New in-game screenshot of Future Trunks in Dragon Ball FighterZ revealed by Dragon Ball Game Twitter

Last week, we reported that Future Trunks would be joining the playable cast of Dragon Ball FighterZ, according to Weekly Jump. In the accompanying screenshot, he was performing his signature Heat Dome attack. The official Dragon Ball Game Twitter account has released another screenshot of the time-traveling Saiyan, as he has just stricken Frieza with what appears to be his Lighting Sword Slash, which he used to destroy Android 14 in the film Super Android 13!  You can see the Tweet that includes the screenshot below.

This also confirms he’ll be utilizing his signature sword in battle, undoubtedly giving him extremely long reach on his normals and specials, compared to the rest of the current cast members. Though no other details were given, we’ll hopefully be seeing a gameplay trailer for this fighter soon. Other characters confirmed for the title include Goku, Teen Gohan, Vegeta, Frieza, Perfect Cell, and Majin Buu. With Trunks clearly donning his Capsule Corp jacket from DBZ, it will be interesting to see if Kid Trunks or his new transformation from Dragon Ball Super will make an appearance in this title.

What are your thoughts on the addition of Future Trunks to the DBFZ roster? Let us know your thoughts on his potential play style in the comments.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is expected to be released in early 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with a closed beta being released before the end of the summer.

Street Fighter V servers down for maintenance & new school uniform outfits arriving as DLC today

Hall monitor Nash says you can’t pass (until after 5:00 PM).

SFV Street Fighter V logo white

It’s becoming a fairly usual Tuesday ritual for the Street Fighter V servers to close up for maintenance for a while, and they will do exactly that again today — from between 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM PDT.

At least this time, there’s some new content coming along with it; today we’ll be getting the premium school uniform outfits for R. Mika, Nash, and Ibuki. They should be available for purchase once the servers are back up.

SFV R Mika School Costume
SFV Nash School Costume
SFV Ibuki School Costume

Hopefully we get more of these in the future for some characters that are lacking in the extra outfit department. I want to see Dhalsim as the eccentric history teacher, P.E. wrestling coach Zangief, Akuma as the scruffy janitor, and M. Bison as the overbearing school principal.

Unleash your Super Saiyan power: The known anime and manga references for Gohan & Vegeta in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Last week, we brought you a look at all of the known anime and manga references for Goku and Frieza in the upcoming collaborative fighter between Bandai Namco Entertainment and Arc System Works, Dragon Ball FighterZ. Now IKevinX is back to give us a look at the other two Saiyans we’ve seen in gameplay so far: Gohan and Vegeta.

Clad in battle gear similar to Piccolo’s and in his Super Saiyan 2 form, most of Gohan’s attacks and animations obviously come from his battle against Perfect Cell at the climax of the Cell Games, with his Dragon Rush being a particularly impressive panel-by-panel recreation from the manga. Though certain moves are also lifted from some of his younger days, notably his battles against the likes of Frieza’s 2nd Form and Dodoria on Planet Namek. We also get a great at his Level 5 Super, courtesy of Maximilian: the one-handed Father-Son Kamehameha that was used to utterly obliterate the entirety of Perfect Cell, with Gohan even having a recovery animation mirroring his complete exhaustion after the attack.

As for the Prince of all Saiyans, the self-proclaimed “Super Vegeta’s” attacks draw chiefly from the Android and Cell Sagas, but have references peppered in from throughout his entire tenure with the series, especially when it comes to the staggering amount of kicks he uses, which even the video creator noted was a bit of a chore to fully source… unlike his signature barrage of ki blasts. Lastly, his expressions during his Final Flash Super have been beautifully recreated, complete with the attack’s planet destroying capabilities! You can see both videos below.

IKevinX has mentioned doing videos like these for the entire roster as characters are released, so Perfect Cell and Majin Buu will likely be coming soon. For more on DBFZ, you can check out IGN’s “7 Things You Need To Know,” which has good coverage of the title’s core mechanics, and can even pre-order the game from Bandai Namco Entertainment’s online store.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is set to be released in early 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with a closed beta coming sometime before the end of summer.

