshots

At Evo Japan, SNK announced The King of Fighters ’97 Global Match, an online-enabled port of the cult classic The King of Fighters ’97 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC. While they initially stated that the game was coming in “Spring 2018″we now have a slightly more specific release window. SNK has announced that The King of Fighters ’97 Global Match will roll out sometime this April.

While The King of Fighters ’97 isn’t as fondly remembered as The King of Fighters ’98 — or even The King of Fighters 2002 — it still has a cult following among certain players. This new release is a great way for fans to once again play the game — and play it against each other, thanks to online play.

Alongside the announcement they’ve also released a teaser trailer — the same teaser that they showed on stage at Evo Japan — as well as some screenshots. You  can check these all out below.

Team Liquid returns to Smash 4 with the signing of world’s best Bayonetta Saleem “Salem” Akiel Young

Following Nairo’s departure from Team Liquid to join NRG, the esports organization took a bit of a hiatus from the world of Smash 4. Now, they are making their grand return by signing the world’s best Bayonetta and current rank two on the PGR, Saleem “Salem” Akiel Young.

A string of huge victories in 2017 — including Evo, 2GGC: Fire Emblem Saga, DreamHack Atlanta and Smash 4 Boot Camp — helped Salem carve out a position as one of the titans of the Smash 4 world. Now that ZeRo is on a competitive hiatus, expect this Bayonetta main to be gunning for that world number one spot.

Salem will be representing the blue and white at Frostbite 2018 this weekend, hoping to rack up his first gold medal of the year. Should Hungrybox hold his position at the top of the Melee foodchain, Team Liquid could have both the Melee and Smash 4 world number ones by the end of 2018.

For Honor on PC is getting dedicated servers on February 19, consoles to follow soon after

When it launched one of the biggest issues players experienced with For Honor was with its online multiplayer. For a game where multiple players could join in on a match, the game’s default setup of having players host games simply could not suffice. Now, a year since then, the game is finally getting dedicated servers.

Originally announced in their developer roadmap last July, dedicated servers will be coming to the PC version of For Honor on February 19 — with consoles getting them some time afterwards.

These dedicated servers come just in time for the game’s fifth season of content, titled Age of Wolves, which launches on February 14: the game’s first anniversary. Alongside the dedicated servers, Age of Wolves brings with it improvements to five of the games heroes, as well as adjustments to progression and ranked play. This is on top of a three-week seasonal event, as well as new training modes set to launch sometime later in the season.

Sector K Games show off combos and resets for the latest version of Punch Planet

It’s been a while since we’ve checked in on the sci-fi indie fighting game Punch Planet. This three-man footsie-focused future fighter has been a little quiet on the promotional front, as the developers have been hard at work creating the next character for their series. (That would be the acrobatic soilder G-Agent, whose development they have been streaming live for anyone that wants to see the behind-the-scenes footage of game design.)

As this early-access game is still frequently updated on the Steam platform, that hasn’t stopped the developers from showing off their latest changes. If you haven’t seen the game before, this combo video demonstrates the game’s intricate meter-reliant combo system, resets, and cross-ups.

OpTic Gaming dips its toe in the FGC with OpTic Arena, running from June 8th-10th

One of the premier esports teams in the world of first-person shooters, OpTic Gaming have yet to properly set foot in the crucible of fighting games. That’s about to change this June, as the organization is running an event called OpTic Arena as part of A-Kon in Fort Worth, Texas. Running from June 8th-10th, this event will host tournaments for Dragon Ball FighterZ, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, with each game getting a $5000 pot bonus.

Along with the main three events, OpTic Arena will have several exhibition matches, a 24-hour gaming lounge for those who want to play through the night, as well as a bunch of other fun stuff that is yet to be announced. If you are interested in attending, registration is now available over on smash.gg, with a ticket also getting you access to A-Kon in the Fort Worth Convention Center.

Besides this event, OpTiC looks to be scouting out their first FGC player. A recent Tweet from NuckleDu showed the Capcom Cup 2016 champion hanging out at the OpTic Gaming offices — interesting considering Du’s recent split from Team Liquid.

VesperArcade talks about the Evo 2018 lineup in his latest video

Evo 2018 is now officially the biggest topic of discussion with the reveal of the game list for this year’s big tournament. With eight titles on the lineup, people can’t stop talking about what is — and isn’t — in the lineup.

VesperArcade breaks down the game list in his most recent video. During the video, he talks about Arc System Works hints at Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle being considered Blazblue’s successor by supplanting Blazblue: Central Fiction in the roster. But particularly he discusses the two biggest titles in question, Dragon Ball FighterZ and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. He considers the former’s inclusion a possible title to overtake Street Fighter V‘s number of entrants, and also discusses the latter’s both surprising/not surprising exclusion.

Prepare for Turtlemania with the February patch notes for Injustice 2

Following yesterday’s Turtle-tastic livestream which showed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in action, NetherRealm have released the official patch notes for Injustice 2‘s February patch. Besides the obvious big addition, this patch will change up a decent portion of the cast, with Gorilla Grodd, Poison Ivy, and Sub-Zero getting some buffs while Catwoman has been smashed with the nerf bat.

Stampede canceling with Grodd is now much easier, with players being able to cancel out of the run using the Flip Stance button. Poison Ivy’s Bed of Thorns has seen a substantial buff, with it doing increased base damage and hurting those who ever try to jump out of it, while Sub-Zero’s Ice Blast comes out a little faster. The Lin Kuei Grandmaster has also seen a slight improvement to his Ice Blade too.

As for Catwoman, she’s finally been declawed by NetherRealm. Her combos now have increased damage scaling, many of her wallbounce combos now result in hard knockdowns and her Tail Spin has seen a slight range reduction. Expect Catwoman mains licking their wounds once the patch comes out on February 13th.

Expect a new arena layout and increased focus on community games at Evo 2018

Some clues to the ongoing “evolution” of Evo in 2018.

Now that the eight main games have been revealed, we can look forward to learning more details of how Evo 2018 is going to take shape. Event director Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar has offered a few more tidbits via social media, starting with some planned changes to the layout for the Sunday finals at the Mandalay Bay Events Center:

Additionally, it looks like the focus on the games that aren’t on the main stage will be leveled-up for 2018, with plans to provide a dedicated side stage (with a reminder that Evo itself will not be running the side events):

Evo 2018 World Finals will take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, NV, on August 3rd-5th. Registration is expected to open in about a week!

Watch Ryu shoryuken a Barroth in this Monster Hunter: World footage

Announced alongside the Monster Hunter costumes for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, both Sakura and Ryu are taking a trip to the New World to battle some beasts in Monster Hunter: World. Similar to previous crossover costumes, this Street Fighter collaboration allows players to dress up as either Sakura or Ryu via special armor sets.

In a recent episode of Capcom TV, we got a brief glimpse of what it’s like to play Ryu in Monster Hunter: World, complete with his special Hadoken and Shoryuken gestures. To cosplay as Ryu, you must equip the full armor set, meaning you’ll have to forgo your cool High Rank Nergigante armor in order to look like the world warrior. The base stats for the Ryu costume are terrible — with only 65 defence — but his fire, dragon and electric resistances are not too shabby.

Despite being gestures, both the Hadoken and Shoryuken do (very slight) damage. When used against a Low Rank Barroth in the CapcomTV segment, the Hadoken did 11 damage while the Shoryuken did a shameful three damage. Capcom must have used Season 2 Ryu as a basis for this armor. I can’t wait to see someone soloing a Rathalos only using these attacks.

You’ll be able to unlock the Ryu armor via a special event quest later this month, with the Sakura armor coming some time in March.
