Cuphead designers reveal SNK and Street Fighter influences on their title

You’ve probably played Cuphead by now, the old-school Saturday morning cartoon platformer with that tough-as-nails-to-beat reputation. You probably also noticed certain fighting game influences within the game, and spotted some references. The designers of the game were very conscious of implementing certain reference to well known material.

In a GameSpot video, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer talk about how one stage draws on SNK art influences, with a crowd cheering on both combatants. The bosses on that stage, two frogs, are full of Street Fighter II homages. Hadoukens fly around, and you can also spot Honda’s signature move, as well as Dhalsim’s fire. The roll attack comes from Blanka, of course.

And that’s not the exhaustive list, of course. Check out some of the references in the interview video below:

Tournament organizer apologizes and withdraws from the Smash scene after allegedly endangering the lives of others

Multiple sources on Twitter have been writing about a bizarre incident last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to several Smash players, a tournament organizer who goes by the handle JK has endangered the lives of some members of the scene.

The incident, described in several Twitlonger posts, occurred in a parking lot after a local event at Game Nest. A group of eight split after deciding on getting food — Tsugi|Technicals, CDK, S2H, SoCalGohan, Brosinex, Kswz, and Turtle, with JK separating. According to Tsugi|Technicals, JK nearly ran some of the members over with his car — had they not dodged in time. Afrokunsenpai says he didn’t witness the exact moment of the incident, but corroborates the later exchange at a restaurant with JK, where a confrontation took place. According to them, JK expressed no remorse for endangering the lives of those he nearly hit with his car.

Ultimately, there are no charges pressed, and there is no police report filed about the incident — not because there’s doubt that an incident occurred, but because there’s supposedly not enough evidence to prove that it was an attempt to harm the players.

JK still played in a tournament following the incident, but he is getting banned from attending further ones, according to multiple sources. JK posted an apology Twitlonger, citing his own mental health issues. He also posted on his Twitter that he is withdrawing from the Smash scene.

Check out the new Holiday and Nostalgia premium costumes in action in these Street Fighter V online matches

The closest Street Fighter V can get to try-before-you-buy.

RektScrub has compiled this collection of online matches featuring the new threads in action, so you can see what they look like in battle before spending that hard-earned real money.

(Chun-Li’s Alpha-era Nostalgia costume didn’t make the cut for this compilation — though she’s already included for her other two Akiman outfits.)

This week’s Wake Up Wednesdays provides new match, stream, and bracket details for Capcom Cup 2017

Michael Martin offers a quick breakdown of what’s new on the agenda for Capcom Cup.

Another week brings another Wake Up Wednesdays recap show from Capcom Fighters, featuring Michael Martin. In this week’s installment, Martin goes over new details for Capcom Cup 2017, confirming best-of-five matches throughout, and noting that the action will be broadcast on two streams this year.

He then goes into the recent shake-up caused by the withdrawal of last year’s Champion Liquid|NuckleDu from his auto-qualification spot; the Succession rule passes the auto-qualification to 2016’s runner-up EG|Ricki Ortiz. However, even though Ortiz is replacing NuckleDu in the tournament, she will actually be placed in the 31st seed position due to her CPT points being less than the other qualifiers. Meanwhile, the winner of the Last Chance Qualifier will take the 32nd slot. Watch the full video — and see the planned brackets — below!

Tekken 7’s version 1.09 update also adds rematches to online player matches

A new update for Tekken 7 has just gone live. While the big thing that the update brings is DLC guest character Geese Howard from SNK’s Fatal Fury and King of Fighters franchises, it also adds one much requested feature to online matches  — rematches.

With the update to version 1.09, Tekken 7 players can now make use of a rematch option in player matches. The only limitation of this is that it only works in player rooms that have been limited to two players.

Aside from this, the patch also adds new movies in the gallery. The game will now also keep track of individual character rankings based on win count in its leaderboards.

You can check out the full change list below.

Tekken 7 ver. 1.09 patch notes
  • Added Support for DLC [DLC2: Geese Howard Pack].
  • Added movies to the gallery.
  • Added a rematch feature to player matches. This feature is available for sessions with “Max Number of Participants” set to 2.
  • Added individual character rankings based on win count to the leaderboards.
  • Improved optimization of matchmaking conditions.
  • Fixed various bugs.

Tekken 7‘s version 1.09 update is currently live on PlayStation 4 and Steam. Xbox One is expected to follow before Geese’s listed launch time.

Hypespotting 7 has been postponed for Spring 2018

We all need a break sometimes. After running Hypespotting events back to back for six years, the Versus Scotland team have decided that 2018 is the time to recover and rethink the future of one of Europe’s best majors and regular spot on the Capcom Pro Tour. So, until further notice, Hypespotting 7 has been put on hiatus for 2018.

This is by no means the end of Hypespotting — Versus Scotland are going to use the year off to go back to their roots and nurture the Scottish FGC with regular locals, weeklies and casual events. To go along with the theme of regeneration, Versus Scotland have relaunched their website, making it the place to go if you want up-to-date information about local events.

Expect more news about Hypespotting 7 later on in 2018, and we at Shoryuken wish the team all the best during their break.