Duct Tape Productions will explore the past and future of Project M in Rewrite, coming in 2018

While it may have vanished from major Twitch streams, Project M is very much alive and kicking. With an active Championship Circuit and players continuing to push the game to its limit, this storied fan mod of Brawl shows no signs of fading into obscurity.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of other landmark documentaries about the Smash community, Duct Tape Productions is planning to explore “the sordid history” of Project M in Rewrite, a film coming in 2018. From its humble beginnings to its rise in popularity, subsequent fall from grace, and now its rebirth, this documentary hopes to literally rewrite the Project M history book and tell the truth from the players and people who were there.

If Duct Tape Productions are able to meet some specific stretch goals on their GoFundMe, they plan to release some smaller films about Supernova — the tournament that sparked Project M’s renaissance — and the Wolf player Switch who is widely considered the Mango of Project M. There is also the possibility of a special Rewrite build of PM, complete with custom music and artwork.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s hidden tricks and secrets, as uncovered by a PC modder

As much as we try to break down and understand the inner workings of a fighting game, oftentimes, its most closely-guarded secrets will never be known — until someone actually looks into the game’s code. Such is the case with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, a game whose innermost secrets are only being revealed now that modders are digging into the PC version of the game.

650fosho, who has been working on the UMvC3EX mod for the game, recently posted to reddit detailing certain things he’s discovered. Some of these are simple bits of data that haven’t been covered in previous guides, such as the official one from BradyGames (often called the UMvC3 “Bible”). These include all the restrictions on Iron Man’s dashes that make it awkward (his forward ground dash has no momentum until frame 5, and has a restriction that prevents plink dashing until frame 10).

Other bits of data include how some inconsistencies with the classification of certain attacks, as well how different moves with charge times work in the game. On the latter, while charges need to be held for a certain number of frames, they’re also only registered after a number of frames have past. For example, Thor technically only needs 10 frames to charge Mighty Strike, however the charge only registers after 14 frames, making it a 24 frame charge. Speaking of Thor, his air dash has a height restriction based on his hurtbox. It’s the size of his hurtbox combined with this height restriction that keeps him from moving like other characters with 8-way air dashes like Magneto.

One more interesting thing that’s been discovered is how different characters have different knockdown times off their air S in an air combo. This is why it’s impossible to hard tag into an OTG with some characters, while some characters have it easier. The former usually have their knockdown times nerfed compared to the latter, who usually have it at the default setting.

Of course, these are just some of the things that have been discovered. Head on over to the r/MvC3 subreddit for more!

Marvel Games’s Jay Ong on their changed approach to games, and how that affects Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

While we’ve heard a lot about Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite from Capcom, we haven’t really heard as much yet from the Marvel regarding the upcoming fighter. At E3 2017 however, Gamesindustry.biz’s Brendan Sinclair got a chance to talk to Marvel Game’s Jay Ong regarding Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and the rest of their portfolio.

The main thing that Ong discussed was how they’ve changed the way they license games, and work with their licensees. The gist of it is that they want their relationships to be for the long term. Ong specifically mentions the three big games they have on the horizon: Insomniac’s Spider-Man, Square-Enix’s untitled Avengers game, and of course Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. As part of this, Ong also stated that they’re no longer handling licenses like they used to — where they’d give a company exclusive rights to one character or IP. This also means that they’re looking more into pushing games that feature the entire Marvel Universe.

One other thing Ong mentions is that Marvel wants to take advantage of the industry-wide shift into the games-as-a-service model. Specifically, Ong states that they believe that Marvel is in a position to take advantage of this thanks to the depth of their IP. He compares it as akin to “feeding the hungry beast.”

This, of course, applies to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, which is one such project that looks to be primed for this — because both companies share a similar depth of IP. “And what we talked about earlier with games-as-a-service, we certainly expect Marvel vs. Capcom to be that,” states Ong. “There’s going to be content released over time. We’re not seeing this as a one-off that ships this fall; it’s a service that goes on for years. Therefore, if you look at it, content and new characters are going to be dropped over time, and I think fans will be happy with what’s going to be dropped, not just in September but going on from there.”

When asked about the possible exclusions of certain fan-favorites, specifically those associated with the X-Men and Fantastic Four, Ong brought up the fact that the roster still hasn’t fully been revealed. “We haven’t officially released the roster,” Ong states, “let’s just say we think our fans will be pleased with what’s being announced.”
