Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite arcade mode details surface: Mini-boss, unlockables colors, and more

When Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite launches later this month, it will do so with more modes than its Capcom stablemate Street Fighter V did so last year. One of these modes is the traditional arcade mode, something that the latter has yet to receive to this day. Now, a recent preview has given us some insight into what MvC:I’s arcade mode will entail.

Brazilian site Collectible 506 recently got a chance to try the some of the game’s single-player mods out thanks to Capcom-Unity Brasil. Based on the preview, arcade mode in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will consist of 8 fights, 6 of which will be against team of two other characters. One surprising thing, however, is that there will be a mini-boss before fighting the final boss. While they don’t mention who this character is, they state that anyone following the game’s development should know who this is.

In addition to this, they also detail the rewards for completing arcade mode.  After beating the mode, additional colors will be unlocked for the characters that the player used. While no details on how many colors would be unlocked, or if this would be the only way to unlock colors, it’s nice to see a way to do so that doesn’t seem to be as tedious as Street Fighter V‘s Survival mode.

Other details covered by the preview include previously know details — such as the graphical upgrades done to characters like Chun-Li, and the contents of story mode.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite launches on PlayStation 4, XBox One, and PC on September 19.

Learn your Super Smash Bros. for Wii U match-ups with this huge MU chart, courtesy of inktivate

Learning match-ups is pretty important to improving as a player. In Smash 4 — where the roster contains 58 different characters — you’ve got a lot of data to memorize. Hoping to create a “comprehensive” match-up chart, based off opinions gathered from over 250+ top players, Reddit user inktivate has put together the definitive Smash 4 match-up chart.

Listing over 3025 different match-ups (the list excludes the Mii Fighters), this chart gives players a decent idea of the best and worst characters in Smash 4 — at least on paper. According to the opinions gathered by inktivate, Sheik is currently the best character with 47 winning matches, eight even matches and not a single bad match-up. On the other end of the spectrum, Jigglypuff is the out and out worst character, with only two even match-ups and 53 losing ones. If you compare these ratings to the current Smash 4 Backroom Tier List, this places Sheik four points higher, while Jigglypuff is still dead last.

This list isn’t perfect of course, as there are less match-up charts for lower tier characters and also greater room for disagreement. Little Mac has the most variance when it comes to his match-up spread, while there seems to be a general consensus when it comes to Sheik’s match-ups.

Data is likely to change, and inktivate encourages decorated mains of specific characters to come forward to help flesh out the chart. Hopefully, this chart will be an evolving document as the Smash 4 meta evolves. For all the stats, methodology and other information on this gargantuan match-up chart, check out the Reddit thread.

Team Mew2King defend the throne at Red Bull Gods and Gatekeepers

Last weekend saw the Melee pantheon descend from its position atop Mount Sakurai for Red Bull’s first major Smash event, Red Bull Gods and Gatekeepers. Rather than having the gods and gatekeepers fighting in a straight tournament, they had the players selecting three team members from a pool of “Chosen Ones,” decided by a separate open bracket. The top 16 from this open bracket would make up this crew draft, while the remaining 16 battled it out in a “Forsaken” double-elimination bracket. (If I were to give Red Bull one main place to improve, it would be using a less arcane ruleset for the next edition of Gods and Gatekeepers.)

With the Chosen Ones decided, it was up to the Gods and Gatekeepers to pick their teams. The final rosters were as follows:

  • Team Leffen – Ice, Lucky, and Bladewise
  • Team Mango – S2J, Eddy Mexico, and n0ne
  • Team Mew2King – Duck, Shroomed, and Zhu
  • Team Axe – aMSa, Medz, and Tai
  • Team SFAT – PewPewU, Ryan Ford, and Army
  • Team ChuDat – Westballz, Mike Haze, and Fiction
  • Team Wizzrobe – Druggedfox, MacD, and HugS
  • Team Plup – Swedish Delight, Crush, and Santiago

The format for the crew battle bracket was not typical either. Rather than sharing a pool of stocks and battling over an ever-changing stage list, the first four matches would take place on a specific stage — with the team captains having to pick their best player for that stage. If a team did not win in those first four matches, game five would be a doubles match between each team captain and a player of their choice. It’s a strategic twist on the crew battle format, and one that awarded stage and counterpick knowledge, rather than brute forcing a win by sending your best player in first to gain an early lead.

With the teams locked in, it was time for these Gods and demi-gods to clash. Team Plup and Team Mango were the first to fall, with Team Mango being dispatched by the Godslayer Leffen and his compatriots. Mango did at least contribute one of the most exciting matches of Gods and Gatekeepers, as he fought against world’s best Yoshi aMSa.

Team Mew2King had to claw their way through the lower bracket to reach Grand Finals, after narrowly losing 3-2 to Team Wizzrobe in round 1. Their spirits did not falter though, with the King of the Mews leading his team to victory against Plup, ChuDat, Axe and Wizzrobe, allowing them to avenge their previous loss. With momentum on their side, Mew2King and his team mounted a clean 6-0 victory over Team SFAT, allowing Mew2King to retake the throne at the top of the Melee pantheon — at least until Armada comes back to the USA.

