Sign ups for the Dragon Ball FighterZ closed beta open on July 26th

Announced at the end of Tekken finals, Dragon Ball FighterZ producer Tomoko Hiroki revealed a new DBFZ trailer showing off Future Trunks, as well as when signups will open for the game’s closed beta.

Sign ups will open on July 26th, with the beta being available for PS4 and Xbox One. The big news is that there will be nine playable fighters in the beta, rather than just the six we’ve seen in the E3 build. We already know that one of these new fighters is Future Trunks, with the remaining two to be revealed in the magazine V-Jump on July 21st. Personally, I’m betting on Piccolo and Krillin.

Remember to set your alarms for July 26th, as I imagine beta spots will disappear faster than you can say “Demon Containment Wave”.

Skullomania and Darun Mister revealed for Arika EX, with PS4 beta planned for end of 2017

Arika, the minds behind Street Fighter EX and Fighting Layer, just revealed two new characters for their latest project “Arika EX”. And who were those characters?

Skullomania

Darun Mister

That’s right, Street Fighter EX favorites Skullomania and Darun Mister are joining the Arika EX roster! I could write something about how long the FGC has been waiting for these characters to appear, but why not just let them tell you?

Arika continues to deliver hype surprises in their signature style. They also revealed that not only is the game in full development for the PlayStation 4 with a worldwide release planned for sometime in 2018, but that a beta is planned for later this year! Expect more details from Arika later this year, with pre-orders for Arika EX going live at the same time as the beta. I wonder if it will release on April 1st, 2018…

Darkstalkers’ Jedah officially revealed for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

At the conclusion of Evo 2017’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament, Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez and Peter “Combofiend” Rosas sat down for an exhibition of the latest build of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. The best of three set originally seemed like it was there to show off the previously teased Guardians of the Galaxy character, Gamora. After the set tied 1-1, however, Combofiend went back to the (unseen up until this point) character select screen.

And that’s when he picked Jedah.

While there’s no official trailer yet for the character, Combofiend demonstrated that Jedah’s toolset translates well into the MvC:I universe.

This reveal stays in line with the previously leaked roster on NeoGAF from a few months’ back.

How does the new Darkstalker look to you?

NerdJosh shares system mechanics for Arika’s Fighting Layer EX

Over at EVO, lucky players are getting the chance to play what, not too long ago, was just a dream: Arika’s new fighting game Fighting Layer EX.

FGC icon NerdJosh was kind enough to grab some system mechanics of the latest Arika fighter, for those of us not in attendance.

The biggest surprise is the Gougi system. Somewhat similar to Street Fighter x Tekken’s Gem System, you chose a “deck” (a set of 5 Gougi Icons with different attributes) and fulfill various actions to get bonuses during gameplay. Unlike SFxT, however, you are locked to a particular set, and each set seems geared towards fairly specific goals.

What do you think of Arika’s mechanics on paper?

En garde! Nidhogg 2 comes to PS4 and PC on August 15th

Following its announcement back in September 2016, developer Messhof have announced that Nidhogg 2 will be coming to PS4 and PC on August 15th. This sequel builds upon the original by adding course hazards, projectile weapons and more movement options for fencers to use in battle. As well as additional mechanics, Nidhogg 2 drops the minimalist look of its predecessor and opts for a more expressive, cartoony art-style.

The reason for this art-style change is mainly due to improvements in Messhof’s animation system, which now allows the developer to animate separate body parts rather than whole character sprites. Due to this change, it’s much easier for the team to “combine things like fencing footwork, various upper-body stances, and weapon types.” With this greater freedom, Messhof was to experiment with styles and come to the goofy, Simpsons-esque aesthetic that you see now.

It takes some getting used to, but you can now customize your own character and fight in more absurd locales, thanks to Nidhogg’s new look. Pre-orders for Nidhogg 2 open on July 18th and who knows, it may win the Player’s Choice spot for next year’s Evo.