Despite the confusing format, the reception to Gods and Gatekeepers has been extremely positive, with players and viewers praising the production and organization that went into this event. While the Gods had their place, it was a tournament that gave other players a chance to shine on the big stage, and I hope other events follow suit with draft-style side tournaments.

RESULTS:

1. Team Mew2King (Duck, Shroomed, and Zhu)
2. Team SFAT (PewPewU, Ryan Ford, and Army)
3. Team ChuDat (Westballz, Mike Haze, and Fiction)
4. Team Wizzrobe (Druggedfox, MacD, and HugS)
5. Team Leffen (Ice, Lucky, and Bladewise)
5. Team Axe (aMSa, Medz, and Tai)
7. Team Plup (Swedish Delight, Crush and Santiago)
7. Team Mango (S2J, Eddy Mexico, and n0ne)

Bandai Namco quickly rolls out Tekken 7 patch 1.06 to fix resolution change from Customization mode

Bandai Namco has revealed and made patch version 1.06 of Tekken 7 available today across all gaming platforms. The surprise patch, according to Namco’s official website, is specifically designed to fix issues with an unintended resolution change caused by Customization mode, and various problems with the Steam version’s leaderboards.

The patch may have other fixes not documented on the official website, however. reddit users at r/Tekken are reporting that the wait time from rematch declines have been reverted back to pre-1.05 wait times, for example.

Prepare for time compression as Ultimecia joins the cast of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Square Enix and Team NINJA have finally revealed the next character to join the cast of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. The time compression-obsessed sorceress Ultimecia from Final Fantasy VIII now enters the fray with a new trailer.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Ultimecia has been playable in Dissidia game — she was one of the villains fighting on the side of Chaos in the original Dissidia Final Fantasy on the PlayStation Portable, as well as its sequel, Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy. That said, she’s never looked as good as she does here, as the modern hardware makes her already devastating spells and attacks look even more impressive.

Ultimecia will be playable in the game’s arcade version, simply called Dissidia Final Fantasy, in its upcoming September update. Meanwhile, console players will have to wait until January 30, 2018 to play her — and Dissidia Final Fantasy NT in general — on PlayStation 4.

Brook announces the Mars wired controller for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Switch, and PC

Brook has made a name for itself with its line of converters, as well as controller boards for arcade sticks. Their products allow controllers to work on multiple consoles, as well as add functionalities that most off the shelf controllers don’t have. What they haven’t done is release their own controller — until now that is.

Brook has just announced the Mars wired controller. The controller is one that they’re touting as “the best gaming controller” and, as with majority of their products, works on multiple consoles. Specifically, the Mars will work on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Switch, and PC. The controller supports full motion control on PS4, PS3, and Switch. In addition to this, PS4 user will be able to connect a headset for audio and voice chat.

One of the Mars’ unique features is a swappable directional pad. The controller comes with three types of d-pad, a regular cross shaped one, a 4 button d-pad, and a faceted d-pad similar to the one seen on Microsoft’s Elite controller for the Xbox One. The only drawback — at least for PlayStation 4 players — is the lack of a proper touchpad, instead a button can be pressed to give touchpad functionality to the right analog stick. This design quirk is likely due to the Mars not being an officially licensed controller.

No date as of yet has been given by Brook for the Mars’ release. In the meantime, check out all its features in the trailer below.

Indie fighting game titan Skullgirls achieves one million copies sold on Steam

If you build it, they will play. That was the dream of Lab Zero Games when they started out designing Skullgirls in around 2008. It’s no longer a dream, as the game still enjoys a competitive scene and sold very well for a independent title.

As game designer Mike “Mike_Z” Zaimont took to Twitter to announce that the game has hit 1,000,000 copies sold on Steam as of September 3, 2017.

This does not factor in sales on home consoles, so this number is even higher when you count total sales of Skullgirls. This is an inspiration to all indie developers aspiring to put together a quality fighting game. If you build it, they will play. Congratulations goes out to the team at Lab Zero for everything they’ve done.

Fight of Gods is now available on Steam, complete with Jesus and Buddha

When first announced, Fight of Gods looked to be your standard heavenly brawler with the usual assortment of deities from the Norse, Chinese and Greek pantheons. Then developer Digital Crafter announced that the prophet Moses was playable, with the Ten Commandments at his weapon. Now, as Fight of Gods launches on Steam Early Access, Digital Crafter has revealed that Jesus and Buddha are also joining the roster.

While Buddha is an out there choice, this is the first time I have ever seen the Son of God in a fighting game. He joins as the roster after literally tearing himself down from the True Cross and using the arms as make-shift knuckle dusters. It brings a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘cross-up’.

I’m a bit rusty on my Bible knowledge, but I don’t remember the part of the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus beats all the money lenders in a first-to-ten. You may find his frame data hidden in the Book of Numbers though. If you want to give Fight of Gods a try, it’s currently available on Steam Early Access for $4.79.

r/StreetFighter releases data from their community feedback polls

While Capcom has made headway into correcting a lot of the issues the community has had with the game in the last year, there are still some pressing issues that are present within Street Fighter V today. After previously doing a community poll last year, /r/StreetFighter has done so again, and has just released the results from the new poll.

While the usual suspects are high on the list, such as fixing the netcode and one-sided rollback, the community is also asking for more defensive options and new ways to use the V-Meter.

An accompanying video has discussed the data in further detail.
